This is where a lot of character writing started to falter for me. Carol’s arc here was absurd and looked to me like a frantic struggle to rewrite her before Negan, since bad mamajama Carol would have messed Negan up and messed with the arc. Later Carl, Rick, and Michonne would all get weird writing for me.

Personally, I found Rick and Michonne's relationship in the show jarring not because they haven't been built up as extremely close, they definitely had, but because Jessie died literally the episode before they got together. I we had an episode that covered a show-abridged version of "We Find Ourselves" I think I would have been way more initially understanding.
@bradcarver81272 жыл бұрын
Nah Rick needed a woman that is his equal. Jessie was never meant to be. It was initially a little jarring. Upon reflection though, It makes sense. Jessie was fooling herself trying to be “tough”. Her little speech “If we don’t fight, we die” was more her trying to convince herself. She couldn’t hack it in the real world.

I felt similarly. It just felt bizarre and made Rick look like a dick. Even with the time skip I think they could’ve pushed the relationship back till episode 14.

Ultimately, I love Michonne and Rick together but the amount of whiplash I got between the season break where he just lost his sort of girlfriend to then him all of sudden being happy go lucky with Michonne uhh..... it was a little sudden! I just wish we could have seen more development of them realizing their feelings for each other and then having to work through that and confessing to each other during an apocalypse, it would have been some cute character development that I think would have worked better than having us be confused and trying to piece everything together like Carl for comedic affect.

Hilltop being this tiny ass community of 20 people vs the huge community it was in the comic was really disappointing. In fact I’d say Hilltop in the show visually is the worst of them all. The prison, Alexandria, the Sanctuary, and the Kingdom feel appropriate to their population. Hilltop is the odd man out.

There are a lot of great moments, both exclusive to the show and shared from the comics, but it's still a difficult Season for me to get through. At least the comics stay pretty decent during it all, but..that's about it.

I think that Morgan’s story and character was very good at this point, but just became a mess after he killed the savior to save Carol (which, to be fair, he could have snuck up behind him and knocked him out instead of shooting him, which makes no sense as to why he didn’t do that due to his pacifist nature at the time). I think the story to this day still needs a character who refuses to kill to act as a foil to the rest of the group (imagine the stuff with The Reapers with a character like that involved), and Morgan should have just stayed a pacifist. His character switches directions way too much, and is very inconsistent. Also, I din’t think Carol has been a good character since season 4, aside from in season 10. She just came off as annoying to me when she ran away, similar to how annoying Sam became near the end of his story.
@pinkcatacombs2 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest issue is the fact that they made Morgan go to fear so he existed in two different stories at once. I remember watching fear and being like well they won’t kill him here bc if he dies it’ll be in the main show. But then he became like the main character of fear and I was like well now he can’t die in the main show either. And I think his character became this mess of extreme plot armor and conflicting personalities. I loved the losing his mind and the CLEAR arc and I think the pacifist thing is a good way to explain how he keeps his mental health in check in this apocalypse since he can’t just see a psychologist for PTSD or whatever. But the switching between pacifist and not a pacifist was the mistake bc then it made no sense. If he killed someone bc he lost it again and was in his CLEAR psychotic break that would make sense. But it doesn’t make sense especially in fear he ends up like killing ppl with no problem mentally. Like idk you can’t have the CLEAR episode and then be like yeah he’s just cured forever now without any psychiatric intervention lol Morgan has INSANE plot armor and his mental state was his weakness and then they just… wrote it out. I remember “watching” fear but it was hard to follow and pay attention to. Last thing I remember is Morgan following this big guy and killing him with a huge ax ??? Or something and he like has a cowboy hat or some like very cartoony outfit. And he’s like a force to be reckoned with like he’s a big tough guy…. When in the past here All life is precious it’s just not realistic at all for these stories to be the same guy. Idk if the writers are different for fear or not but it doesn’t matter they should have kept the character consistent across shows. It literally feels like a different character between shows. And I think since his story went so off the rails they don’t know how to end it in a way so he just keeps existing.

Richonne felt so natural to me that ever since the very early episodes of Season 4 I already called that if the show ever did get to Alexandria and included Jessie, we would get Richonne to date as soon as Jessie died. And well, a few years after, one episode after Jessie died on No Way Out... It began.
@laceyisnotreading2 жыл бұрын
I also love Rick’s and Michonne’s relationship. To be fair I binged the show on Netflix so maybe that made it feel different for me than someone who waited a week between episodes, but I think it was hinted steadily gradually through their friendship and the way they mirror each other feels super natural. They ground each other in a way other characters don’t. I’ve seen some people say it makes Rick look bad because of Jessie but personally I never connected with his and Jessie’s relationship. One, I don’t love the narrative of her having to set herself up for a new relationship to get out of her abusive one, but it also felt so much more out of left field. It also felt like he was looking for a place to deposit his humanity or sensitivity with Jessie, which isn’t a bad thing, but makes her out to be more of a plot device than an actual well-rounded character, which isn’t fair to her either. So to me they weren’t developed enough to make it that infeasible that he actually have feelings for someone who he had a long term and steady friendship with after her death. Michonne is as developed and complex as Rick is and I think they compliment each other in a way that kept me invested in their dynamic even when the rest of the show itself lagged.

I completely understand what you mean in terms of the scale of Hiltop being so different and how that effects the story, however to me the smaller community that they have in the show just makes the Saviors seem like a completely unmanageable threat with no sense of hope. Where as in the comic it already felt like if just Hiltop and Alexandria came together to fight the Sanctuary they would have had enough manpower which is why I do prefer the show a bit more in that aspect. It really did feel like they desperately needed the other communities help (The Kingdom and Oceanside, I think the inclusion of the dumpster people was dumb). Especially after they take out the Satellite Outpost and it seemed that they'd dealt with the Saviors for good just to be shown that, no, no you're not, not even f***ing close. So in conclusion I feel that the sense of scale made more sense for the show considering the difference of how they went about introducing the Saviors and it made more sense when they were trying to recruit alliances to help them fight back. They only used around the same amount of characters from the comics anyway but just made it make more sense, less room = less survivors = more tense battles with more stakes. I'm still really not a fan of season 8 but for how the war started in the show it made more sense to me.

It just took a while especially since as some said it was for us right after Jessie was killed even though time went by for them it took a while for us as an audience to catch up from the sudden emotional whiplash. I wouldn't chalk it up to racism just a sudden drop of their feelings for each other after only like an episode or two had passed since Jessie.

I know it's an unpopular opinion but I really didn't click with Negan in the comic book. That's when they jumped the shark for me. Don't get me wrong I stuck around for the pulpy comic book entertainment value but besides his quips it was clear Kirkman was becoming ultra self indulgent and just ignoring real world logic. It all falls apart the second you ask, "Why do so many people follow Negan?" It's because he's so ruthless but he keeps them safe and protects them! Really? When? He kills them on a whim, doesn't give a crap when they die, when someone kills a whole slew of his men he treats that person to a special dinner and a ride home. Any group of hardcore people would have stuck Negan in an incinerator with Lucille jammed up his tailpipe. He certainly wouldn't be leading ANYONE. No, the real reason so many people follow Negan is because the author needed them to in order to make Negan seem more intimidating and fulfill whatever weird apocalyptic harem fantasy the author wanted to vicariously live through lol. He did have some hilarious lines though.

Rewatching this and thinking back on it I can see where the fans think the Rick and Michonne relationship was rushed. Especially since we skipped the hell out on Rick grieving for Jesse in the TV show. This was also, in the west at least, the time where people would see a couple like this and call it "forced interracial for brown points" because it was 2016. But mainly if not for the fact we had that month skip rushing things we would easily have had more acceptance of the two I feel.

I think Carl NOT sneaking into the trip to hilltop is such a mistake. Especially since Carl is way older in the show I think it could’ve actually been portrayed better having him help Rick or something. It is also super weird that Morgan wasn’t included in the hilltop story. They gave his death to tyreese so it seems like they knew Morgan wasn’t going to die anytime soon, so I don’t know why he wouldn’t be an important leadership member. Especially with his all life is precious dale-esque vibe he would want to be involved with how things are running.
