Mirror's Edge is arguably one of the most unique games I have played in a while. With smooth movement, memorable levels, and a different concept, it surprises me that the series never took off. So let's take a look at Mirror's Edge.

As I’m sure a lot of you know. I love movement. I’ve always been a bit of a sucker for movement based video games and that’s why you’ll notice that a lot of the glowing reviews I give on this channel, which, let’s be real, almost all of them are glowing, are on games that have movement as a core feature. All the assassin’s creed games that have their parkour systems, barring the newer ones, the insomniac spider-man games have the swinging which are a dream come true, and the infamous games have some of the most unique traversal abilities I’ve ever seen. Hell, even games like Solar Ash that are not even out yet are on my pre order list purely because they explicitly stated within their breakdown during the state of play that “Solar Ash is a movement based game”. Bottom line what I’m trying to say here is that if you want me to pitch a tent, show me some deep and buttery smooth traversal.
Now most of the games that I mentioned above all have a thing in common. Traversal and movement is not the core gameplay mechanic. In Spider-man and infamous the combat was center stage and for Assassin’s Creed the same is true for stealth. Solar Ash isn’t out yet so I can’t quite comment on it but the point is, I have yet to cover a game where movement is what the entire game is built around, and that’s where we get to Mirrors Edge.
For some context I played Mirror's Edge originally on the Xbox in early 2011 or so meaning I was 10 years old. It was one of the first games I had ever begged my parents to purchase off of the xbox live marketplace and it was a game I fell in love with from essentially the first time I laid eyes on it. The idea of a first person parkour based game had me borderline frothing at the mouth and it was a game I returned to quite frequently. As the years have gone by however I had forgotten about the game. That was until I saw Mirror's Edge Catalyst on sale. Because of that I decided to buy the first game and really sink my teeth into that before I jumped into Catalyst and now, here we are.
One thing we need to talk about before anything else when it comes to Mirrors Edge is the type of game it is. I believe that Mirrors Edge is more akin to a racing game than anything else. It was released in 2008 and while there were some games like Assassin’s Creed that had an open world with deep parkour mechanics, a first person parkour game like this was quite new and in order to focus on what was center stage, being the mechanics, the game opted for 8 tight knit levels with replayability rather than an open world.
Mirrors Edge is in almost every way designed to be replayed and remastered time and time again. With a loose story, and little to keep you engaged outside of it’s core gameplay it still surprises me how replayable this game is and how enjoyable it still is to this day.
mirror's edge is a game all about speed. I plan to also cover mirror's edge catalyst and compare it to the original mirrors edge. while catalyst, or more often referred to as mirror's edge 2 is controversial, I plan to talk about it primarily in my upcoming mirror's edge catalyst critique, not this critique. mirror's edge gameplay is primitive compared to mirrors edge catalyst and while mirror's edge (video game) isn't the best, It is still quite good. it also has nothing to do with actual mirror's. I highly recommend that you watch some mirror's edge speedrun, as they showcase the peak of the free running in this mirror's edge critique. While I hope we get a mirror's edge 3, I doubt we will see the series up and running again. mirror's edge catalyst gameplay is mentioned here in this mirror's edge review but it is not center stage and will be again saved for the mirror's edge catalyst review. mirror's edge faith and the history of mirrors edge was mostly left out of this review because I had little to say on it. mirrors edge catalyst and mirrors edge™ are very similar yet very different games though I do prefer catalyst. stay tuned for the mirror’s edge catalyst critique!

"I just found the city looking more like an obstacle course than an actual city" I think it's beautiful that you think that since I'd imagine that's how parkour and freerunning experts see cities, too: just endless opportunities to run along surfaces and traverse the city like its their playground.

You actually can take out the free running enemies with melee attacks. It's super hard, but not impossible. It's all about learn their attack animations and then keeping your distance until there's a moment where you know they'll be vulnerable. For instance, when they begin to jump up for a round-house kick you can slide kick them to do some damage. It'll take a few attempts for sure, the only reason worth doing it in my opinion is get fight them when they're first introduced, because their training ground is really fun to mess around it. It's the one sort of "playground" type area in the game, and running around practicing your skills in the area feels like a great reward for taking out some really tough enemies with nothing but your fists.

I feel like there was a brief window of time where we had triple A games like Mirror's Edge and Portal that weren't reliant on violence as a focus of the mechanics but instead on movement and traversal ideas. Don't get me wrong - I'm not Jack Thompson and I have played and loved plenty of violent video games. But I always felt it was a sadder thing that we didn't have more games take up the mantle of these two series at a AAA level.

The melee boss wasn't about getting behind him and hitting him. You have to hit him 3 times, then he turns around and gives you an opportunity to grab his gun via the counter button. The challenge lies in the fact, that you can't hit him with the same attack twice. Great video though. Much Love.

My brother did a speed-run on this game with me helping to try and get the platinum trophy, and going for the record times with the best the developers could do changed the game for me. One thing that I love in this game is how it was the first game being a full 3D plateformer fps game and a parkour game, and basically created a genre and initiated a wave of game implementing parkour and full body awareness, YET it's to me still the best one out there. I never played any game since that capture the feeling that well. The first ME have the best gameplay, the best animations and best feeling. Even Catalyst have every single animation feeling less good. I don't know how they did it, but they nailed it in the first try and nobody managed to beat them on animation and flow feeling. Gameplay is perfect/20

Please don't hurt Catalyst I beg of you, my heart already hurts enough from the fact that it won't get a sequel and with it a chance to fix the problems it had because Patrick Soderlund. like really though, I think the worst thing about mirror's edge is that, had it had another chance- with the newer engine and graphics and whatnot- to expand upon what they already had laid the groundwork for with Catalyst. Mirror's Edge 1 was the beginning of the idea, and Catalyst was them expanding on the idea, with a more refined story and movement system and a more in depth and beautiful world. Mirror's Edge 3 would have been the cycle of Refining that idea- taking that groundwork and building with it. Hell, everyone knows the main reason 3 isn't happening is because it wasn't multiplayer and didn't have microtransactions (he was the guy that made the FIFA Ultimate Team thing happen, for you newcomers reading this), as if they couldn't use a spec of their literal billions to implement multiplayer and cosmetics into the sequel. Deadlines, Crunchtimes, Investors. Man, Corporate creativity is garbage.

One of the aspects of the game that pulled me in was the thing you actually didn't like - the oversaturated colours and the predominantly white backdrop. This paired with the music felt like this game was developed by psychiatrists and not game devs - the calming and soothing nature of the environment contrasted hugely with the times when you'd fall to your death, because falling off buildings was truly terrifying. This game played with my emotions without having to resort to a strong plot and that's how you make a good, unique, fun to play game. There's something about FPS games that cannot be achieved by 3rd person games or those isometric top-down titles a lot of people enjoy and that is you just feel you're there. I played Mirrors Edge and Infamous 1 and 2 around the same time and you have no idea how i wished that these games were crossed over because of the parkour. Edge made me wanna see Faith with Delsin work together. Great unique games.

God damn. The graphics still hold up massively for 2008 compared to today.

Something I remember vividly about this game; after you climb back out after the sewer level, you can clip one of the shotguns from the Blues through the fence that blocks off the door you need to get to Jackknife, and then you can pick it up from the other side with this method and have a firearm in a location Faith is not intended to be holding one in. When you go through the door to the chase section, Faith is scripted to drop that weapon (ostensibly so you can't just shoot him), even though there is no reason she should really be able to get one in that area. It's an interesting case of game design. I'm not sure if this applies to other sections, or if the designers had the foresight that someone would glitch or cheat a ranged weapon in.

Side note; shotgun blasts can open doors in Mirror's Edge, a neat detail for a game where shooting clearly isn't supposed to be a primary mechanic.

I have to agree with you with the kinda boring "white" missions, the most memorable missions for me are the ones that include more color to the stage, the best example is Pirandello Krueger, whick I think is also a fan favorite, is one of the if not the most memorable mission on the game, from the orange buildings in the start and latter parts of the mission, to the reds in most of it. I just love it, while in the white-est missions I can hardly get myself to remember most of their progeression. Other point I would like to mention is that there are some easter eggs or lore-like elements hidden in the missions that engage you, even when the story isn't the best thing. Overall great video, for one my favorite games!

4:50 actually the colour-scheme was invented by chance. DICE was debugging and during that they disabled textures. To their surprise, they noticed that the world looks and the game works better like this. ^^

I think the graphical design is actually one of the reasons this game is so timeless and still looks great today. It's just so pleasant to look at and, although not as interesting as other games like Assassin's Creed, you can't really have a gripe with it and even now, against other games that have a bigger graphical capacity, you aren't put off by any low res textures or pixilation because the design is so minimalistic.

That's the point faith sees the world as more of a playground than a place to live and work at And your seeing the world through her eyes heck I went to the enchanted forest and I saw a part of the a bench that looked more like a springboard than an actual resting spot but of course I didn't use it like that
