I'm of two minds on this. On the one hand I can see how Israelis were driven mad by the murder of 1200 citizens (over half civilians) and the taking of 250 hostages by Hamas. If you believe in "an eye for an eye and a life for a life," then retaliation taking 1200 lives is Bronze Age justice. On the other hand, it was alarming to see Israel's political and propaganda machines in America attack anyone who advocated for mercy and humanitarian assistance for Gaza's civilians. After the death toll exceeded 1200, then something else was going on: group punishment. There's also something fishy about Israel's IDF's slow response to the invasion, and ignoring warnings. I think it's mostly a sign of arrogance that they wouldn't dare, and incompetence by the regime. However, they seem not to be interested in negotiating for the release of the hostages, but rather using the attack and continued status of the hostages to wage war, or ethnic cleansing. Also, as typical for authoritarian regimes, they want no investigation into lapses that led to the October 7th massacre and poor response.

It's not "Israelis" I think this is apart of a number of problems that have occurred with this issue, particularly in relation to American politics. It is the right-wing government of Netanyahu, which yes, was able to consolidate power in the aftermath, similar to what happened in America after 9/11. But there are also (in a minority) peace-seeking liberals within Israel who do not condone the actions of the government, and even more who are upset that Netanyahu's campaign did not prioritize the lives of the hostages and seek in good faith a compromised cease fire that would have brought them home alive. I think this context will be important because we are now about to see a right-wing American government partnered with a right-wing Israeli government, and although there may be voices who object to their actions, they have cemented extreme military power and there is nothing left to control their worst instincts.

I grew up in 3 Muslim countries with a parent who had horrible experiences with Jewish businessmen (along with his friends/families). I'm not pro-either peoples, but the hostage/rape/murder of Israelis was obviously unacceptable by any American standard.
