GRR Martin is such a good talker... but after you watch a few interviews each time he gets 90% the same questions and tells the same answers/stories, I remember most of them by heart. The second-hand heads, watching the new york bay as a kid, breaking the rule of no similar names, remembering colours of eyes and horses' sex, all of it I've heard 10 times before. But still I watch, for that tiny little bit of new.

Tbf, this is just part of life as a writer. Most audiences want to ask the same questions because a lot of people are seeing the answers for the first time. So you've always got to be giving those answers over and over, and it's not like they're suddenly going to change. You just might refine the answer over time as you get used to telling it. I've even seen some writers begin events by addressing the most commonly asked questions they get - sort of a "please don't ask this, here's the basics" kind of thing.

Reply to a year old comment... after seeing the reaction to The Last Dance, a pseudo documentary about the last championship year of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, I can see this happening. Two years after George R.R. Martin's death, a manuscript 75% completed with virtually no notes to help guide any hopeful author in finishing his work, there is a team of Westoros semi-nerds who go around and interview the actors, producors, family, friends and George's widow on "what really happened" behind the scenes and why these books took so long to write and publish. Cutaways to the television series with interludes of music, but also showing snapshots of people you've never seen who's helped Martin create a plethora of calendars and coffee table art books, while explaining how Martin changed from an author of books to a celebrity author once HBO delivered a dump truck full of money to his door step. Then, the detailed nuances of what goes into writing a novel followed by what goes into writing a novel of his level of complexity is brought into comparison with his hero, Tolkien and shows the similarities and differences of writing in this style with other real world distractions. But after the producers realize that they don't have a lot of dramatic material to work with, they try to leverage minor real world interactions into full blown controversies. George: "Dragonstone was not how I had imagined it when I was writing the books..." (edit before he could finish his thought) Producer: "George thought that Dragonstone did not interpret, what he saw, when he was writing the books, very accurately." Widow: George and D&D had very different views on how Dragonstone should look...." (edit before she finishes her sentence). This then ties in to how the television series differed from the source material and lead to the disastrous final season before the producers went on to work on the most maligned Star Wars movie of the time. Then it shows how Martin was offered to be flown to New Zealand, for free, to finish his novel, which he humbly declines, but then dies of (*insert the most popular death idea of the year here*) before being able to finalize his novel. Instant Classic.

@@Piecrab It isn't easy, I understand that, and as his story has got much more convoluted as he has made more and more story lines complex it has almost got to the stage where it is becoming so difficult to finish in a way that he is happy with. He will need to take breaks from it, and the new books i think he is putting out so that he keeps his name relevant and his publishers happy, but this has been going on a ridiculously long time and I'm wondering if he sees as having an unfinished set of novels as actually making him more famous and that we may only see a conclusion to his books after his death and someone publishes the final books from a collection of his writings, much like is happening with Tolkien at the moment, as sad as that sounds. I have also thought that he's waiting for Game of Thrones to finish before he publishes as it is likely that his books will follow a very different path, even if they end up vaguely in the same place.

Brynden Rivers Yeah, I also felt like I was the on of the few who loves this book. I think the Brienne as well as the Jamie chapters have a great hedge knight vibe. And watching Cersei turning mad is so disturbing and entertaining at the same time! The speech about the broken man, Euron Greyjoy etc... Only the prologue is kind of bulky. But it has the terrible strong cider in it, which is such a genius detail! And seeing Dorne for the first time reminds me of my time at the Alhambra. Greetings from Germany ;-) Leif

Lore & mythology is just that-a story can be told down the line of ten people-one by one-& the first version can be nothing like the last. What if GRRM has Stannis become the Night's King? Remember he writes overreaching story arcs that weren't meant to be able to put to screen. Enjoy that we are getting something now!

Wow, there were no awkward moments where the interviewer was bullshitting knowledge or huge lulls in the conversation. This was a genuinely listenable interview, well done.

Thank you Eric for your statement. I agree that the toxic energy in the so called fandom is all too common. How can we expect him to write with all that added pressure. I’m no writer but I imagined that undo stress must cause writers block. Keep writing George! Word by word we will get a wonderful book. I have been listening to Fire and Blood and I enjoy histories of the Targaryen Dynasty. Thank you

Vice TOLUCT Yes it is cyber bullying and unfair to the author. There are many celebrities and artist that endure this behavior
@MadamCharChar
@MadamCharChar 5 жыл бұрын
Vice TOLUCT Dude, I understood your joke. You think you are clever, I get that, but GRRM has to put up with social media and so called fans that are pressuring him to put out a book that he probably is obligated to NOT finished due to a contractural agreement with HBO. He isn’t allowed to participate in any other screenplays or filming of any other projects due to his contract. This is fact. He spoke about it in an interview about Nightflyers on SyFy. So no, your comment didn’t go over my head, to nag this incredible man and make life miserable for him is bullying

The fact that at the end of that super obscure and specific question about the elephant, George literally had an answer that tied into the larger story is just astounding

I agree wholeheartedly with the final non-question. Everything George R.R. Martin gives us is a fantastic, irreplaceable gift and I am very grateful. Please know the lovers far outweigh those who don't wait gracefully. George you are an absolute genius. Your books and the pleasure of seeing your work brought to life with Game of Thrones have greatly enriched my life, for I am a person with an insatiable mind that you somehow satiate. We 🎶love you more than words can tell🎶.

In the beginning, the host asked GEORGE RR MARTIN, what happened to the elephant? Well, basically it IS mentioned in the book that it was returned to the Sealord of Braavos to maintain peace. Poor George also made a mistake since he said the dragons are the elephant, but dragons (at least the big ones) had died by that time so both the question and the answer were wrong.
