Hi Scott...just fiound your channel 2 days ago and oh my...I've got a lot to learn about growing plants in pots! Most in 5gal buckets I'm in NC about 35miles north of Charlotte and I have a million questions but will ask you only 1 for now. I bought a bag of cedar mulch because the lady that helped me said it helps to keep insects away. I'm in my 73 yr and the first time trying to grow some things I like. Your videos are a God send...thank you!!! Rose in NC

Cedar can be good mulch. Some swear by it. It does repel certain pests which is why we store valuables in a cedar chest. Welcome and best wishes.

Try drilling the holes about 2-3” above on the side instead of the very bottom! It will hold that much more water, so the plant roots can pull it up later

Any time. What you want to avoid is letting them go too long. Once they are up to size, the skin should have a nice glossiness to it. If it starts getting dull, it means it is forming larger hard seeds and is past its prime.

The mulch is black because of dyes added by the manufacturer. I wouldn’t advise topping off with mulch because that dye is leaching down and possibly absorbed by the plant and into the eggplant itself.
@ScottHead4 жыл бұрын
This is "Natural Earth All Natural Hardwood Mulch" which has no dye. It is blackish because it has been sitting in the back composting for over a year. In other videos,you can see this mulch,when freshly purchased, it naturally coloredwithnodye as listed on the bag. Good advice to use no dyes.

Hey Scott, got another question for you and thanks in advance for your advice. This is my attempt at gardening of any sort and I'm going the container route. I have a 'patio eggplant' (baby eggplant) I picked up from walmart. It has some purple flowers that look a little tired, and 4 GIANT leaves near the lower half of the stalk. I was reading that it might be a good idea to pinch away some of those purple flowers to encourage more growth. What do you think? And as for the four large leaves -- they are all a little worn looking, slightly brown. There is a fair amount of new growth at the top of the plant. Should I remove those four large leaves? Are they just sucking away energy that the plant could better use for other purposes, or are those leaves the very thing that is driving the current growth? Sorry for the wall of text. It's such a new world to me and it's all exciting and a little scary. I've been using videos like yours as gospel. Thank you!!
@ScottHead5 жыл бұрын
If you want the plant to become more stablished and bulked up before trying to set fruit, then pinch those flowers, at least some of them. If the leaves that are large still look viable, leave them on a day by day basis. When they start getting yellow or brown on the edges, then yeas, strip them out. You might want to give you plant a quick boost of fish emulsion and a dilute dose of epsom salt to get it hyped up and growing. Once it is established, then let it fruit. Now, all that is if it is a continually growing plant. Its a nightshade like tomatoes, so being a "patio" variety might mean its a determinate-like plant, a dwarf, and may not put on many more flowers. Research your variety and see if you actually should pinch those buds. I'm not up on eggplant much, but they are very similar to tomatoes so it would be wise to search out more info on your variety.

@@ScottHead thanks for understanding. I ask, because container gardening can be costly, especially if you just up and buy all the myriad items to make it work. Question, the bucket I plan on using does not have holes in the bottom. Should I still few holes to help water drain?
@ScottHead4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need drainage for sure.

@@ScottHead cool, how well did your plant do? My plan is to use a regular 20 gallon storage container from Walmart and drill holes in them but not sure if I should place two or three plants in one container
@ScottHead4 жыл бұрын
I'd drill about a dozen, you want a options if one or two get clogged. My plants did well and gave me some fruit, though in-ground eggplants seem to do better in the long run. I grew eggplant one year in 5 gallon bucket, again drilled holes, and they fruited well into the summer with careful water management and fertilizer.

@@ScottHead I see, my problem is here down in South Florida our soil is horrible and nothing will grow in there. I may consider a raise bed like yours

You should go look at David The Good, his channel's older videos were all about North Florida gardening, but might be the same challenges - sandy soil. He is about to publish his Florida Gardening book too. Maybe some good advice. He now lives in the tropics so his earlier videos would be best.
