It just so happens that animals make friends only with their own kind or similar animals. Sure, there have been instances when a cat got along with a puppy. However, there have also been cases of completely unusual interactions, such that they’re even difficult to believe in. It’s actually very entertaining to watch how these animals try to communicate with each other, and it’s interesting to try and find the reason behind this relationship.

I'm a 70 years young gentleman and have a good grasp on life and this posting brought tears of joy. I'm so grateful that someone saw the orangutan’s depression, but more so that they did something about it. I am not normally in favour of animals in captivity, but for the survival of endangered ones, it the only way sometimes. So happy to see animals happy with their life. I hope other zoo's take notice and follow this zoo's innovated idea.

Thank you! Hearing the orangs referred to as monkees throughout the entire video (vs a once or twice mistake) made me both cringe & angry. These videos are seen by countless numbers of people and sadly, many of those viewers have limited or no access to "proper" education; what they see on the internet is taken as fact. But I also was afraid I'd come across as a nit-picking Karen for pointing out a mistake that, while pretty major for a fact-based article, if corrected wouldn't have affected the viewers' ultimate take-away. I always thought I would be fine with my own company forever, as long as I had my stuff to work with (making my music and writing). but there are even limits to the most crazy homebodies of us, it seems. I casually slipped into just not talking or doing anything with anyone for a long while and became quite literally insane. It's like your balance and reward centers get out of wack. ... started constantly stuffing my face with extremely unhealthy foods such as icing, sticks of butter, brown sugar, and vanilla extract all mixed and put in warm soft wheat tortillas for every meal... laying down in bed all day watching Star Trek... getting pissed, cursing to myself out loud when I had to do tiny things likie brush my teeth or go to the grocery... my muscles just melted away and I started to look like Gollum. things can just get weird when you're in a hole alone for a while i guess.

Animals have feelings just like people do. They need interaction with others, be it people or animals. Loosing the interaction that they are used too can make them lonely and depressed. They need some kind of stimulus to keep them happy. What this zoo did was genius. They created an environment that helped many different animals. Well done!

Humans have destroyed their natural habitat, so we breed them in captivity hoping that one day all captive animals will find a safe living space in the wild. The ideal would be to have sufficiently large nature reserves, but for political or financial reasons this is generally not possible. Zoos raise money to care for animals, and make the public care about their welfare. On the other hand, we must boycott parks like Marineland which imprison marine animals such as killer whales in small basins when they need to swim hundreds of kilometres.

Another key difference to note between the orangutans' interactions with the otters vs. human park visitors, is that they're able to actually touch and play with their new friends, rather than being separated by glass, only able to look. Orangutans are very, very social animals and need a community. They are not meant to be kept in the isolation of zoos. Im so sad about captive animals. Especially those who are healthy enough to thrive in the wild but were captured very young and cant be released because they adapted to captivity. I mean its understandable if the animals have health concerns that prevent their release, but most zoos have very unethical practices pf buying young animals that otherwise could've been rehabilitated and released.

Many lions, tigers and beers have been abused by circus ppl, and it's wrong to do that to a wild animal. I've seen videos of circus ppl putting wild animals like a bear or lion in small cages for years on end and that's Animal abuse, and it's why we have rescuers take them away from circus ppl and put them on wild life reservations. And often times these wild animals need dental work done on their teeth because the circus ppl neglected them, and it hurts them to eat food.

My mum had bowel cancer & chemo, then twenty years later suffered with bladder cancer & shingles + mum had a Urinary Tract infection, I didn’t know; if gone undetected can affect your heart & brain. Mum’s went to her brain. So now she is at peace. It will always hurt, sometimes more than other times. My friends & family do support me, but as they say, “you can have a hundred people around you & still feel alone”. It’s just hard knowing both our parents are dead. I will always miss them. Pairi Daiza is a very animal friendly zoo where they have a lot of space and distraction. The zoo is not even open all year around just to protect the animals from too much stress. They were never bored…. Let alone dying from loneliness. This zoo invests a lot into the welfare for the animals.

Elderly in facilities are already form very close attachments to staff, and likewise. We become a substitute family. We were there for them during the COVID struggle. They saw how hard and shirt staffed we worked, but we still comforted them anyway we could. As soon as possible we had family visits through patio fences, throw plexiglass, then together with masks.

There is another word "Menschenaffe" wich literally means humanmonkey and/or humanape, but this is rarely used by anyone. Most just say "Affe" to any ape and monkey that isnt a Gorilla.

Some were, technically speaking, but were rescued from a certain death in the wilderness or from poachers/smugglers' hands and relocated into a zoo. Great many of the animals would be unable to survive in the wilds anymore, many would have no suitable environment left to return to. Orangutans, like all the great apes, are suffering from habitat loss. While I agree on especially many mammals and birds, with their more developed brains (compared to snakes, lizards, insects, and such), suffering from living in captivity, and thus I see zoos as sad places, the individual animals in them often have no better alternatives whatsoever. That's why it's essential to try to make the zoos internally better places. Unfortunately zoos aren't financial gold mines, so developing them is economically difficult.

Animals are smarter then people. I worked with Baboons, marmosets, Rhesus, etc.... University of Miami ran test. Nothing bad. Baboons cage, rest were like 5 blocks with everything. Not a zoo. Merck pharmaceutical Owned Rhesus. It was my Passion 13 yrs 7dys wk I could sit down with them, hand feed alpha 1st, 2nd rank, etc... I was alpha but we had a beautiful bond, trust. I literally spoiled them with veggies, peanuts, Crack corn, sunflower seeds. Their smarter then people. God creations. 🥰🙏❤️

Having ferrets, which are in the same family as otters, they are the most inquisitive little creatures I have ever encountered. They are extremely social and I think more curious than cats. I have to guess that otters are very similar with their social skills and quirky curious minds. What a great idea! Brought joy to all of their lives. I love the thought of the otters being able to swim from their enclosure to the orangutans. You can get even more creative with it. The more they can explore the happier they will be. My ferrets are free range. The thought of caging them would be like keeping a cat in a cage. It would break their little souls.

Otters are very friendly - I personally watched them play tag at an Indiana, USA zoo with a 5 year old boy. He was running alongside the aquarium glass wall, switching directions as fast as he could, while the otters swam underwater inside the glass aquarium, matching his speed and direction with ease. Every time he switched direction to try to lose his "tail" and the otter instantly flipped over and reversed direction too, the boy would shout with glee. I also knew a native american Ojibwe medicine woman & grandmother, who tells of playing with a wild otter family as a very young girl. She was watching the otters play on a mud slide into the creek, and it looked like such fun that the girl could not resist taking a turn on the mudslide herself. This startled the whole otter family, but the adults came and circled her swimming and sniffing her while she froze, and eventually they touched her showing trust and friendship. The girl began visiting the otters daily, sharing her lunch with them. One day she had the bright idea to invite the otters to come and visit her home for a tea party, and she enticed the whole otter family to follow her home, where she fed them bits of cooked fish on her tiny tea party saucers at a short tree stump/ table just their size. A great time was had by all, and her parents were amazed, because when she previously told them about her adventures with the otters, they thought she just had vivid imaginary friends. The human family moved away shortly afterward, as it was time for the young girl to go to school and there wasn't one nearby. This was not the first time Grandmother made friends with local wildlife; she got her childhood name "walks with bears" when she was just beginning to walk; a bear family stopped by the wilderness clearing where her family lived, and the cubs played with her, and she was steadying herself while walking by gripping the bear cub's coats as they walked beside her under mama bear's watchful eyes. When Grandmother's mama saw this, it scared her half to death; she feared what a normally over-protective mama bear could do to her bold daughter gripping the cubs, but the mama bear was very patient and caring to this tiny, hairless cub of a different species. The bears left after the grown humans showed up.

I am intrigued by it. I want them to try it with the other great apes. Clearly, something similar to what makes us have a propensity for keeping pets is part of their make up too. I find it strange that different species were "discovered" to be able to live and play together. Anyone that has ever had a farm or ranch knows this. I have dogs playing with goats. When we had cows, the goats would often come to them and play and they would try to headbutt each other. We would give cracked corn in a 50 gallon barrel that had been cut in half length-wise so they would come when we called them. One of the goats got smart and she would lie in the barrel and eat to her heart's content. The cows would try to get her out with their horns but could not as she laid real low. The cows would start bellowing their displeasure. :D The cows would even play with our dogs. And of course, many of them wanted to be with us or play with us. Elsie, one of cows, would run over to my wife for her to scratch her neck. Some of the goats would jump on us. Many of the animals wanted little "snacks" that we had for them and would try to sniff our pockets and nudge us for them.

Great story. To bad humans aren't as friendly. Been alone for 15 years. My animals are my friends and have saved my life. My cats play with some Racoons I've been feeding since they were all little. Different species of animals playing together and getting along is an awsome thing to see. Glad those Orangutans have some friends in those Otters.

Many years ago, the National Zoo in Washington, DC had a pair of adult orangutans. They had just recently lost their baby and the mother had gone into a depression and wasn't eating. They needed to do something. They'd found a surrogate. To the amazement of the people in the room, they brought in a young armadillo. When the caretaker put the armadillo down, it ran directly over to the female, who picked it up. As she lifted it, the armadillo's tail was madly spinning around, and then she cradled it in her arms. I spent 15-20 minutes watching, marveling over the whole thing. Went back decades later and they have a thriving population of orangutans, with a skyway above a large section of the zoo.
