In India, specially in Hindu weddings there is a custom that the groom's shoes will be stolen and hidden by the bride's side until the groom's side finds them. This has been existing since many many years,but this film just glamorized this custom. It's really fun though. If the groom's side don't find the shoes,they have to pay some amount of money demanded by the bride's side and then get the shoes back . In this film, Madhuri's sister and Salman's brother are getting married...so these fun games are being played by them. Also, at the end of the song, Salman could have had the shoes back,but he let Madhuri have them.. because he fell for her..

Actually it is a tradition is to steal hide grooms shoes, its also for fun and for money within the bride's side Madhuri is the bride's sister here and salman the groom's brother. The bride's side stole the groom's shoes and hid it but salman's team goes and steals it back and hides it Now the groom's side asks for money to return the shoes but didn't realise that the shoes are already stolen so the tug of war begins. And for the rest watch the movie❤

there is no complication but pure family fun..... in ancient indian culture when the groom goes to brides house for marriage then all sister in laws tease the groom with many fun games.... hiding the grooms shoes and later releasing for money or other presents is a common game.... younger brothers or cousins of groom play the detective searching for the shoe.... many other music or dance challenges etc fun games between younger people of both families take place throughout the night till all get exhausted... usually ancient tradition of marriages continued from ten to ifteen days.....

Ha ha ha! Judging from the comments here, a lot of people must have been screaming at their screens! To explain, the game of holding the groom's shoes for ransom (jutti chupai/churai = hiding/stealing the shoes) is centuries old, and is common across South Asia, regardless of faith, caste or income, though it originated from Hindu traditions. The shoes are said to represent wealth and status: the groom removes them prior to the religious ceremony, to signify piety and respect before God, and it's usually at this point that they "disappear". After the ceremony, the groom must pay a ransom for his shoes, as a demonstration of his wealth and generosity (since there is strictly no need to buy them back). It's all intended to foster good relations between families - South Asians take very seriously the principle that a marriage is between two families, not just the couple. I notice that you have remarked on the visible wealth of the characters of this film, a number of times. Generally speaking, it doesn't take much wealth, relatively speaking, to build a house in South Asia, and these usually look like mansions to Western eyes, but that's because they are meant to accommodate at least three generations of family. In the cities it's a different story; most people live there for work, so accommodation tends to be more modest, but it's not where they put down roots. This film is undoubtedly good family fare, but it is guilty of completely airbrushing out any sign of poverty, and this was never the case before in Bollywood. The reception of this film was not as universally positive as people might recall, and it was precisely for this reason. As a counterpoint, may I suggest Yaro, Sunlo Zara from Rangeela, or Mere Gully Mein, from Gully Boy? Both deal with the grittier side of life, without seeming maudlin
@AB207793 жыл бұрын
Its an old tradition in Hindu Weddings to hide Groom's shoes and get money from Bride's elders. Its just for fun. And in the movie, Madhuri's elder sister dies and elders in the family decide (that use to happen in India in older days in most cases , elders use to decide to whom the son or a daughter will marry, not nowadays though) that she should marry her brother in law to take care of his new born child. And there are lots of twists and turns.

Playful Fun during weddings. Grooms Shoes to be taken by Bridesmaids. In return the groom will have to pay the bridesmaids for return of grooms shoes. The grooms mates/cousins (usually males) duty that day is to ensure grooms shoes are not taken and if they do get taken, get them back before the end of wedding, where at that point the groom requires his shoes to leave. Its a kind hearted playful fun and a great way for grooms single mates to meet brides single friends and have a bit of fun during sometimes lengthy tedious weddings.

As much as I love HAHK, Madhuri and Salman. I don't think you will be able to understand this song and film without basic idea or knowledge of mostly North Indian, specifically states of Delhi and UP based "Marriage rituals and customs including fun ones and even after marriage ones". There's a fun custom in marriage, sisters of the bride try to steal groom's shoes and groom's friends, brothers, family try to hide and save them. If the sisters of bride are successful in stealing the groom's shoes then some money is paid by groom's family to bride's sisters in exchange of giving back the shoes.
