George taking the time at the start to talk about the other author speaks volumes about his character.

Broke my heart a bit to see George wrestle with the fact he's now created this incredible and expansive universe in his later life that he now will likely not have enough time to explore and flesh out as he would like. We all wish he was able to do this as it would be a marvel to experience, he is a true literary genius. Despite the pressure he's under I hope he rests easy in the fact that his work and contributions will stand the test of time. In my opinion he is the greatest fantasy writer since Tolkien.

The problem with the show was never the ending it was how they got there. They deviated so much from the source material over the years that that the ending felt incredibly awkward and rushed. I'm pretty certain Daenerys becoming mad and Jon killing her was always the ending planned by GRRM, the difference is that he did all the groundwork throughout thousands of pages to eventually get there. Now i have feeling the negative reactions from the public made GRRM changed his plan about the last books and that's why it's taking him so long.

Poor guys stressed the hell out 😭 this series reached heights he probably couldn't have even imagined and it's just continued to get BIGGER. There's a lot of pressure to continue this "perfect" story and give people their "perfect" ending. This is like arguably this thickest part of the story too with everyone's arcs coming together and the white walkers at their most dangerous. There's SO much to do, and yes granted if this was Stephen King he would've pumped some coke and had this series done and put away 10 years after starting it. But he's not Stephen King, he's a mastermind in his own right and I just hope and pray he is satisfied enough with his work to release it one day. As everyone else I am big fan of GRRM but somehow never watched or listened to much of his interviews, maybe few short ones here and there at best. This is the longest interview I watched him do. And it taught me two things. - GRRM is not only a great writer (a legend ) he is also a hug fan of great writing. to some this is like duh so obvious (and I agree) but while watching this interview this thought hit me. and that take me to the second thing. - From my observation I guess for GRRM its not about finishing this or that book doing this show or that, not even about his legacy as an author. Its about the the story itself. HE really care about those stories and want to be fair to them and give "them" his best. He already cemented a hall of fame status for himself, so he can half-ass it, half-assing it for him would be better than some peoples greatest works. But he could and just take the check. But no, he cares too much its not about what we would think of this story at the end. He cares about what HE would think. I gained more respect for this man may he live long and healthy. If I hear anyone talk about how lazy or slow or this and that I would ... I would .... do nothing who cares about what they think. Just like you don't tell a man how he lives his life you don't tell him how he write his story especially when both overlap this much ... I would rather never see the ending of SOIF (because it would still be one of the greatest stories ever told, its a whole world in fact) I would rather that then read something he doesn't approve.

I was thinking the same way about George up-to-and-including slightly arfter the release of A Dance with Dragons back in 2011. However, now that a decade has passed and I've wisened up, I've changed my opinion: Now I see him as someone who has ALWAYS focused his writing career towards the achievement of only ONE goal: Fame and Fortune. After Game of Thrones (the show) started getting big, it could immediately be seen that GRRM was now slowly undertaking a role other than that of a writer: A star. That's what he is now, and what he'd always strived to become. At this stage, I've become so jaded with the entire ASOIAF affair (and I was there with the fandom WAY BEFORE there was even AN IDEA for a TV show), that I honestly probably won't even bother to purchase The Winds of Winter once it... *IF* it *EVER* comes out. To me, things have reached a point where, *THE* *ONLY* *WAY* this man can redeem himself in the eyes of his oldest and most hardcore fanbase, is if he suddenly came up with something like: "trololol! I was trolling you all all along with how *"slow"* I really was with the writing of the Sixth book !!! So here's the last two books released TOGETHER AT ONCE. !!" Yes, really. I honestly feel like this is the only thing that can make it feel like it was worth it to stick along with this entire thing -- just release the final two books at once, together.

The man is a visionary. As ascribed to him, by many, he is a modern day Tolkien. The knowledge and tact he possesses is immeasurable. To write so many stories centered around a lore and canon he has spent a lifetime designing. His works will stand the test of time. To give faith to the religion of human expansion he prescribes; years and years from now, when man has reached beyond the stars and explored the cosmos, people will still muse of the old tales that inspired them. The legends of Arthur, the journey of Frodo, the exploration of James T. Kirk, and the Dance of Dragons. Stories live forever, as will the memory and life of George RR Martin.

Talking about landscapes, one of the most famous uses of landscape in battle was The Battle of Thermopylae where they used the narrow pass of the mountain to their advntage against the large number of Persian soldiers versus the 300 or so Spartan Warriors (I believe they also built a wall to help them fight 10 at a time instead of a huge wave all at once).

I really enjoyed this interview. I am excited about WoW. I'm hoping we'll be able to read it in the next two (maybe four) years. I would also be extremely interested in hearing George's thoughts on the upcoming Jon Snow series. Is this HBOs apology, per se, for bungling up the last two seasons of GOT? Also, I'd love to hear George's opinion of the fan fiction that has been written about his world. I've been listening to An Empire of Ice and Fire, an alternate telling of ASOIF. It's fascinating the way the author completely turned the story around, yet kept many of the same elements of the original story. Aside from the plethora of "I love you" dialog between Jon and Dany, I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Still waiting for the final chapters to be read, but it tells a much happier(positive?) relationship that develops between Jon and Dany. The author is by no means anywhere near the genius of GRRM, yet compelling and enjoyable, nonetheless.

Lmao that is pretty dumb, the show left out so much out of the existing books that 3 more sets of 8 season shows can be made out of it. There is no way they could ever be the same in any meaningful way. Not to mention from 2015-2018 he did like zero writing on Winds due to finishing F&B. And probably even less between 2011-2015 cuz he became a super star cuz of the show and got to go and do everything he wanted.
