A BUSY 90 MINUTES At Moss Vale Railway Station - Australian Trains - Heritage, Passenger, Freight

Today Schony747 features a busy Moss Vale Railway Station in The Southern Highlands of New South Wales which is located on the mainline south towards Victoria and is also the junction to Wollongong. In between the arrival and departure of The Southern Highlander Passenger Train, I had around 90 minutes to capture the movements around the railway station and it turned out to be a busy 90 minutes at the station. 3 passenger trains, 3 Pacific National freights and the shunting movements of steam locomotive 3801 and the Southern Highlander heritage passenger train had me filming from many locations around the station.
There's lots of viewing around Moss Vale in this 20 minutes so enjoy. Have a great week - Brenden S.

Wow, this brings back memories. I was shown around that Signal box in the mid 70's. Hasn't changed much around there.

I haven't been to Moss Vale for about 10 years and it's just as I remember it from back then as well. Nothing really changes it seems

Australia has some classic streamliners and fortunately like the UK there are still a number in preservation so the new generation can enjoy these machines as well

Great to see you on my turf Schony !!! I visit Moss Vale pretty regularly (from Bulli), as I do some work with a company there who are about 3km North of the station on the left of the main line. Their factory is right opposite the junction and yard for the freight branch to the Blue Circle cement plant at Berrima. There is a fair bit of action on this short 5km stretch, several types of freight get down to the plant, and products back. There is also the Ingham's chicken plant a couple of km down the branch and they operated with rail up until a couple of years ago - it's most on the road now. Pairs of 81s normally handle the freight but last year a dirty, dusty 48 was lurking in the yard too, I took a few good shots.

It was certainly a busy time and this was a Sunday. The only thing missing was the Qube Harefield shuttle!

11:16 If I'm not mistaken, that's an Endeavour set with an extra centre carriage. We in the Newcastle/Hunter region only ever see these as two-car sets running from that *eyesore* at Wickham, up to Maitland and beyond.

That's the Xplorer set for long distance. The Endeavour is the two car setm

@@Schony747 Well, it certainly looked like an Endeavour set, The Explorers had *"Countrylink"* emblazoned on their sides. This set did not have that.

@@neilforbes416 That is because Xplorer's and Endeavours are the exact same thing. Endeavours are only 2 car sets with 2+3 seating and Xplorers are 2-4 car sets with 2 + 2 long distance seating and buffets.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me, how many sets (either explore, endeavour) can fit at the Mossvale platform either 1 or 2. Allegedly 3 sets fit i.e 2 endeavours and a xplorer set - but curious to know if you can squeeze 4 there lol

I don't know the station that we'll but it would be a very tight squeeze to fit 4.

The inrermodal from Perth is a common sight across Australia. The limestone train and the passenger cars definitely local to NSW.

Excuse my ignorance, but why do Perth - Sydney trains travel via Moss Vale and not via Lithgow?

I'm not absolutely sure, but the blue mountains line is very steep, therefore more fuel, and also a lot busier so harder for freight trains to get a path.

I asked the quedtion and this was the respone - SP7 PS7 run vis the Blue Mountains as the loading is alot lighter. PS5 SP5 run via Cootamundra as the loading is heavier and the train gets double stacked at Parkes.
