We spent the day visiting Dracula's Castle! Or did we? The history here is a little confusing, but we spent the day exploring Corvin's Castle and Bran's Castle! Romania has so many fantastic examples of medieval castles throughout Transylvania, and I think Corvin's Castle and Bran's Castle are the best castles to visit!

Hi! We are Heather, Bradey, Alexa and Chloe.
We are raising our kids to face their fears, to step outside of their comfort zones and to try new things. Family travel is the best way we know how to do this.
We want to inspire others to travel with an open mind and to see that it is completely possible to travel and fly with kids! Traveling is one of the best things we have ever done to strengthen our family, and to open up our minds about how big this world is.
Thanks for following along!

Poienari Citadel is Vlad The Impaler's castle, which is a ruin, but most of the time he usually lived at the Old Court in Targoviste.

Will you visit Peles Castle from Sinaia or Rasnov Citadel, near Brasov? I strongly recommend you to go also to Iasi and to Sturdza Castle in Miclauseni, in Moldavia (eastern region of Romania), even your friends from Bucharest who arranged your tour didn't tell you about Iasi. You will enjoy a different architecture of Romania.

Ioan de Hunedoara (Latin Ioannes Corvinus, the family name comes from the Latin "Corvus", which means "Raven" )was one of the most important personalities in the history of Romania, Hungary and the Balkans. In 1409 his family Corvin (Voicu Corvin) received from Sigismund of Luxembourg the domain and the castle of Hunedoara, as a reward for his deeds of arms in the battles with the Turks. Surname he was subjected to the process of making a genealogy according to the fashion of the time ( According to the custom of the time, Voicu Corvin took the name Hunyadi (from Hunedoara)) His son, Matthew Corvinus, became king of Hungary. When he was reproached for having no royal origins, he referred to his Romanian origins as the only ones who stopped the Ottoman Empire from conquering Europe.

These are some of the usual cliché locations for tourists. Beautiful places, to be sure, but still very little for a "tour of Romania". Check out Iasi (this is the key one), Oradea, Timisoara, Arad, Alba Iulia, Piatra Neamt (and surroundings), Targu Neamt (citadel and the surroundings), Roman (city and surroundings, including the Episcopal Seat and Miclauseni Castle) Suceava (and the surroundings, notably the Painted Monasteries - UNESCO), Maramures, Sinaia (city and surroundings), Tulcea and the Danube Delta, etc.

Yeah, it's true, Vlad the Impaler did not live either at Corvin castle or Bran, he did not even rule in Transylvania at all, as it was part of Hungary at the time, he ruled Wallachia, which is the Southern part of today's Romania. He was actually (most likely) born in Transylvania, Sighisoara but never ruled there. His real castle is Poenari Castle. I am not sure why they associated Bran castle with Dracula though. His real castle is even more scenic as it is really in the mountains, but unfortunately it is just a ruin nowadays, it wasn't preserved like Bran or Corvin and not a lot of people vist it. Cheers from Brasov by the way, I really enjoyed your Romania videos.

Vlad Tepes ( Vlad Dracula ) was Imprisoned there at Corvin's Castle for several years until he was released and later after his wife did suicide at Poenari Castle by jumping from a cliff to avoid Ottoman capture he was caught and imprisoned at Istanbul and executed. Corvin Castle at that time was holded by Austro-Hungarian Empire and often Austro-Hungarian Empire was Jealous of Wallachian Rulers because of their Victories against Muslim Ottoman Empire ( because their FAME among the Pope at Rome ) so Austro-Hungarian fought against Ottoman Empire, but also against Wallachian Kingdom. This happened after Michael the Brave Uniting Romania under One single Kingdom and then also betrayed by Vienna and Assassinated so they could take Transylvania under occupation again.. In WW1 Romania did manage to Avenge all History by Defeating Austro-Hungarian Empire, German Empire and Ottoman Empire with the help of Russia Empire and France weaponry..

Bran castle was originally a fortress built by the teutons later on rebuilt in the form you see now. During times the ownership “traveled” from pertaining to the city/ to Wallachia (during Mircea the old as a possible refuge spot from the ottomans)/ the Hungarian crown (Iancu de Hunedoara from the Corvin Castle). Vlad was the nephew of Mircea the old and the ruler of Wallachia in those times. Brasov was first ally then enemy to him. It’s a sort of Game of Thrones story. He knew Bran alright, and Corvin Castle but the story is long and intricate. That was the shortcut of the shortcut above.

i'm sorry to disappoint you but Bran Castle is not the castle where lived Vlad Tepes (it's a beautiful lie for tourists) , his real place where he lived and rule Wallachia (Southern Romania today) in 15th century (1456-1462) was *The Fortress or Castle Poenari (in Arges County)* ,but that fortress is not well preserved now, recently received 3 millions euro from UNESCO to start to be renovated , maybe in 2-3 years will be ready for tourists

First castle was Hunyadvar, means castle of Hunyad who was a Hungarian General, later became the governor of the Kingdom of Hungary. Transylvania was part of Hungary from 896 AD to 1920 AD. The Romanian name Hunedoara comes from the Hungarian word Hunyadvar

Hungarians were always under someone else's rule, by 1200AD, Mongols invasions destroyed the so called kingdom, king Bela run away and the Hungarian kingdom was reduced to ashes, then ottomans came and conquered Hungarian territories but thank to romanian King Mathias Corvin they were defeated. Then Austrians ruled Hungary. The only period when they meant something was when they were part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. Without Austrians Hungary is just a small country, with no power in Europe.
