The land lord at my old house taped the dryer outlet to the wall....we ran it one day and it started melting the plug and filled the house with a burning wire smell. That day, we put up a clothesline and never used that dryer again. To this day, I don't run the dryer when we leave the house.

So glad you caught it in time!My friend’s mom literally had to bust a bathroom door down to save another friend that was taking a shower and had no idea that the dryer had caught fire. The house was a total loss. Now I never run the dryer if I’m leaving the house, in the shower or heading to bed. Inconvenient at times, but more convenient than replacing all our worldly possessions.

We had a little dust bunny form over one summer in our gas fireplace under the logs. When we went to light it we got a mini explosion that blew out the pilot light. I was just going to go get dressed for the day. Yeah, we now are careful and keep some lint on hand to start the burn pit. I am less concerned about our dryer now that we have a condensation one. We have it on low heat and it damp dries without an exterior vent to collect extra lent. It just has a lent catcher and a cassette that collects the condensation.

God bless Wes for rescuing Paisley! I am a big advocate for wild horses and leaving them wild wherever possible. (The BLM and cattle industry are no friends of them.) Horses are one of the most magnificent and amazing of all God's creatures! I can, and have sat and watched wild horse bands and their interactions with the members for hours and days. Also, I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see y'all using rope halters and no bits! Yes! No metal in the mouth and no metal on the face. That's oh so good!

A dryer is one of the top fire starters in the country. Lint build up is one of the main culprits. It could also be the vent hose is crushed and.not getting good air flow. Also, a small animal could have gotten into the vent and built a nest. Once you determine the cause, you may want to check the thermostats and the heating element. Also, look over the power cord connection. We had one once that we thought the heating element had burned out. Turned out to be the power cord almost caught on fire. It had gotten really hot and was charred. Thankfully, the thermal cut-off did its job and blew, which shut the dryer off. (I worked in appliance, mower and hvac parts and repair for around 26 years.) So thankful that Miah went in when he did. Please let us know what y'all find. ❤

On horses: You may want to look into getting a Morgan or a Vanner Cob. Both are gentle, hardworking, good-tempered, and strong. Glad everything ended up okay and there weren't any losses. The lint duct can be cleaned out by unhooking the dryer and blowing it out with a leaf-blower from inside the house. Works wonders

Sweet Jess, Thank God there was no house fire!!! OMG when I read your title on your post, my heart sank. Just recently another vlog I follow (Doss Farm) had a house fire. Their house (tiny house) was totally destroyed by fire, and water damage. At 3AM, the entire family was sleeping when the fire srarted. Thank goodness the entire family got out of the house, and no one was hurt. They're struggling but trying to start over. Burning a garden, or a field will bring all kinds of benefits for future growing. Y'all know this from experience, and I'm sure from your farmer friends. I tell ya, old dried plants burn hot, and fast. We contemplated burning around our lagoon to get rid of the over growth but decided not to do it because it would be a handful (basically we chickened out). Your correct on the dryer vent needing continous cleaning. The silver dryer hose going to the outside should be cleaned, or replaced. We replaced ours 6 months ago. We had no idea the hose got that bad. We clean the dryer inside vent with every use, and just thought the hose to the exterior just needs a good vacuuming from the inside out...NOT! The darn thing got crushed, someone in my home pushed the dryer up against hose. I read 6 months ago, that the NFPA states that dryers, and washers cause 92% of the fires out of 15,000 fires each year. We learned our lesson with the crushed hose. We've decided every couple of months to pull the dryer out, and release the clamp to vacuum the hose. I'm thinking about putting a fire alarm in the laundry room. We have 2 other but there down the hallway next to the bedrooms. FYI, hubby, and I are coffee finatics. We just ordered two more bags of Beuhla coffee. Love it!!!

I am sooooo lucky I didn't blow up the entire townhome community. I never, ever leave my house now with my dryer running which I was about to do. I clean my lint trap sometimes 2-3 during a load of very linty drying. I'm so lucky!!! I take my dryer out and clean the hose and the back of the dryer every year after a friend of mine had their dryer catch fire. That freaked me out since I had never thought of doing it. I also put a tag with the date of cleaning so I won't forget to do it once a year. I also take my hot water heater out every two years and clean the mineral build up out and replace the bottom element, also put a date on that too. I am so glad everything was found in time, boy I bet you had a real rush of adrenaline.

I almost caught our house on fire 2 weeks ago with the dryer. The same thing happened. I had been doing laundry all day and then right before I went to sleep I smelled something burning in the dryer. I pulled the dryer apart the next day and was in tears as I pulled out huge clumps of scorched lint. Our dryer is right below our kids rooms, that was the scariest thing that’s happen to me as a parent. I will never run the dryer while we’re sleeping ever again! Pull your dryer drum out and clean the back of the drum between where the heating element is and where the hot air blows into the drum. That’s what was burning on ours, it wasn’t the lint trap and duct work. I’m so glad your family is ok ❤

We recently moved onto 5 acres and are doing a shed to house conversion. We've been in a drought here in Northeast Alabama and fires have been a real issue. Thankfully we haven't dealt with it personally. I have been more mindful in our new home about fire. I won't run the dryer if I know no one will be home. I turn off heaters before leaving. Things like that. Doss Farms just lost their home to a fire. My grandparents lost their home to an electrical fire years ago. It is a tragic and heartbreaking event.

I love Lady’s story and it’s so nice she will have such a peaceful retirement. The first horse as a child that was MY horse was a retired thoroughbred race horse named Danny. He was the most even-tempered, empathetic, and gentle horse we ever had. As the youngest in the family it was pretty cool to have the biggest horse, due to his racing days he had a bad back so no one over 100lbs could ride him. It was a sad day when I outgrew him but we donated him to a children’s therapy retreat that utilized horses and other farm animals as therapeutic tools with kids. He was still quite young, I hope he spent many years there touching the hearts of kids who needed it 🖤

My family had a similar dryer fire, maybe when I was in Jr. Hi. My mother and I were heading out to go shopping. No one else was home. As we walked out of the house, we noticed a hint of smoke in the air. We discovered that the dryer's drum had stopped turning, so the clothes were basically sitting on the heating element. We lost a load of laundry that day but not our house. We were SO thankful that we discovered it when we did. Never again did we leave the house with the dryer running.

I learned a long time ago to never leave a clothes dryer going. A lot of people do; but one time, before I got married, my parents bought a new house, with all new appliances. I was still living at home and I was outdoors getting a little sun. I could smell what smelled like someone ironing cotton fabric; but it seemed like a very hot smell. I came indoors to where the washer and dryer were and the dryer was SO hot, I could not open the door to stop it. I grabbed a towel quickly and got the door opened, which stopped it. I think it was close to bursting into flames. Boy did I learn never to leave a dryer running. I know a lot of people just leave home with it running and don't think a thing of it. But you can imagine this happened in a brand new home, with new appliances. Anything can go wrong!

The dryer vent needs cleaning, it is very scary. Common issue. There is tool that( cheap too!) you can get at Lowe’s - you attach your drill. The dryer works much better after. Glad you caught it.

I've owned horses since I was 12 years old and I am now 71 and I just sold all three that I had left a couple years ago because I had no one to ride with. 15 is not an old age for a horse and I rode a trail horse that had an eye missing. He was very sure-footed and had no problems in the pasture around other horses and I just don't see you retiring a horse at the age of 17 or 18. One of mine was 30 before she was retired. If there are other problems that would keep her from being riden that you didn't mention then maybe retirement is called for, but losing sight in one eye is not usually a problem. They adapt and mine missed being riden on trails when some would be left behind and others got to go. Funny story, I failed retirement myself and now volunteer Monday through Friday every week at a Christian ministry in Asheville, NC.

When I was younger some kids that we went to school with had a house fire due to the dryer. Absolute tragedy, the oldest saved 2 of his 4 siblings. I'm so thankful you and your family are safe.

My dryer pipe at the wall to exterior is only 18 inches long. I was shocked at how much hardened lint had to be scraped from that short pipe. I only think about it when my dryer starts taking longer to dry. This week I changed my AC filters, after just 2 months use, and they were also shockingly dirty. Its hard to remember all these maintenance tasks. I'm so glad Miah caught it fast & you are safe. Horses are wonderful creatures.

Horses who think of people as equals/herdmates will sometimes put their bums to people to ask for scratches/grooming. Watching horses in a field you will often find them standing nose to tail and grooming eachother

I watched my neighbor's house burn down years ago, it caught fire in the middle of the night and all of us around rushed out and got the hoses we could but for an old mobile home there really wasn't anything we could do to save it, luckily no one was home but it was a really humbling experience and I don't think I'll ever forget the smell of the burnt wreckage.

I never go out with any appliance running (accept refrigerator) ever since I had a dishwasher catch on fire just as I was getting ready to leave for work. I never thought a dishwasher could be a problem.

Thankfully blessings surrounded you in the potential fires! We aren't immune from life challenges but we are blessed often for them to be less. Pretty horses. 😊🐸💙😎

Yes. The lint is supposed to be removed after each load and that way it doesn't build up and you don't forget.

We are down to two horses on our farm. One is 30 years old and she will probably not make it through the winter. It breaks my heart we have had her since she was six. She’s been a good girl and I will miss her so much, she’s not the first one that’s retired on our farm, and she probably won’t be the last. It’s just heartbreaking to lose a trusted, loving animal.

Oh wow, about the dryer scare. My husband works for a utility company and in their safety meetings, dryers always come up. He has made me so meticulous about checking and cleaning the vent, like ALL the time!! I don’t remember the exact statistic, but the number of fires caused by dryer lint is so ridiculously high!

I feel like I’m on the same page with you. I just had my first house fire last month. Thankfully everything was mostly ok and no one was injured. There was more damage done by the fire department spraying water in the house. It is really scary when you see your house filling with smoke and you can’t do anything to stop it. I also burned one of the rows in my garden this year on a whim. I have always heard about the use of activated charcoal and ash in the garden and I’m a naturally curious person. It was also great to burn the weeds off; it was a rough weed year because I had a baby in May! I’m really curious to see if that row outperforms the other rows in my garden next year. So glad your house is ok! Praise God that Miah went inside when he did!

So glad Miah had to go in the house and you thought of checking the dryer. Good to have someone on high caring for you. The chickens will love the charred ground. I throw cooled ash and coals to my chickens and they will eat it right up. I think it works like a mineral supplement for them.

Jess my dryer has the lint collector just under the door inside and I clean it every time I am using it. Not sure what kind of dryer you have and the access to the lint collector but if I would clean mine every 6 month I would have a fire after 3 wash. I am so glad your house is safe. Please clean it after every cycle.
