Ultimately, it IS the inaccuracy of their nit picks that kills CinemaSins for me. I have trouble watching CinemaSins, not because I don’t find it unfunny, mean-spirited, or nit-picky. I always knew CinemaSins was never meant to be taken seriously, and it’s just a silly way to kill 10 - 20 minutes. It’s the fact that they don’t care to get their facts straight. I mean, what’s the point in watching someone humorously nit pick a movie if it’s not actually addressing what’s happening in the movie? That’s not funny; that’s not enjoyable. Anyone can fail to pay attention to a movie and construct unfair criticisms about it afterwards.

quleughy Bill puts it pretty well - sometimes, it's hard to riff on a movie because it's just a genuinely good and enjoyable film, and there's not much to make fun of. At that point, you can either try and lean a bit more towards playing with the movie and making jokes around it... or you can just start inventing things so you can mock them. Cinemasins has a bad habit of doing the latter.

Yet plenty of people call them wrong on "everything" they say, even the stuff they are accurate about. Bob is no exception to this, as many times in his own videos, he doesn't adequately explain why Cinemasins is wrong for a certain sin or he ends up intentionally ignoring what Jeremy even said, like he does in his Avengers Civil War video. Maybe that's a play on "getting things wrong" thing, but that kinda defeats the purpose of even calling Cinemasins out. Bob doesn't go through *all* the sins they say, becasue some of them are actually correct. It's just pure laziness to say, it's always wrong. It's the same as people going on and on about that stupid"lap dance" gag, which Cinemasins hasn't even been doing consistently for like 3 years now

quleughy This, the moment I learned that a lot of the sins are wrong or made up I stopped watching and never looked back. There is zero point to the videos after that if I can't be sure if a point is bullshit or not.

I had no idea about Cinemasins' background until watching Bob's video that explained how Jeremy and Chris both came from an online viral marketing background. Suddenly, the clickbait nature and how little they seem to care about everything makes perfect sense, that they took several stabs at video marketing and content creation until Cinemasins was the thing that stuck.

What I learned from watching this is that making parodies, criticisms, or even commentaries looks _fucking hard_ . MST3k had to watch movies 9 times, pre-write jokes, field test them to see if they feel natural when spelled out, etc. This is like....much much more intricate than I realized. I guess, since this form of parody involving cracking jokes with movies in seemingly real time is a pretty new type of content in the grand scheme of film history, not many people recognize what it takes to determine its quality and how to do it right.

Even for dumb little movie reviews like mine, I watch a movie three times. First, for taking notes, second to go over it again for things I might have missed and potentially come up with new jokes and criticisms, and third for writing the script.

I understand that you didn't like the "machine-gun humour" of the first episode of the new MST3K, but I would really like you to elaborate why you seem to have such a severe distaste of the overall season. I mean, just that one criticism from a single episode doesn't seem to be awful enough for the over-dramatic "we don't talk about it" referral in your 'Sustaining Stupidity' CinemaSins video. I'd really like to know, as I like the new Netflix version, and can argue my point of view, if you need me to. Alternately, if your criticism is justified, I can stop ruining MST3K by my liking of the latest season.

If he didn't care for it, that's fine, I think what annoyed me about that comment in the "Sustaining Stupidity" video was that he said "WE don't talk about that" as if there was some consensus among fans that it's awful. All but one of the people I know that love MST3K loved the new season, most people I see talk about it online seemed to like it, im not sure where this "WE" is coming from.

Nice interview. Congratulations on finally getting a chance to talk to Bill! I think Bill makes a very important point that is relevant to the problem with Cinemasins: MST3K and RiffTrax include a lot of different types of jokes, many of which are not in any way criticisms of the movie they are riffing. Also, even when they do criticize the movie, they often do it in an indirect way that is entertaining: by putting deliberately absurd dialogue into a character's mouth, for example (as in the Squirm excerpt you used in your Sustaining Stupidity video). This, for me, is the real fundamental problem with Cinemasins. They are often inaccurate in their criticisms/nitpicks, as you have very effectively shown in other videos. Even if they were always 100% correct in their critiques, though, I still don't think the channel would be effective comedy. The problem is that there is nothing particularly funny about someone stridently pointing out plot holes and continuity errors in a movie (at least, I don't find it funny). A greater degree of artfulness and even indirection is required--which is what MST3K did well and I think RiffTrax does well today.

I STILL watch MST tapes every night before I go to bed (anywhere from 5 mins to an hour). I have this old tv/vcr combo and a cardboard box full of recorded VHS episodes from when the show aired on comedy central and the sci fi channel. I also have found your videos denouncing cinema sins to be HUGELY cathartic as I watched one or two and ended up arguing with the monitor about how wrong the critiques were if you'd actually watched the movie in question. Keep up the good work.

Ok, I gotta ask. I never liked CinemaSins and their what their definitions of sins and satire are either, but this is.. kind of obsessive. I could read the motive of this video already two minutes in. You picked apart their videos, which was interesting. Then you put out "Sustaining Stupidity"-- an analysis of their whole channel. And even though you talk about CS briefly here, it seems like you just invited someone to your soapbox leading them to your opinions on CS. It's noticeably weird how much you talk about them, man. It's been the subject of most of your videos in the past year. I mean it's one thing to be loud about how you don't like the channel. Have at it. It DID inspire other people to wake up to them, putting out their own "Everything Wrong with CS" videos I've seen on the "recommended" tab. But what's the end goal with this? Do you wish they'd just stop? Be better? Respond to you?

i wish they'd be better. know that i have another gaming channel that i've been working on, a HUGE video for my silent hill channel 'thegratedebate' that i've been writing, a full-time job, and haven't uploaded a video about cinemasins in months. and trust me, i could. i could really pump out content about their latest nonsense videos, the fact that a cs writer hit up my dm's to fix their EWW videos, and how cs just deleted various videos i referenced in my 'sustaining stupidity' video, like the 'breast cancer awareness month' video and all of their 'before and after movie review' videos. cs is an interest of mine, sure - but i'm over them. 'sustaining stupidity' was meant to be my final cinemasins video, because i realize that by doing so many of these particular videos i'll become just as bad as cinemasins. the reason i talked to bill about them is because talking to bill about _anything_ is, as i say in the video, a childhood dream of mine. i took the opportunity. if that makes me seem 'obsessed' despite everything i've just told you, so be it.
