A director is casting dancers for a large production. Large numbers of hopefuls audition, hoping to be selected. Throughout the day, more and more people are eliminated, and the competition gets harder. Eventually, approximately a dozen dancers must compete for a few spots, each hoping to impress the director (Michael Douglas) with their dancing skill. But, is this really what the director is looking for?

@Isaac Mulisa Okay, (1) the film isn’t actually that well-known (see its low number of ratings on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes), and (2) there’s a difference between underrated and overlooked. An overlooked film is one that’s obscure, whereas an underrated one is a film that’s generally considered to be bad (but is actually good). Popularity has nothing to do with whether or not something is underrated.

Some critics panned this movie, because it wasn't the stage show. Never saw the show, so I enjoy the film on its own merits - a gutsy musical glimpse of dancers as they experience Broadway's allure and agony. And I get to see Terrence Mann dance!
