Today at the Mystery Shack, we delve into the Larger World arc and discuss all the changes the TV version has already made to the Negan Saga, as well as begin to hypothesize what exactly made the show have such a different feel when it comes to this portion of the story. We'll be covering the entire "A Larger World" volume consisting of issues 91-96 and briefly touching on the "Something to Fear" story.

The cliff hanger makes even less sense in retrospective considering they could’ve killed Abe in the season 6 finale, making us all think Glenn was safe, then have the season 7 premiere be Glenn’s, it’d be a double whammy that would’ve caught pretty much everyone off guard.

@@talkingonyoutube623 if anything it shows having a 16 episode season isn’t always viable. Season 7 is evident of this. Season 5 I’d argue could’ve been cut by 2 episodes. That’s what I did with my rewrite. Combine only the necessary bits in episodes 9 and 10 and bolt them onto episode 8.

Keeping it the way it was a simple change would’ve kept the same cliffhanger effect. Have us see Abe get batted in Last Day on Earth then have Daryl punch Negan. Negan says they’re gonna regret it and cut to black, with just audio have Negan Eenie meenie again and when he gets to the last ‘Mo’ have the audio switch to heavy breathing and a POV shot with Negan pointing the bat at the second victim, ending the episode there maybe with some beating noises and screaming.

I still remember watching 6x16 when it aired with my dad. We were legit on the edge of our seats and feeling anxious as fuck. Every encounter of the group with the Saviours made those feelings go up the charts. There’s only one flaw with this episode that ultimately killed twd in my opinion, the cliffhanger. I believe they should’ve let one of the kills in the finale (Abraham) and then kill Glenn in 7x01. No one would’ve expected a second major death in a row and would’ve made Negan even more scarier.

while i agree that separating the kills would've been preferable to the overall cliffhanger (and that negans introduction was overall awesome), i feel like making a two part finale (with 6x17 being the actual last episode of the season) could've also worked. imagine having to wait an entire week to find out who negan killed. having the Last Day On Earth and The Day Will Come When You Won't Be back to back would've been crazy. also, I think killing two fan favorite and incredibly magnetic characters in a season premiere is incredibly stupid and is exactly why over 5 million viewers checked out that week. an absolutely unprecedented ratings drop that i've never seen for a tv show before or since. i literally cannot name another show that ever did something so incredibly reckless. not even game of thrones pulled that. i will never forget seeing the ratings from 7x01 to 7x02 and telling my dad that the show was in deep trouble. it was very painful to watch the ratings continue to go down until they finally reached negative season 1 numbers in season 9. really depressing stuff.

Last Day on Earth (the season 6 finale) is easily one of the show’s most underrated episodes in my opinion. I understand being angry back in the day, but letting the cliffhanger taint the whole episode is crazy to me 😅 The way the dread increases across the episode as Rick and his people continue to get more and more closed in had my heart RACING the first time. And that fear factor (something to fear 😉) just builds up more and more until the iconic entrance of Negan, with the group at its most vulnerable state ever. I ADORE the episode so much, and watching it as a double feature with 7x01 is immaculate!

I feel that they spilt have killed Abe off at that finally instead of leaving us all on a cliffhanger. Might be a bad way to end the episode, but having Rick then dragged off into the Winnebago by Negan and lingering on (what would now be) Abe's smashes head would be keep us scared, but not trying to hold our breathe still.

Saving him from his comic death only to kill him in the lineup was such a waste and imo it kind of made Negan look weak for killing the biggest man in the group. Kirkman had said he wished he kept abe around for all out war since he would have really shined there and the show squandered their chance to do just that for the sake of a shock kill that ultimately was overshadowed by Glenn's.

Another thing is his death often got overshadowed by Glenn's, both were tragic deaths but I feel like Abraham sometimes didnt get the credit he deserved he was one of the stronger fighters in the show

Reading the comics now, after being fully caught up with the show, I found the Savior introduction to be very quick. But the show possibly drags it on a little too much. I'm mostly thinking of that episode centered on Carol and Maggie. As for the cliffhanger, my fix would be to kill off Abe and end with Rick being dragged into the Winnebago by Negan before driving off. Add a bit more dialogue from Negan about how he'll be back soon (to expand on what he already says) like to keep everyone in line while he's gone, and leave us on what remains of Abe's head. We will be very scared, but not trying to hold our breaths for six months. I absolutely agree that AMC should have realized that audience can't stand a well, let alone six months, of waiting on such a ending.

I remember there were fake takes where different people were killed. There was a version where Maggie dies going around on KZbin for a short bit, and she spat blood at Negan before he killed her.

The episode with Negan's introduction was honestly the highest point of tension and suspense in the entire show. It was so well done, and it was so perfect. The episode that came after was also a great season opener, but every single episode after was a severe downgrade. And with each appearance of Negan, his presence dwindled further and further and it's so upsetting.

Not only Negan's language, but his appearance also really differentiated that perception. I really wish they had beefed JDM up to make him look more intimidating, like he could actually man handle somebody in a fight. The comics portray him as a juggernaut, while the show portrays him as scrawny and skinny. This is the big bad that supposed to be worse than the Governor, correct?

It’s also important to note that in the book, both of the group’s encounters with the Saviors before meeting Negan involved them being accosted in some way, making the killing more justified, whereas in the show, they pull up on the Satellite outpost having never technically met them before and just massacre them

One thing I love about the final two episodes of Season 6 in particular is the way the sun is slowly setting. Especially when they’re leaving Alexandria And i think the reason why they decided to change up the pacing from the comics is because the show runners knew people would be aware of Negan coming, so they wanted to use that knowledge to create suspense, and boy there was suspense

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is great casting. I just wish AMC let him keep his language and that Jeffrey was a bit Bigger build. Negan in the comics was fairly large and physically threatening. He a little lanky in the show.

My biggest issue with Abe not getting his comic book death is that he is killed off so soon after he was initially suppose to go that we didn't even get a chance to see where his character might go with him still being alive. Making his comic book death swap out in the show forgettable for offing a low profile character and even more severely making abes death look like nothing more than shock value to surprise fans with 2 Lucille kills when it would have made the saviors more menacing to have them kill Abe his comic book way and then only a couple episodes later kill off yet another great member of the group in the line up.

I remember how dark the episode where they attack the sleeping saviors was. It was so hard to watch that and you wanted to scream at the TV telling them not to because it's so incredibly dark and sinister and there'd be no way back from killing basically innocent people while sleeping. They got off lightly with Negan only killing two (and one of those was purely because of Daryl so it would have been one)

@@Superman68541 Lmao no it isn't. Curse words add impact to sentences and the creative ways Negan uses cursing in the comic adds both comedic impact, and dramatic impact to what he says. Sometimes the cursing even makes it dramatic and comedic at the same time which is brilliant writing imo.

They had a way better cliffhanger and didn’t realize it. When Negan drags Rick into the RV and drives off with him, that would have put both the comic readers and show viewers in the same boat because no one would have any idea what would happen next and we would have spent the 6 months debating and theorizing where Negan took Rick instead of who he killed because everyone basically knew it would be Glenn plus I remember the month before S7 released it was leaked on a Facebook fan page. The only real surprise was that it was two people rather than one. That was definitely a dumb decision on their part.

Rick and the group been through HELL with other humans yes, but not all of them are vicious evil people. Negan went VERY EASY on Rick’s group.

Although episode 13 is the more fillary episode, episode 14 was by far worse by the nature the Denise plot was bad. She was really annoying that episode. Like why TF would Daryl ever let Denise go outside?! She’s their only doctor and extremely valuable. Yes, the Hilltop’s doctor was also outside the walls, but with him he was with like a dozen people, not 2. So when she died I was more relieved she could finally shut up than startled. I am not a fan of Abraham dying. Although a cool death, from a comic perspective it’s bizarre. He survives his comic death just to die 2 episodes later. It would be if Shane survived his comic death just to die an episode later

This cliffhanger was so awful to me. I hated it. I had already read up to this point in the comic years before this happened in the show, and I just hated it. The reveal and everything was fantastic and finding the uncut version later was PERFECT. To this day i i still like the censored Negan in the show more. It pronounces his charisma and overall style and demeanor, of course w the help of JDM's portrayal. If you think about it, anyone can just have every other word be a curse but not everyone can have the same presence that negan has. And come on if he were to be cursing left and right in the show to be honest it'd get old pretty quick.

That uncut scene of Negan cussing is goofy though, so overboard with the f-bombs it makes the situation feel less serious and something that can only be pulled off in a comic book, on screen though you can tell Jeffrey is just trying to mimic a page of dialogue rather than do his own thing.

Such a shame the S6 finale was undone but it’s final moments, truly would have been exceptional if it weren’t for those final moments and, ultimately, the decision that I believe, killed the show.

I really like the idea of rick killing so many that from negans view point he's the bad guy but yeah the numbers were so off
