I'm at 1:13:00 and the second I heard she was happy made something click, and my thought process rn is that they kidnap children to turn them into this powder, I don't know the method, for some sort of mystical healing properties which is why she is no longer infertile, and why Kimber was able to be born in the first place since her mother was also infertile. I have no idea how close or far from the plot I am but I feel like it's pretty damn close.

I really think the worst part (worst in a good way, in a sense of portraying the depravity) of borrasca is the implications of Sam's father being the one to impregnate Whitney routinely. Her babies being "shit" is a result of the inbreeding. It vividly mentions how Sam is built and looks like his father and she flinches when she sees Sam because she sees her father and is aware of the routine.

I'm thinking that prescott was manipulating meera, meaning that he may have told everyone to not eat there, so that he would have to keep the business on float, but always making meera feel bad about it, like he didnt let het put up publicity or anything like that, so that plus the infertility he's just pushing her into the adoption thing, she was also obsessed with the lineage thing so maybe she was constantly rejecting prescotts baby, and he was trying to get her on board because she could be a liability, but if she take the baby that would make her an accomplice so she would be under control

The symbolism around everything is insane: "Borrasca" meaning a mine that has run dry. The fact that all the mines ran dry in Drisking long ago, and when they did, the Prescotts turned to their current source of income. The fact that when the women ran dry, they were tossed away and new, fresh sources of income were acquired. A means to an end. Absolutely some of the best writing I've ever read.

One of the most intersting things that sparked me was how Kimber had a "motherly" role, as if implied fom that start. Just how Parker clinged to HER when they were in the treehouse (you would have thought Parker would be more comforted with his brother, I dunno), and the fact that she was babysitting kids, as well. I think that very subtly suggested a weird maternal connection from the very beginning.

Prescott wasn't allowed to touch her since she "wasn't one of his" to violate. *Whitney was being bred by her dad, and ONLY her dad, for the past 10 years,* and thus why she couldn't even LOOK at Sam, who looked more like their dad when he got older.

Same here, I was repeatedly SA'd by my cousin throughout 3 to 4-ish years of my life beginning at age 6 until 9 (very funny numbers, I know) and I have to say I really appreciate the respectful way both Wendi and Hunter approached it. I'm currently 17 and still figuring out ways to better cope but I know for a fact I'll try my very best to be the very best in the future. I hadn't known what was Borrasca about until watching this and as tragic as it is, seeing other people with a spine and a proper moral compass acknowledge how horrific these types of acts are helps me in a way scare away all the doubts and guilt I sub-consciously hold about my experiences. Le Guin, where it's this prosperous city that depends on the misery and incarceration of a child. This feels like that same story, of a town that thrives off of something extremely evil, but with a much more . . . I guess "real" atmosphere around it. Literally, the people who discover the existence of the child who live in Omelas, some of them become like Sam and leave scarred. I haven’t seen anybody mention this but *spoilsrs for the last two books of the Grishaverse series* but I’m wondering if Leigha Burdugo took inspiration from Borasca at the end Rule of Wolves. Similarly, young women are going missing around the world, particularly disadvantaged young women, to be collected and r@ped, so they become pregnant with experimental babies. It’s interesting seeing it from the perspective of a young girl figuring it all out rather than Sam, a young boy. She even touched on Nina, the girl who finds all the young women, hearing the cries of all these young women, past who have died and those still stuck there, calling to her and begging her to free them. The weight of generations of human suffering screaming in her brain before she knew what it was. Rule of Wolves is newer so I’m pretty sure Borasca came out first. It was pretty shocking to read in a book that was otherwise, not a horror story

There's even the throwaway line about "shit babies" (although genetic defects don't work like that, really) to hint at this more. @@pucktoad To some extent the depravity of Deputy Walker, Jimmy Bastard (I forgot his last name) and the Sheriff guy could be seen as so cruel and senseless that it comes off as absurd, but I think that might be a way to lessen the impact of what is being described. Child Trafficking and Sex Trafficking are very real evils that represent some of the darkest depths that humanity can go to. The antagonists of Borrasca are pure, unadulterated evil, and in my opinion could be in the ranking for the most despicable villains in a story. So I have to agree with you that the ringleaders are overcharged with malice and so far from feeling sympathy to others that they can come off as comically evil. But, I would have to say that in a way I am grateful for that. If the evil of the ringleaders was toned down, if they were more human and less evil, then I think the story would be more like a true crime documentary, just bleak and depressing. The sociopathy of the ringleaders provides one element of fantasy beyond the made up names and locations that can help the reader to disconnect the horror of Borrasca from their daily life. Like many here, I came into the story blind and having never heard of it, and I never expected it to be as gut-wrenching and depressing as it was. It was so well-written, it got you to invest so much in the characters, the beginning genuinely had such a nostalgic coat of paint like you would see if you looked back into past memories of children playing and interacting, experiencing love and loss, spreading playground rumours and all that, only to have it slowly but surely torn to shreds as the characters grow up, knowing more but still retaining a sort of innocence until the end, and an urban legend which turns out to be more than reality within this world. The characters I got so invested in, the main characters are so wonderfully and realistically portrayed, going from such a tight-knit group of people to being completely and utterly destroyed and torn apart in the worst of ways, each having "died" in their own ways despite being alive and could never go back to the times they had before. Forced to stay alive with the knowledge, burdens and experiences that they have now The narrative beats were set up not only so well, but also so realistically woven in it being an urban kids' legend that turns out to be such a horrendous reality. The recited lines, the skinned men and the shiny gentlemen... The kids have what is happening in Borosca shouted and pummeled directly in their face, but they're all the more oblivious as some situations children cannot grasp the true brevity of what's happening (and at best the surface level aspect). And if it's masked like an urban legend or a simply playground rumour, kids will never properly question it and treat it as just that; an urban legend. Right there at the beginning of their lives, they have what's really going on told directly to them, but only when they've grown old do they realise. And by that time it's already too late The utilizations of concepts so real, tragic, corrupt, and disgusting in the real world explored here in full force with zero masking. To take the most intimate thing in the world and twist it so horrendously, to take the human soul and derive it entirely of humanity and life. Sickening individuals who run Borosca. Even if they're fictional, I hope they all get the worst hell has to offer and that they don't keep the devil waiting when it happens And the fact that none of the characters, nor the audience, can do anything about what goes on there because of how powerful the people in power are is heartbreaking It's horror in a completely different, depressing, and realistic aspect. With lines and aspects that are interpreted with darker implication once you reread it An absolute destruction of innocence and the not only for the characters, but the audience The author is so incredibly brilliant in what they have done and I wish them nothing but success. But this was a wonderfully written creepypasta, and I hate it dearly

Someone pointed out in the comments how the lady giving the guys the info about the town told them they might be too young to go to the mountains but once Sam said he was going with his dad is was all fine (because he was fathering children up there too) adds another layer to the horror. I actually think she didn’t know what was going on, and she was just concerned about them. Her husband mysteriously died years prior, likely because he started asking questions, and she goes missing during the time skip. You have to wonder if she started asking questions after the boys she had just sent off to the mines came back the way they did. I suspect she met the Shiny Gentleman just like her husband for raising suspicions.

Even worse is the idea that he learned about how Drisking “worked” and was very willing to sell his 16 year-old daughter to a r**e dungeon.

actually that's a great example of why IMO the ending doesn't work nearly as well as people are acting like it does. His dad *_also_* says that he'd never give up his daughter, which aside from the implications, means that Prescott has no issues killing people that his dad says should survive. (because Prescott says that after Sam's sister gives birth she'd be killed, and presumably *_is_* killed given he hears the metal roaring after his boss says that they got their kid) So Prescott let this kid who has seen their entire operation just run off (even gave him a car to leave!) even though that kid can take down his entire operation (if after he dropped Kyle off at the hospital, he backed out, found a map, maybe stole some cash or something in the town to pay for gas, and took a road trip a few states over and reported it.) and he clearly has no issues killing people who his dad says should survive. They wrote themselves into a corner where they wanted a gut punch downer ending, but the only way for that to happen is for several characters to behave completely illogically and make incredibly stupid (even long-running) choices on incredibly important issues.

The fact that Kyle and Kimberly are shockingly revealed to be half-siblings is so well foreshadowed and set up in a such fucked up and subtle way. Like the fact that Kimber’s mum had always disliked Kyle and she could never explain why and the fact that Kimberly was only mentioned to have had red hair like twice and that Kyle also was mentioned to have had red hair once. Like the fact that details that seemed so inconsequential early on in the story that later have devastating and disgusting consequences in the end is truly a sign on remarkable storytelling.

It’s crazy the reader spends the entire story waiting for the monster, only to find that the monster is human the whole time, and yet it’s entirely more terrifying than what you were expecting because it’s the furthest thing from what humanity should be. It's December of 2024; it's been 10 months. I am re-listening to this two part series for the 2nd time. I am also listening to this right after listening to Q-Code for the 3rd time! I cannot thank you two enough for introducing me to this story. It was extremely brutal, hearing you read about the stables, but this story is so real. To think that I was bummed this may be a supernatural story, only to wish that it actually was something supernatural by the end. Listening to Cole Spouse's production was incredible, and added so much more depth. Highly recommend everyone check it out. I am now counting down the days till you read part 5 (Borrasca V). I heard you mention in a recent podcast that y'all will be. I truly believe it will give Hunter closure on the subject. Apparently, Isaiah has already read it, so he knows. spoilers for part V: i believe he truly meant the loving whitney part. when sam goes back to drisking in part V and goes to his old home, he finds that the only pictures on the wall are of whitney. Whitney's room is still in tact sam's has been turned into a tanning room. there is literally no remnants of sam in the house, as if they had knly had one child.

one of the worst things for me that i only realized on the second time around is that some of the parents sometimes sell their daughters back, but kimberly's dad didn't want her to be taken. he guarded the letter from kimberly and the prescotts because he knew that if they knew kimberly read the letter, they would take her. so he guarded it, but couldnt stop kimberly from getting to it, and they took her to borrasca to cover it up, then when the father fought against it, he was killed.
