Black Americans are more likely to be killed by police. The police are rarely held accountable.
Become a Video Lab member! bit.ly/video-lab
On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis police officers killed an unarmed black man named George Floyd. After video of Floyd’s death spread on the internet, protesters filled the streets across the US, demanding an end to police brutality and a reckoning with the unequal treatment of Black Americans, but also with another, more direct demand: That his killers be punished.
Until recent years, there was no reliable data on how many people in the US were killed by police every year, or on the legal outcomes of those killings. But data collected by the Mapping Police Violence project provides some answers, including one that has held steady every year for which we have data: Police are almost never charged with killing someone, and are even less often convicted.
The data shows that less than 3% of police killings lead to the officer being charged with a crime, and fewer than 1% of them result in a conviction, and that these rates are the same regardless of the victim’s race. But it also shows that a Black American is three times more likely to be killed by police than a white American.
Here’s Mapping Police Violence’s data, which we rely on throughout the video:
mappingpoliceviolence.org/
The Washington Post also keeps a record of deaths caused by police shootings, which had similar findings:
www.washingtonpost.com/graphi...
An interview with a historian on the history on police brutality:
www.vox.com/2020/6/6/21280643...
Vox also interviewed experts on ways to reform American policing:
www.vox.com/2020/6/1/21277013...
The headline for this video has been updated, it was changed from: A timeline of 1,944 Black Americans killed by police.

philando castile announced to the officer that he had a gun. he then immediately reached for something in his car which is when he was killed by the officer traffic stops can be deadly for police officers, there's countless videos of officers being shot and killed even as they walk towards a vehicle with that in mind do you really think philando castile was killed 'for no reason' when all the officer had to go off when making a split second decision was him saying he had a firearm and that he then reached for something if the officer had killed castile without any reason to be fearful for his life or others then he would have been sentenced accordingly you can go on about how you believe the justice system is racist and the 12 individuals who decided whether or not he was guilty are racist but it only goes to show who is the true racist here..

Remember when one horror event or near death experience in your life can change you for life? Now imagine one horror event or near death experience from a cop arresting civilians. Now, why would a cop experience a near death experience from arresting civilians? Not everyone is a civil civilians because of inequality due to capitalism (also, not everyone is a civilian as a terrorist could be among the civilian). Not even knowledge can perfectly give everyone their perfect dream life. Then, imagine the horror event that shouldn't be a horror event reenacting the horror event very closely. It would take a lot of courage to let it play to the end.

The shooting of Tamir Rice being seen as “A tragedy, but not a crime.” That is the most telling of all of these, I’d say. Because there’s this mentality that use of force should only be used when an officer feels in danger. But that ignores what happens when you have police trained specifically to feel they are ALWAYS in danger, especially when dealing with someone black. It wasn’t a crime, because the kid had what looked like a gun, the police felt they were in danger, and the only response they have is draw and shoot.

It doesn’t matter if they were unarmed or not. The police always claim to ‘fear for their life’, regardless of the situation. That’s what was said about Sandra Bland, the man with the toy gun, the kid with the toy gun, Castille, etc. Almost every person killed by the police, same excuse, so the reasoning behind the killings is moot.

Okay, I appreciate and support the message of the video but there is an inaccuracy here. The situation in every one of those killings is unique. Not every killing was racially motivated. If an officer is shot at he has no other choice but to shoot back. Some of these people were criminals (and this trascends all races).
@wownewstome6123
@wownewstome6123 3 жыл бұрын
Case by case is what matters. For instance, Michael Brown had just held up a store, and he reached into the officer's window which would make any officer feel he was reaching for their gun. He had also been walking down the middle of the street. Unusual behavior like that can indicate a person is on a drug, so possibly dangerous.
@ProfessorEGadd
@ProfessorEGadd 3 жыл бұрын
Instead of asking 'was the shooting racial motivated?', ask 'how much of a role did racism play in this shooting?'. Sometimes it'll be 5 or 10%, other times it will be 60 or 80%. Don't simplify everything to being either 0 ot 100%. Also: Being a criminal has nothing to do with it. In civilised countries accused criminals stand trial. If the police are killing people they think might be a criminal then you live in a warzone.
