This is a good idea. This year was my first time gardening. The time spent learning, discovering, working, nurturing, protecting, and harvesting my(our) plants has saved me from insanity as I began sobering-up from alcohol abuse and the pain of PTSD. The joy of gardening has reminded me that life itself can be exciting! And, like gardening, I get out of it what I put into it. In spite of weeds and pests and diseases, life goes on and the beauty comes back.

Gardening is a wonderful coping skill that doubles as a way of providing which provides another sense of security for me. I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed gardening. I didn't get the same joy from flowers though, but I enjoy the flowers on my veggie plants.

Great video. I have one eggplant since the spring but the flowers are not turning into fruit. 😢 I have about 3, 5 flowers everytime but they all die. I hand pollinated and feed every month with a 5-5-5 fertilizer, what else can I do to have the flowers turning into fruit? Thanks in advance.

Natalia Silvestre Hi California here, in full sun and heat there csn be flowers but no pollen, just too hot. I have discovered a sneaky way that has worked for me...I have 5 of them in seperate large pots, that i started with some compost mixed in the potsoil. They get morning sun, then some shading from tall trees until noon and shady break then sunlight but not direct hot heated sun... They are surrounded by other plants and flowers, one is planted with mint, other on has green onions and arugula in same soil, so they have friends. Watered twice a day and I use some epsom salt, organic fertilizer periodically... have non stop fruits and flowers. Hope this helps, all the best.

I have had good results with Ichiban variety this year, produced about 13 thus far. However, I am only able to harvest 2-3 each time. What should I do so I can harvest less frequently, but with more eggplants per harvest?

Thank you for the VDO. I do not get it. I read all the time that eggplants love heat. As do tomatoes. Well, where I live their heat cup runneth over! This summer, the 24 hour temp has been over 30C (we do not cool off at night in summer. due to high humidty, the temp is more or less constant) and some days pushing 36C! I have no idea of the humidity in your area (the katydids signal that it gets KC humid 40 to 50%) ours is 65% or above. Daily. From June, my eggplants were flowering, but would never set. I fed it this pellet fertilizer and later a liquid food (all the instructions were in chinese. i did what i could. between google translate and reading numbers). Flower, no set. I would do what I could to manually pollinate the plant. No dice. Ever time it would drop its flowers. Eventually it stopped flowering and later died. My tom plants eventually died as well. I have no idea what happened. Too much heat, I am guessing. One thing. I noticed on a DIY tomato farm that their "season" for the DIY part is from October to May. I had no idea as to why, but I am guessing that since June to Sept is generally hot^2 in Taiwan, that is why I did not get any fruit. I am going to try again since the nights are backing off into the high 20s. (yes, it is C)

Thank you for this informative video, fun to have the recipe demo from Stacy. Just one thing about the Ichiban Eggplant (which I am also growing and eating!) - it is correctly pronounced " ē-chē-bän" like "yee CHEE bahn" not "ickiban" - meaning "No. 1" or "the best", In Asia we often braise with lots of garlic and a little vinegar, a traditional recipe. Thanks again!

Need some help please! In lite of pandemic I finally decided to grow my own garden. Problem that I have is my potting soil that I mixed 1:1/4 of potting soil to peat moss won’t drain, it’s taking like 30+ minutes to get pool of water on top of soil to drain down. What can I do? Transferring eggplant into that soil container. Thanks for your help, and all that you do! 🤙

Add perlite. I make my own potting mix - equal parts of compost, coco coir (or peat moss if you need a more acidic soil) and perlite. Coarse sand is okay as a substitute for perlite but from experience, I find perlite better.

My eggplants were terrible this year. Some really small bug totally infested my plants The bugs were on the underside of the leaves. Flea beetles got them too. I used DTE for the flea beetles, it didn't seem to work. Those things got my other plants too. Are they in the soil or something? They got my cucumbers, cantaloupe, peppers. How do you get rid of those things? I will try this next year.

Why are you watering the leaves with your fertilizer liquid??? I thought it promotes mold and fungus growth??? Please explain. Where are you? Are you in a dry environment? That would explain watering the leaves. Love you're explanation of harvesting and fertilizing!!! Olso like the cooking part!!! Wonderful!!! Your fertilizing tips👍 If anyone has too many fish or spoiled fish, fry or barbecue them to black choles. Plants grow like crazy with this. The Indians would place Fish in the ground when planting corn and other crop. Fish were so abundant there. Fish are far better and safer than mammal meat burnt. Plants love carbon!!!

My black beauty eggplants are about 6 months old from seeds to now. They are only 7-9 inches tall but are flowering already. I want them to be bushy and big. How long did you wait till your eggplants start producing flowers and fruits?? I feel that 7-9inches tall is too small for them to support fruits.

eggplants are not exclusively from asia originally, but from africa, india and asia. the original plant is a desert plant that is called solanum incanum. this plant is a perennial, woody scrub tree and grows almost exclusively in dry, poor, sandy soil in full sun in VERY hot areas. Making a highly loamy soil (peat and compost) is kind of a violation of it's biology and could lead to root rot or nematode issues. The secret to getting nematodes out of the root system is adding CHITIN. nematodes will flock to it, eat it, and die. if you live near a beach, you could collect crab shells for their chitin, and simply add these to the pot crushed or whole. while you are there, grab some sand, because sand mineralizes the soil, adds drainage, and is what these plants biologically prefer in the wild. Believe me, if they wanted rich loam, then they would be growing in the rainforests of the tropics. Well, they arent. They also are not growing at high elevations either. Nope, lowland hot sandy dusty plains. There you go emulate their natural genetic origin's habitat and you will be able to more than succeed with this small tree. BTW, why grow them as an annual to get a pathetic harvest (one black beauty or a few small puny ones is like months of setup and work for a very low return unless you are doing experiments) when they will overwinter and get much bigger and start producing for real on year 2 or 3. I know I am breaking paradigms but I am not a bonnie plant salesperson and I stand for elucidation to growers as a long term propagator of bio mat. The devil is in the details, and in this case, it is in the Solanacae "Sodom Apple." Good luck and overwinter all great eggplant and peppers (you wouldnt believe what a pepper will do year 2; year 1 is a laughing joke in comparison).
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 7 жыл бұрын
You need a place to over winter them. I would need 4 months.
@GerardGibney3
@GerardGibney3 7 жыл бұрын
Good point. Well, many do all kinds of houseplants but would never consider bringing a pepper in. Eggplants are pretty ornamental; the flowers are stunning and the leaves are very handsome. It is up to the grower I guess if they are more utilitarian it wouldn't serve you but maybe as a re-purposed plant grown like a tropical tree (like a soursop tree or carambola indoors winter/outdoors summer when hot). I'm in zone 7 as well and brought a pile of them in last winter and they fruited the whole time (the experiment was a failure though since I never took care of them at the end of the winter and killed them off after a successful overwinter; massively stupid). Maybe choose your fav to eat and if you have room in an area with a south window choose a pot that is attractive and keep one bush as a small tropical fruit tree for duel ornamental and utilitarian purposes. Great video btw.

Id love to do that for peppers and eggplant. If I ever move and can build a greenhouse or tunnel. That would be my plan. Did you have insect issues bringing them in?
@GerardGibney3
@GerardGibney3 7 жыл бұрын
Mild aphid accumulation but only when dehydrated. I've noticed aphids usually go after dehydrated plants. Prob got smacked by nematodes and verticillium at the root level when I allowed conditions to deteriorate significantly through negligence. I use soil from outside; never sterile. Going to try to combat the aphids with proper attention to moisture and the nematodes through crab shell chitin (earlier info was partially inaccurate; the chitin encourages growth of chitin loving fungi and they then kill the nematodes, which are rich in chitin, after maybe depleting the original food source or during), as well as maintaining optimal health for preventing any verticillium. I had these babies fruiting at 50 F with a super low UV index in pots as small as a half gallon. Ukrainian beauty was very hardy, compared to black beauty and a few hybrids of purple and mauve italian varieties and listada di gandia. I've found a lot of ukrainian or russian varieties to be uber hardy across the board but am now playing around with some Iraqi genetics from baker creek. Supposedly the "Aswad" is absolutely phenomenal according to Jere Gettle. Their Iraqi determinate tomato "Ninevah" is absolutely stellar as well; so good my honest parents robbed me of an entire stash last summer. Good stuff man and good luck with the greenhouse and poly tunnel, both GREAT ideas. Oh peppers will fruit in miniscule pots, especially hot peppers, it just will clearly limit yield, but when you only need a few for the kitchen, it does work. Food for thought.

TheVoiceofReason 1 Noooo, don'say aphid...It might be contagious. Lordy, my squash suffered for several weeks even with spraying... thousand, kill mist 3 days later more. Blame it on the ants. Interestingly enough, when there is an abundance of Nitrogen in soil, the ants bring up the aphid eggs and put them on leaves for food, as the ants can be seen running around, drinking the aphid waste that is apparently sweet. Just when I was beside myself and just done, lady bugs and lacewings showed up. There really were several hundreds blamketing each huge zucchini leaf, ALL gone and now getting veggies and melons and hubbard squash production.

That's an excellent video Gary. It's been difficult to grow eggplants here in zone 4 but I have found a few gardeners successfully grown them (ichiban in particular) a few did through a speciality grower who grafts them on another rootstock. Our problem is longer days and colder night. I have a container eggplant with one flower in bloom, I don't see a fruit forming very soon but good thing is that I can move it inside before first frost (around September 20th)
