An adrenaline-fueled war reporter, self-medicated with cocaine. The panic attack on live TV that brought him to meditation.
This is a RAW & REVEALING look into how Dan Harris (10% Happier author & podcaster) struggled behind his polished on-screen persona.
What's a better way to celebrate MBB's 200TH EPISODE?!!!
Dan reveals how his reporting from the frontlines of Iraq led to self-medicating his depression with recreational drugs, and how meditation was the ultimate game-changer.
THIS IS A CALL TO ACTION FOR ANYONE WHO THINKS THEY CAN'T MEDITATE!
Learn the practical skills to happiness, how to detach from your narrative through metacognition, and create a buffer between stimulus and reaction.
Mayim shares her personal struggles with meditation and gets practical tips from Dan that could change your perception of meditation forever. Plus, dive into different forms of meditation that enhance concentration, gratitude, and how a lovingkindness meditation practice can reshape your day-to-day life.
Dan also explains how meditation caused him to shift his perception of himself and in relation to others, what our goals with meditation should be, and what his lovingkindness meditation practice looks like today.
Curious about MDMA's therapeutic potential for emotional awareness, adrenaline addiction, or what a coke-fueled panic looks like from the inside? This episode is your front-row seat to a MIND-BLOWING conversation that could very well be the nudge you need to start your own meditation journey.
TUNE IN to help us celebrate 200 episodes of MBB with Dan Harris!

Mayim, you hit the nail on the head when you said, every time I meditate it feels like I am doing it for the first time. That is beautiful, because many masters say, meditate like it is your first time, every time you do it. You cannot fail!!! Keep doing it like it is your first time and be kind to your trying self.❤❤❤❤❤

As a veteran, transcendental meditation was a deal breaker for me….finally some inner peace! I so understand where he is coming from….the addiction afterwards….when we are at an age where we are supposed to have our shit together….that adds to it…..53 here….and finally getting it together…..been a long road….PTSD sucks…..✌🏽❤️🇨🇦

Mayim, I am a Jewish mom, age 62 residing in South Jersey. At this time in my life i have a lot of health issues and am on disability. I suffered from panick attacks many years ago. I have watched you grow up on tv. I love watching your podcast. I fully enjoy the interaction between you and Jonathan. I think you are a very cute couple. I have considered learning more about meditation but never did anything about it until now. I downloaded the audio book 10% Happier from the library. After listening to the book, i may download the app. I also found Dan's podcast and will listen to that as well. You and Jonathan are both younger than me, but i am learning so much from both of you! I just want to say thank you to both you and Jonathan for truly making our world a better place. ❤

@@MayimBialik I appreciate your podcast. I am new to it. I was stunned you interviewed Dave Richo and that you loved his work! I'm a "fan" of his books and teaching. He is compassionate. A new topic area for you to consider that is current now is relationship counseling for couples. Consider inviting Terry Real on the podcast. He and his wife Belinda are both psychotherapists. She uses a different last name. They have been married for about 50 years. He was raised as a secular Jewish boy in N.J. in the 1960's. I think you will like his "energy." Perhaps also consider the work of Joe DiSpenza for meditation. He has many teachings on-line.

I’ve had one & only panic attack in my life. Bc an architect here, I was at a building under construction at 86 feet hight. I don’t recommend it to my worst enemy.. Needing to address it asap, I received a misdiagnose of an “ignored” since then “fear to heights”..(Really? At my then almost 30 years of proffession?). To me it was an inner alarm of my brain advising me against my workalcoholic, anxious & stressed life. I abandoned immediately the prescribed citalopram dose & returned to ioga, meditation & breathing exercises. Panic attack, doing this daily since then, has never happened again & I swear you that I’ve been at same situations again quite frequently..

Thanks so much! So, I've had a daily practice for a couple of decades. I'd be hard pressed to explain how one might access this practice, but anyone can access this practice. No, this isn't easy for anyone. This is as hard as f!@#$%! If I had to sum it up, I'd say it's been 20+ years of getting the f out of the way...we're not "looking" for anything here. There's nowhere for the ego to get. I hope you find a way to access this practice and appreciate you bringing on Dan. Appreciate you!

I've known about Dan for years from his journalism, but I had no idea about his on-air panic attack or coke addiction. Shocking because he's such a clean cut, seemingly always together guy. We all have assumptions about wealthy celebrities' lives, and I think mostly associate recklessness with entertainers and athletes, not journalists. I so appreciate the transparency and nuggets about mindfulness and meditation in this conversation. Thank you! 🙏🏾

Success, for me, the writing of your thoughts, (like Dan did), is the most exciting and wonderful way to find peace and connection to the spiritual side of our lives in this universe. The writing distracts my mind from wandering without purpose. What I write always amazes me so I feel a connection to the divine. However we have to disciplined in just starting, and sometimes the writing starts out from your conscious mind and gradually changes to the wisdom of the ages. It's not about right or wrong. It's about trusting that there is a non-physical side of life where love, peace, contentment and wisdom reside.

Whoa. Epic and 🤯. Mayim, I require a genuine follow up to hear if you were able to incorporate Dan’s words into your meditation practice. And Dan was spot on when he made his last comment about your doing a public service with what you say (and should stop) is self-indulgent. I can say with certainty that speaking one’s truth allows others to exhale and feel safer in speaking their truth. At our age, WTF are we still hiding from?! Dan - thank you. ❤

The power of now also changed my life in helping me to be more present and aware. I read that 3 years ago. My meditation practice evolves as my life evolves. I am buying Dan's book. I am enrolled in the Jay Shetty Certification School and I'm excited to add this book as a resource when coaching clients. Sending love and light to you all.

I listened to this podcast and took Dan's words and tips about mindfulness and meditation, and somehow I found myself practising mindfulness as I ran. I haven't exercised in a long time because I had been in crisis and keep in mind that I've only very recently started to getting back to being active and trying to take control of my health and body after letting it go for so long. I've somehow, managed to keep myself motivated to do a 10km run, on a whim, despite being totally gassed out at the 6km mark and did that with a rather decent time for a novice my age group. And the amazing thing is that I've noticed that I am much more aware with the people around me and their need. And i think that is pretty dang cool. So, thank you! This helped me with taking another small, but important step in learning to love myself and towards recovery after a crisis. 😊

Omg this was sooo good, thank you guys! For me the pivotal moment when I started to meditate was when I heard a celebrity talk about his meditation practice. Mind you I was actively learning and wanting to meditate and wasn’t able to for years to do it everyday, or with the ease I needed, and not to be this struggle. It’s just bizarre how it clicks sometimes and makes mediation part of your life. The benefits are to say least, if anything happens bad, I don’t go crazy, or dwell on it, and make it worse. Thank you again and I’m so happy that more ppl are aware of this technique thanks to you guys!

I start hearing crickets when I meditate. It gets pretty loud sometimes. I could handle a panic attack if it wasn't for the suffocating feeling. I'm breathing but I feel completely smothered. That's the worst part of it for me. It's terrifying. Dan, I love how you are using curiosity to study the mind instead of trying to achieve some desire. That's very helpful to me.

As with many others, I found this podcast very engrossing and something I could connect with. I read Eckhart Tolle's Power of Now at least 10 years ago. The fact that the past and the future do not exist and we spend much energy on that kind of mental fiction made sense, but I did not have the tools to do much with that knowledge. Later I read the Cow In the Parking Lot as a way to try to deal with my personal anger issues. That was very much about using Buddhist concepts to deal with things that tended to enrage me (very much an ongoing work in progress). Later finding all kinds of information on Meditation, which I have been working with for the last few years, and all that jives with everything you guys have been discussing. Much like Mayim, I have not achieved that moment of mental detachment that you describe. But at least there are brief periods of time where I can quiet the voice in my head. I still need to work on meditating every day, but the last few years have at least felt like positive progress, enough so that it motivates me to keep at it.

love how carl jung's "meditation" (?) journeys (is that context still lock-and-keyed) in the red book (and his art) are- i know that in the footnotes it mentions he dealt with a lot of people whose imaginations certainly were lock-and-keyed and that he himself had to work himself out of blanking them off and he does poetically paint that as a bit of a monstrous dialogue-natured process?? so beautiful to get to read it in the original, i don't think i'm aware of a lot of the references he wrote it around but it unfolds very distinctly and grabs a hold of my imaginal interworkings (huh meant innerworkings but hey)! he seems to show he understood what he was illustrating, atleast to my mind but he didn't exactly seem sober to me. maybe that's what it him took to dislodge what holds true even in sobriety about the odder inner-mind though. something makes me scrunch my eyebrows at this usage of "desire" 🤔 okay dschinn's go on the creature feature case of the week list

I really enjoyed this presentation. I found mantra meditation a little over 20 years ago and it has blessed my life immensely. I would choose a mantra to help build my self esteem and focus on the mantra and my breath for 45 minutes 5 days a week. Would change the mantra every week by analyzing my negative thoughts and coming up with a mantra to counter the negative thought. This did wonders for my self esteem, especially after doing this for a year and a half (very motivated to improve my self esteem). Hope Mayim utilizes the mantra meditation Dan taught her and hope this benefits her as much as mantra meditation has benefited me.

I've only been *trying* to practice mindfulness meditation for about a year and a half, now, so I can't begin to speak with authority on the matter. But, in my limited experience, I'd describe the "growth" that Mayim is asking about at 1:10:15 is something like this: The unmindful mind is like an extremely cluttered living space where there are piles and scattered objects blotting out furniture, walkways, and doorways. Each time you practice mindfulness meditation, you are slowly clearing out one room in this living space. Each time your return for practice, you might have to clear another object out of that space that has reappeared, but each time you return for practice, it's definitely clearer than when you first entered. And gradually, this room becomes a very special place in your consciousness that you can choose to go throughout your day -- a space within your living space -- where you can see things from an honest, non-judgmental, unhurried perspective.

Ok I went back specifically to find this episode, if it still applies, but Mayim talks about her difficulty with meditation & I know a lot of people can relate so today I watched a video on KZbin that made me think this might help with the meditation issue -the interview is Brian Scott who I love & he’s interviewing R.J.Spina who healed himself from being paralyzed from the chest down & other life threatening illnesses he had going on all at once in like 100 days but anyway the interview had so much helpful info on meditation as well as lots if other awesome subjects it may be helpful to some

Mayim, when Dan said that being less self-centered would lead you to being more available for other people, I kinda thought - no. I mean, for you in particular. You are a woman, with our estrogen, always putting us out for other people. Especially as a HSP. I thought (and of course, this is just my humble opinion), you should use the extra space brought on by meditation, to build your relationship with nature and her version of quiet, and replenish your own heart. You have a busy verbal brain, with which you have given many gifts, and the presence of others is maybe just going to get that brain going again. I also wanted to tell you about something I have been doing recently, when old painful memories surface and trouble me: I say, this is just a memory. I don't need to relive the shame (usually) it brings up. It's just a memory. It makes it easier for me. With thanks for all you do.

I don't know if I'm doing this right... but because I am in insomniac and have been since I was a kid my mom taught me to find a way to clear my mind... I envision a blackboard with all my 'stuff' written down in chalk... I run through my list of the day in point form I.e. •got up the stupid coffee maker didn't start-annoyed, •readjusted my mental schedule, started coffee, had shower while it brewed instead Something stupid like that, state the 'thing' how it made me feel but not dwell on the emotion but instead as a fact. Once I state it I mentally envision wiping it off the board... when I reach the end I've cleared off the whole board and just have a big black space with nothing to think about... and I zoom in on that blackness or nothingness so there's no space left inside my brain for other thoughts, then I start focusing on how my body feels starting at my feet and slowly work up my body relaxing and putting each to sleep... and in 30ish years I've never gotten past my knees before I'm sound asleep.

If you meditate long enough, meaning over time, you can reach a point where the mind does start to still during meditation. Even long before enlightenment is reached at the moment of ego death, you can reach various points such that your mind stops being like a hamster wheel gone amok. You can reach a point where you can go for longer and longer periods of time without an unwanted thought. Life feels very different once you commit to such a path.

Mayim, when you said that you feel as if you're reaching I perceived that you may be trying too hard. Jon Kabat-Zinn says every meditation is a new beginning. What I call the Silence finds me. I don't find it. And it's been a really long time since it found me.;

Meditation, for me, leads to insomnia. Insomnia is not good for physical or mental health, so I had to (reluctantly) give up meditation. I am not the only person who has a negative outcome from meditation. This should be known by anyone attempting meditation. It is not a perfect solution for everyone, even if it is often presented as such.

Contemplation. Richard Rohr is one example of a teacher who has been around for a long time. The method goes deeper than meditation. He is a Franciscan priest, however, his teaching is "accessible" to the spirituality of people of various religious beliefs and "traditions." It is "universal" but God focused (rather than an anonymous "universe.") Contemporary meditation teachers I recommend are Thomas Hubl, Alex Howard. Craig Hamilton. Jeffrey Allen. Dr. Rick Hanson and his son Forrest Hanson are good for thoughtful family and relationship counseling. They take this to a deeper level of understanding for all people to benefit from.

The greatest part of meditation is that it's impossible to do it incorrectly and it's also impossible to ascertain if you have any results. The idea is to clear you mind of all other ideas: in other words: stop thinking. It's encouraging you to be stupid as a cure. What a load.
