I always appreciated that this story just ended with no update. I feel like a lesser author would have felt the need to add a final journal update, pulling the whole 'This is Ted's girlfriend/brother/whatever. I got his login and I'm here to update you all that he's gone missing-', but instead the story trusts the audience to understand the implication and come to their own conclusions. It's just so much more chilling that way.

The creepiest thing for me was that this thing in the cave was gently tugging on the rope as they were exiting, not because it was trying to follow them, but just to let Ted and B know that it knew they were there, and it didn't have to chase them to make them come back.
@PeninsulaPaintings
@PeninsulaPaintings Жыл бұрын
For some reason, my strongest theory is that the entity is the spirit of Floyd Collins, trying to keep people in the cave with him. If you recall from the actual story, he tried to trap a firefighter inside the cave when it was collapsing by begging for a drink, he was so desperate for company in the face of death that he was willing to trap another person. It would also explain why the entity doesn't seem aggressive, just lingering, trying to pull Ted in.

I think the creepiest part of this story is the strange unanimous decision from Ted, Joe, and B to go back. Not a word of discussion or worry, they just all agree to go back to where I assume all three of them are killed. It’s like a trance that forces them into a suicidal mission.

One thing I’ve realised is that it’s possible the dog, with it’s more acute sense of smell, realised the horrible scent quickly and that’s what shook it, rather than it seeing anything directly. If it’s this scent which captures the victim in the hallucinations, anxiety and distress, than it’s clear why the order of victims goes as follows: whip(dog), joe, Ted, B’. (Note: Man I love how you never see anything of the creature, the omission of sight is an incredible technique, as you only have the vague indicators of scent, aural faculty and a sort of fifth sense of intuition. Almost as if you’re in a cave, throughout the entire story you are ‘in the dark’)

The idea that behind this round boulder, a 45 degree decline as far as he could see, just makes me imagine he maybe missed words in scripted "abandon all hope ye who enter"

@@atashgallagher5139 I mean, it is fantastic poetry, but linguistic wise, just as piece of literature Bible suprasses it 1000 times. People are enamoured by divine comedy, because a huge portion of it is about hell and people are fascinated by hell. And Bible itself is not exactly coy with the concept of Hell, but is not very interested in it either and refuses to fully describe it. As bible is supposed to be a path to salvation, not The Deamonoglies.

I'm curious, can a layman safely go into relatively tight caves with a guide? I'd like to try my hand at going through restrictions with an experienced guide in an already explored cave. Obviously there isn't a Cave Police Department that'll stop me, but I don't want to do something that would be putting me in immediate danger. It sounds like an interesting thrill.

In my culture (Navajo) you’re not allowed to enter any caves or really underground at all. This is because we define ourselves as Earth Surface People (Diné) and therefore we do not belong underground, as we are not moles, insects, etc. Also only the dead go under the Earth, and we don’t wish that upon ourselves so we stay up here where we belong. Plus our creation story says we came up from below, and visiting caves would be like going backwards, which is frowned upon.

Story time papa meat, my dad likes to explore old mines in Eureka Utah. One time I went with my dad, only one time, and after exploring for a bit we went to one of the main chambers and as I looked down I realized the dirt was falling through what turned out to be old rotten wooden boards covering an endless pit that I happened to be standing on. I noped the heck out of there and never went again. My dad on the other hand wanted to see how sturdy a platform was that was covering yet again a bottomless pit and started stomping on it x_x' His response to my concerns during his crazy adventures was simply, " Don't worry, I have life insurance. Literally just got home from my first caving trip and man this hits different. We were underground for around 4 hours about a mile in, mostly belly crawling and wall-to-wall traversing. It’s incredible. Total darkness is no joke, and God forbid you get stuck or lose your way. Because unlike what most media would have you believe, much of the rock past a certain depth absorbs sound. We went through passages where if you were more than a few meters away and didn’t have a clear line of sight on someone’s mouth, you wouldn’t hear them even if they shouted. Even though we weren’t in there for very long some in the group burned out their headlamps from a full charge because they had them on the highest setting. We had extras ofc, and backup batteries for those extras, but God damn keep those bitches on the lowest possible brightness. I will absolutely go cave diving again. If someone gets stuck next time I go, I am more than willing to stay with them until either they squeeze out or emergency services arrives. I will never leave anyone behind if I can help it. It probably isn’t the worst way to die, but it’s up there with some of the most upsetting for anyone even remotely unsure about caving

I've been spelunking before. Going through a part of the cave where you had to jump from one ledge to another over a gap is in my top 5 scariest experiences. The cave was obviously dark so you could see the edge of the ledge, but you couldnt see the other one. You also couldnt see how deep the gap is, although you could hear the water rushing through it at the bottom. the guide said the gap was only 2 feet wide and about 20 feet deep, but it felt like i was jumping over an endless abyss.

When I was 12 at a month long adventure camp in the mountains of Pennsylvania, I signed up for a caving trip with several other kids. Most were about 14-16 as I was the youngest age they allowed. When we arrived they made us sign waivers and our parents sign them as well because the cave we were exploring had claimed several lives. I was scared but wanted to prove to myself that I could work through that fear. What I didn’t realize was that it wouldn’t be only fear I’d end up fighting through, but extreme cold, the cold that had killed several other cavers. To start off this cave you have to crawl on your belly through water. At first, this isn’t so bad. Several of the kids tapped out right when they saw the water, while others refused to even enter the tiny cave. Our guide was an enthusiastic daredevil who loved caves and once we were in, we had to keep up. No turning back. As I crawled through the cold water, it soaked through my normal hiking clothing completely. It was all I had to wear, no wetsuit or something that could keep me warm while wet, but it wasn’t so bad in the shallow caves as we crawled and scrambled around. As we went deeper and deeper, however, moving quickly, I soon became so deeply chilled that I couldn’t feel my hands or feet. I was a small girl and the youngest and smallest in the group, and I was fit, so I was able to move quickly and keep up, but the cold got to me after an hour, then another hour in the bitter, damp cold, deeper and deeper in the caves, my wet clothing clinging to my body and growing colder with the air. Soon I was shivering so violently it was hard to move. I remember an older teenage girl at the very depths of the cave as we went into our second hour crawling downward tried to hold me and warm me up. We stayed down there for three hours. It was a long road coming back up and through the water again to make it to the surface. I’ll never do it again, but it taught me a lot.

This sounds awful! Why were you not told how to dress and what to prepare for?

I unfortunately fell victim to the beautifully crafted Blair witch hoax of 99. I was 16 and went to see it in theaters in Amarillo TX. I remember vividly all the news about the 3 missing college students and all the interviews of the people who knew them etc. the hype went on for weeks before the movie came out, after watching that movie & thinking it was real I was petrified! I almost peed my pants having to walk to the car by myself bc my freaking mom had to stop at the bathroom before we left, CURSE HER BLADDER! God I was so scared. It was only a few days later that the 3 actors would show up on the tonight show for an interview and the hoax would be shattered.. I remember thinking hmmm maybe I shouldn’t trust watching MTV for all my news lol. They really pulled it off for a while though! Kudos to them!

I literally just got done watching a Wendigoon video, no bullshit….😅 I can’t lie I was borderline freaked out when I refreshed the page and the TOP recommended video is a Papa Meat x Wendigoon posted 45 minutes prior. He’s one of the most genuine people on the platform, and I can say that without hesitation. Such a kind man that covers such a wide variety of topics, in extreme detail, and he seems to sincerely love the community his channel has curated as a whole. Touché guys, stoked to watch!

I can’t explain the feeling of seeing that this video was over an hour long and how happy I was. My favorite KZbinr, immediately supporting more on Patreon. This content is much appreciated.

It's still so cool to me that 2 of my favorite youtubers became friends and actually have great banter and chemistry.

Times were simpler when the internet was still a little keyfabe. Great story. Great episode.

As Wendigoon spoke on how caves are like being in the digestive system of a massive creature, it made me think that it would be super creepy/cool if this was linked to the mystery flesh pit story Like maybe the reason it was so hard to break through the rock surrounding the hole, it because its enamel and the maw lies on the other side. Would make a sick movie/video game
