I remember my mom telling me a story about how she and all her women lawyer friends would regularly get together when they were just starting out. There weren't that many of them so they all knew each other. One of them had a young school-age son. One day I think someone mentioned a male lawyer they knew and the kid was totally confused. He thought only women could be lawyers because he'd simply never seen a male lawyer. :)

So many comments along the lines of 'but most firefighters, pilots, surgeons are men' THAT'S THE POINT!! but this whole message could be turned around so easily. have the children draw some dancers and a nurse and it's likely they'll draw women and not men so we surely we should also teach boys what they can do too?
@yazmac
@yazmac 7 жыл бұрын
That wouldn't be turning the message around, that is the message. The video concentrates on the girls as they are the ones with the disadvantage, by showing the children that they can be whoever they want the boys learn that lesson too. When a video like this concentrates on females, that isn't saying there isn't issues with males, it's saying that it is the females that need the most help for the moment as they are the ones at the disadvantage. It's like the Black Lives Matter movement. Yes All Lives Matter but right now people need to pay extra attention to Black Lives because they are the ones facing the extreme disadvantage. By tackling the extreme disadvantages, the less extreme ones gain recognition and resolution also.

yazmac I see what you mean but for girls they are just not really told they can be firefighters or doctors etc. However, for boys there is a negative stigma towards wanting to be a nurse or a dancer etc. Because they aren't "manly" and they shouldn't be that job
@yazmac

william warren That is true, these roles are seen as feminine, and therefore weak or not challenging. Another reason why feminism is so important for both young girls and young boys. By challenging these stereotypes professions will become open to more genders. As more women take on challenging roles, people will realise that being feminine is not a bad thing, it does not equal a weakness or disadvantage and as such the roles that are seen as feminine will no longer be a threat to males.

+yazmac no it will not! When given all the options mean and women still go for stereotypical gender roles. gender roles are a thing for a reason. women and men are not equal and never will be. Look at animals, most species have gender roles, what makes you think we are different? And feminism I'd not needed in the western world.

why does this have so many down votes and negative comments? I grew up with preconceived ideas that me and other women will never be firefighters, surgeons or fighter pilots, because I never saw or heard of any. I grew up with constrained ideas of what I could do, if i were a female kid in this class I might've thought differently about myself and others. I only didn't think differently because of the close minded and "anti SJW" culture people still push, in classrooms, in the comment sections of youtube videos.

Aww, this makes me weepy. I grew up with the Women's Liberation Movement in the 1960s & 70s, in California USA. I thought this remedied the gender inequality issues. I was very wrong. My mother was considered a pioneering scientist of her day, simply because she was female. She actually had to get permission from my father to "allow" her to be working (!!). Isn't that awful? Yet, not only did she have a full-time career, but a full-time job at home, parenting six young children (she bore 6 kids in 6 years), housekeeping, and waiting on my father hand & foot. Mom also put my father through college. I remember learning in school that Marie Curie had discovered the element radium, but only her husband could be credited. This work of hers revolutionized the diagnostic tool of X-ray machines, and was integral to the treatment of cancers. When I began working as a scientist myself, in 1974, I was thoroughly shocked by the mistreatment, stereotyping, and onslaught of sexual harassment, including physical assaults while on the job. I recall undergoing psychological testing in Grade 8, because they were trying to figure out how a girl could be excelling in Math & Science. Seriously. Saddens me, now that I'm retired, to see how children are still being brainwashed into sexism. SMH.
@kanewalker1077

Could it not be that statistically speaking there are more male firefighters, surgeons and fighter pilots then female, so it would make sense to draw a male. When on average being male. Though this would likely change done on an older age group. So don't think its really sexism just they at such a young age have properly not seen as many in those professions female than male.

+Walker Kane I do understand your comment, and the points you bring up are definitely valid and are true, however I also believe that unequal representation in media is partly to blame. When I was younger, I don't think I ever saw any of these professions in real life; I never saw a real firefighter, however I did see Fireman Sam a lot. That helped my brain think "firefighter = male". So whilst there are probably more males in these professions, it doesn't mean they should be the only ones we see in the media. Thankfully nowadays both men and women are beginning to be represented equally (:

Gender roles are "pushed" on kids from a very early age. People don't even realise they are doing it because that's what they've been brought up with too. So teaching them that women can do these jobs that are "meant for men" - before they become older and their minds aren't as open to interpretation anymore - is important. Don't understand the message of this video? Don't fucking comment.

Not being funny, but every kid knows that women can do those jobs, it's just that they choose to see what the media represents, which is what real life is, if a majority of men are playing rugby at an international level, and are therefore getting more media coverage due to revenue, etc, they're more inclined to think about that. It doesn't mean that they don't know women play rugby.

+Emily Brooks I completely understand what the "point" this video is attempting to make. However, the true point is that, at that age 1.kids don't care which gender does what. 2.kids aren't sexist. 3.kids aren't ignorant enough to believe that only men can be firefighters, doctors, etc. The children simply draw what is statistically true, due to their experiences in their life so far. They don't need to be shown that a woman can be a firefighter, because they already know that they can...
@Hal03014
@Hal03014 7 жыл бұрын
+Emily Brooks where did I say that children know and study statistics? I didn't. Don't blind yourself with anger when trying to prove a point just to have it blow back up in your face. I said they drew what is statistically true. Which is that more drew men than women, which correlates with the numbers of those in the workplace for those specific jobs. Next time, please don't be rude, formulate a proper argument and then we can have a proper discussion on important things, such as rape culture and the wage gap which hinder women's lives every day.

+Emily Brooks why did you reply in a sarcastic way and a way that showed you either didn't fully read my statement or didn't understand it. In my experience in the "real world" people only jump to such conclusions if they are either angry, or simply not clever enough to understand. I appreciate what you are saying, but in reality, no child believes that only a man can be a firefighter or doctor, just as no child believes only a woman could be a ballet dancer. If this is a problem, it is most definitely not found at this age group but one that is a few years older when children become more exposed to "radical" media and begin to formulate their ideas based on prejudices and agendas pushed by these media outlets.

In Germany I think the steriotypes are even more supported by the fact that we mostly use the male "Job-name" with the german male article "der". While this name can actully also describe a female, it is, due to the article, associated with the male stereotype. An Example: "DER Doktor" (the doctor) can be seen as a neutral job or as a male person. "DIE Doktor-IN" is the female version of the same word that only specfically describes a female. This works with almost every job, with only very few exeptions. The German word for nurse "DIE Hebamme" is more used in its female form. In a nutshell: -We have a "neutral version" of the job but it goes with the male article. It is the more common used version. -We also have a "female version" that is only used when there actually is a woman who works as this job.

@CNWPlayer 2 жыл бұрын
It’s similar in Spanish. (I’m not a native speaker though.) El niño (the child) can be a child (neutral) or a boy (masculine) while La niña (the girl) can only be a girl (feminine).

When we are brought up to think that men are soldiers and men are doctors and men are firefighters and men are race car drivers while women are nurses and women are receptionists and women are kindergarten teachers.....it has an impact and maybe part of the reason these jobs are so heavily skewed is BECAUSE of that impact.This was done to expose to these young kids (nobody else) that women can do jobs these kids might have considered women can do.They should have done the inverse and shown that guys can be nurses and hairdressers etc. That's the only valid complaint I can understand.

That gave me strength and many skills and interests I would never have if I would live in town. It also allowed me to discover in what direction I should be going with my carrier. So my point is - everybody should have opportunity to pursue his or her abilities without gender pressure - that something is for girls or for boys only. And you are a good example of that. Instead, I grew up wanting to be a model, (despite being completely average-looking, lol!) To be a model though, was regarded in my childhood as the best thing a woman could be. It's so disturbing that there are still so many people who are much more offended about the fact that every worker shown to these children was a woman, when this video so clearly illustrates just how deep-rooted children's ideas of gender are (thus necessitating the very real need for such a demonstration). But yeah, let's whinge about "feminist pandering" while more girls grow into women who think that the best they can be is an ornament, shall we?

I find it funny how people have a problem when some little kids find out that it doesn't matter if their a girl or guy, they can pursue a job they want. There is no harm in this. Would you rather the teachers say, "Okay class. If you're a girl, you are a sweet little nurse. And if your a boy you can be a big strong firefughter!!" Kids have the potential to change the world, so why would you want them to live in restricted boundaries of what they can or cannot do? Yes I do agree that this same test needs to be done with boys, but saying that doesn't change the fact that these teachers are broadening these young girls' view of themself. These is nothing wrong with that. In fact, if you have a problem with it, I believe you have some reflecting to do.

@imnotstpid
@imnotstpid 7 жыл бұрын
I think that was their intention, but to say their assumptions have been turned around is pushing it. The real question raised here is "Are they inherently 'mens jobs', or are they just 'mens jobs' because more men do them?". In which case, is it that the jobs don't appeal to the girls, or that the girls are actually turned off from the jobs by societal pressures? I think fighter pilots and firefighters will always have a much higher percentage of men in them, and I don't really think anyone would argue against that. Trying to get more women as surgeons I can see as a good use of time though. The problem most people have with this video is that they're showing kids that girls can do 'men's jobs', but they're completely ignoring that boys can do 'women's jobs'. I'd even go as far as to say that more focus should be on the boys doing 'women's jobs' like nursing or teaching, since girls are already praised for performing a 'mans job' like being a surgeon - whereas boys are mocked for doing 'womens jobs' like nursing. I think it's worth the effort to reduce societal pressures on kids and open up 'gender specific' roles to both genders. However, I think it's mostly a waste of effort to try and suggest kids do jobs that are either genuinely gender specific, or jobs that only 2% of those kids would ever be interested in anyway.

Instead of making them realise they can be a firefighter if they want to, what ends up happening is that the girls see that the boys are dominating these fields with no explanation as to why that is so they assume it's sexism. This then leads them to become resentful towards men and make them feels as though they are victims of discrimination and you end up with a bunch of radical feminists filled with resentment saying they want to kill all men. The message is not a good one, even though it was supposedly made with good intentions.

I think many people are missing the point of this video. The point of this video is REPRESENTATION: if kids keep seeing surgeons/firefighters/air pilots as men then little girls will grow up just assuming they are not able to achieve those things or rather that they should not go into those professions because they are "for boys". And for the people saying "this video shows a child's mind being uncorrupted by society's bullshit", that is not true. This video shows the opposite; children are socialised from a young age. You only need to look at how boys and girls are raised. Girls wear pink and play with dolls, while if a boy wants to wear pink and play with a doll he's gay or feminine and his parents panic. Yes, these jobs are done by mostly men...but why? What does physical strength have to do with being a SURGEON? Essentially, we are taught from such a young age that there are jobs for men and jobs for women. The video is just highlighting how children are socialised.

When you're saving lives what you are is out of the question. You're not a man or a woman. You're a firefighter, or a surgeon, or a pilot, or something defined by what you do. I understood that far before I was 7.

it wouldn't be wrong for a 5 year old to assume that a physical job is done by a male considering try have no clue whatsoever about stereotpyes and gender equality. they wouldn't have been influenced by anything , only going by what they see

So no acknowledgement of the fact that, for all three of these careers men are TYPICALLY either 1) More inclined to choose them as professions, because the genders think differently. 2) More capable at these professions, mentally or physically

Well, your first explanation has been completely blown out of the water by this video. So, no acknowledgment from you then, that the reason men are more inclined to choose them as professions, and the reason genders think differently, is because as young children, they are taught by what they see and what they have learned from those around them, that, as you said in your second example, women aren't capable of these professions, even though it proves in this video, that women can perform surgery, be a firefighter & a pilot jet? The reason why genders think differently is not because of their own doing, but what they learned growing up. Women are taught at young ages that to be a princess with a hero to protect us is the right way to live. They are taught, by thousands, upon thousands of people, with your exact mindset, that they aren't & can never be mentally or physically capable of doing the same work. But, we now have women in the Marines. Women in the front line in battles. Women police, firefighters, surgeons, construction workers, plumbers & even a possible future president of our country!! Women, for so long, have never been able to prove their worth, because men have not allowed them. I am not a huge feminist. In fact, a lot of them exaggerate. But, the fact is, women have, for years, wanted to be in jobs dominated by men & men have deliberately made it impossible for them, claiming they weren't capable. Fact is women proved them wrong when finally allowed to enter programs such as the Army Rangers. And all of the jobs I mentioned above, and more, once they were finally allowed. What is truly fucked up is that men like yourself, will always try to make it impossible for any woman to be equal with you, in any way, shape or form. Worse than that is that you teach young girls & women that they are less than you, mentally & physically. Let's see you do what Olympic gold medalist for Gymnastics, Simone Biles did this year. Or, Serena Williams. Or, all the other medal winning women in Olympics. See if you can do it. And, if we want to talk about the stronger sex, guess which one dies the most at an early age because they aren't strong enough? Men. Very sad this happens, but it's a fact. Also, lets see men go through labor. Yeah, we can see that on video. See how they handle it.And their experiment only lasted 1 hour. Ask how many women would have loved to endure just 1 hour of labor. Pretty funny video to watch. But, you being the big tough burly man you are, will probably laugh & say to yourself, "Oh, I could do that while eating pie." I will say I am surprised they managed to survive to the end of the highest pain level, even if it was for only minutes, compared to our hours. Still, congrats to these men. hotair.com/greenroom/archives/2013/05/15/can-men-handle-the-pain-of-child-birth/

+Tammy McMillan I would love to provide you with an equally lengthy paragraph as to why you are completely and utterly wrong, but I won't bother....because your lot TIME AND TIME AGAIN either simply refuse to acknowledge truths about the genders, or will shutdown such debates entirely. I guess ignorance really is bliss after all.
