I had a similar situation on starting bass. A friend of mine told me one day, "You should play bass. No one wants to play bass." So I did, back in 1992. Thanks Brian!

I really like how you can hear the Bass and how much of a protagonist is in Anthrax's music. Those Bass riffs are iconic.

I'm really amazed by that interview and how much you could bring from Frankie. Only a person that knows Anthrax and Frankie in detail can do something like this and believe me, I have watched and read tons of Frankie's interviews since I'm a kid and this is the most detailed and fun to watch. Awesome job!! I took a lot to watch because I wanted to pay attention carefully at all the details. And props for you to get that amazing information from Frankie on his ATL sound. I always knew that something was missing from his tone equation. Great job!!!!!!!!

I’ll be upfront and say I’ve not listened to Anthrax. This was a great conversation between 2 musicians who play bass and love the whole music making process. The passion comes through. I’m going to have to listen again to get the names of songs and people to give a listen. It’s good to see you doing well so you can perform and put this video together.

Hey Rodney, hope you're doing well man! Popping in to say I've learned more from your channel over the past couple years than any other source on KZbin. It's because of your video that I don't use tabs anymore. Now I learn almost always by ear. I can now read sheet music and am slowly learning to sight read. I couldn't do that a year ago. One of the most important lessons about musicianship I've learned from you throughout your videos is to be self-reliant. To take the time to cultivate the skills to be self-reliant; as aposed to looking for a quick fix or a special gadget that will create that special sound. What I learned from you is to train my ear and learn to create what I want with what I currently have. Thank you for the excellent videos Rodney! You've been a great teacher to me. Cheers! :)

I have basses that I have customized, modified, whatever you want to call it, that I love more than my Modulus.( don't tell it I said that) For me it is the fact that I help create these basses that make this sound. And out of all the basses I have, the 3 I customized, are the ones I get the most praise on the sound they make.

Is the Japanese term that you're looking for Wabi-Sabi? I remember listening to a David Lee Roth interview where he defined that term as "something that is perfect because it's a little fucked up", Comparing it to that old pair of jeans or the comfortable pair of shoes. PS, great interview.

Hi Rodney. Not really about this video, but you have motivated me, beginner bassist , to start learing songs by ear. So how would you approach a song that has no official bass playthrough, no isolated track and bass isnt really audible? Your content is really helpfull to me, thank you
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 6 ай бұрын
Glad I could help. And yeah, that's a tough situation. You have to go with best guess to a certain degree. What i would do is eq the song to take out a lot of treble and listen to where i hear bass really emphasized in the sound. Then go with what sounds like the most likely choice in that case - following the guitar, a steady single note groove, etc. Bad mixes and unhearable parts have been a curse on bassists for ages. Best of luck.

@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 2 ай бұрын
If it were just to talk music I don't know that I would charge like that. Maybe something like a livestream would be a place where a lot of questions on various topics and bands could be answered. Otherwise I would feel better about wrapping the conversation into some kind of structured lesson about composition, etc, so I could feel like you got something of value that you could apply to your pursuits.

@@RodneyMcG ok man i got you i was just curious cuz there's this other youtuber who's a reptile keeper and he does weekly zoom calls with his pateons who have a cam (which im not one). From what ive heard it pretty chill but once a week seems like too much. I just wanted to throw out some ideas it would be cool to hang out with you and some of the patreons like stephan becker in a zoom call but yeah i get it if its not informative and constructive then its a waste.
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 2 ай бұрын
I think that's actually a great idea. I'm gonna put it down in my book to look at doing after I get a number of projects that I'm trying to push through right now completed. There are a number of videos I've thought about doing but just didn't seem like they would be click worthy since it's just me talking a bit about music, favorite band's, and ideas about metal and its different genre's. A live get together where everybody could interact seems like the right place for it. Thanks for the input, great idea.
