I have just recently been diagnosed with ADHD. I'm 50.... I told myself i was "stupid and lazy" and all the bad stuff we tend to punish ourselves with. I now have learnt to be kinder to myself because there is a reason for how I've been for the last 50 years. xx

AuDHD makes for a hard to explain experience because sometimes they clash like overtired, hungry, frustrated Bert and Ernie, and sometimes they work together so well that other people think you're a genius. (which doesn't help the imposter syndrome / rejection sensitivity dysphoria when it only lasts until the interesting part of the project is done) And then there are the other parts of the neurospicy combo pack

A great tip that a friend of mine who is a a librarian gave me some years back is to write down two major objectives, and two minor ones. In that way, the list is not overwhelming, and two of the choices are low hanging fruit that are easier to accomplish and thus give you a feeling of success to draw on. I find that this works well for my needs.

I've found that the balance for my chronically ill AuDHD self is to block out my schedule the day of, and not further than that. I use Notion and Google Keep for recurring to do lists and reference sheets to help me remember stuff, but most of the time that won't be scheduled in. After I go through my morning, I block out my workday and any to dos. But blocking further out is just not flexible enough and makes me stress out to the point I'll start ignoring ALL of my notifications 😅

On the to do list - I’m working with my therapist on this one. We opted to use an idea from the bullet journal community and that’s the ultimate to do or “apocalist”. Everything you need or would like to do gets written down. There’s the acknowledgment that the list is never ending and some things on it will ever get done. In this case, it’s the idea that it was in my head taking up space and I was too focused, but now it’s on paper and I can revisit at some point and do it, be it a day/month/week/year/never. If it’s something I want to do and it gets repeated in the list continuously, then maybe I need to bump that one up and it can be one of my “big priorities” and I might use a little effort to get it done. It’s been doing all right so far. There’s a lot that won’t get done within the week or even month on there, but there’s the acknowledgment I want to do it and if I don’t, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

List making adhder here! I consistently have at least 10 lists on my phone for different categories such as chores, groceries I need to buy, homework, etc. and my issue is I'll forget to do something if I don't write the individual steps down so I put a million steps but then I get overwhelmed by how many things are in my list and I end up doing nothing!! I'm also unemployed (and 25) and have never had a real job... I have to find things I want to do in my day and take them seriously: art, gardening, video games, whatever, I schedule them in and try to make sure I do them. I don't know what your situation is, but constantly thinking about getting a job just made me feel miserable and inadequate, and I spent a lot of time looking at my phone. I was also struggling with chronic exhaustion, but that's lessening now I'm on ADHD meds

I have never got on with time blocking either (turns out that is really what "revision timetables" were after all as well) because if I get behind then its all ruined so I might as well give up! Since my ADHD diagnosis I have started adding time estimates to my to do list so that I can see all the tasks that need to be done and how long each will likely take - I can then pick a task that I have time/energy for rather than staring at a list and feeling overwhelmed. This started with a college course that had videos to watch as part of the "self study" - I logged on and noted down how long each video was on my to do list and found this made my decision making much smoother and then I actually got more done so I try to implement the same system elsewhere when I can.

U was 57 when i got the diagnosis of autism, and now 3 years later and watching videos by adhd as well as autism people i think i am also adhd. For ne the diagnosis of autism was a relief. For so so so many years i thought i was lazy, lacking backbone.and was a spoiled brat because i got so easily overwhelmed and grumpy because i was on the verge of gettingn overwhelmed. It all fell into place when i got my diagnosis. U recognised finally how much perseverance i have put in to maintain friendships, to be able to work years on end in jobs that challenged me a bit too much, were too much, for at least 38 hours a week. Now i am officially seen as unable to work, and i have help to keep my house clean. I am so much happier now, more relaxed than i have ever been, but still very very easily stressed. I am still learning how to deal with swveral issues but i am getting better, slowly.

I am so happy you made this video Jessica. I have ADHD which I’m pretty sure I’ve got it from my grandpa and my mother. I like watching your videos because I think you’re an inspiration.❤! One thing I kept on getting a lot of growing up, but was a more severe example of this condition. And people automatically assuming because they had only experience and witnessed people with extreme ADHD I was to also be treated the same way I cannot really blame my public school teachers as they’ve really never had an example like me, in terms of being a student, I have also got a bit of autism high functioning, though like my ADHD. But when I got diagnosed to go to special education here in America, the woman testing me just labeled me as unknown learning disability. I don’t know what exactly that means. Because as far as I’m concerned, that’s just a very cryptic way of saying I am cut from the same cloth as the other 99% of my mothers family. Thanks for the life hacks I’ve been curious as to how other people managed there, ADHD.

When you got to the part about you and time blocking not being friends and the to do list and how you start with something simple that you know you can cross off and it being 3 to 5 things I was laughing so hard because that’s what I’ve done for years too! I’m still trying to get assessed and get the official ADHD diagnosis but I’ve been suspecting it for like three years now and one got me through the assessing phase and suspected I had it but then wouldn’t officially diagnosed me- so frustrating! 🤪🤪 But I like you, I have found that most of the things that are recommended to help ADHD brains are things I was already doing because they helped me with energy and with chronic pain and so there was less of a leap there than I was expecting which was quite nice for a change! 😃😃 I also really love the way you showed Rupert talking excitedly over the meal and the flower pictures and the fun of having both his Mama and Mummy tuck him in etc but didn’t invade his privacy by showing too much or having a camera right in his face the whole time as some other people might do! I thought that was a really nice balance and a very nice way to do things and oh my gosh his voice is just the cutest thing ever! 💜💜 And yes your hair looks lovely, and I also absolutely LOVE that red lipstick! 💄💄 Fun and very relatable video to watch! 🙂🙂

Hello, also diagnosed with ADHD late in life and chronically overfill my lists with things I want to do with no mind to what my chronically ill self can REASONABLY do.🎉 (It's a special kind of self-dedtructive optimism and I had no idea anyone else had the same issue I wish there was a support group for it or something.) I also have severe time blindness, just for smaller increments of time- hours instead of days. I have to have my phone out to make any kind of plans, because I have no concept of when mh schedule is "full" qnd I cannot tell anyone what amount of time anything will take. Tbh your videos around having ADHD make me feel much less alone as an adult with this disorder. I'm in the U.S. and there's this perception that ADHD is something you "grow out of." I'm stealing the idea to have a daily notes sheet. Hopefully that will help me avoid research spirals at 2 a.m. maybe. Some things that helped me, for anyone reading this: 1. Rank the tasks on your sprawling lists. (Ex: In the next hour, today, tomorrow, this week, at some point) 2. If you like computers/programming/similar, write your tasks as if-then statements to get a better grip on the time needed for tasks. Ex: if the time = 2 p.m. then completed tasks = [list of tasks] Then I look at the difference between the goal time (2 p.m.) and current time (1 p.m.). THEN I look at my Task list and estimate times LAST. For whatever reason, I can estimate Task completion times when I have a set time "space" to put them in, but not when someone asks "how long will this Task take you." It doesn't always work, but it works often enough! 3. The biggest thing that's helped me with time blindness is having an audible clue that time is passing, like a ticking analog clock. Because numbers mean nothing to me, physically seeing the hands on the clock move helps me recognize how much time has actually passed. Abstract number units mean nothing to me. 🙃 (I also legitimately find clocks ticking soothing- It reminds me that time is passing and that even the most unpleasant experiences cannot last forever. ) HOWEVER, Some people find clocks VERY stressful, so ymmv with that. I've also used albums or TV programs I know really well to track time. I can conceptualize "I want to be done with this task by track 7/episode 3/etc." Hope that helps someone. P.S. if you want a cute, tiny ticking clock, look on ebay for "vintage Travel alarm clocks." They're the size of a make-up compact and come in a huge range of cute vintage/retro styles. They don't cost a lot either because there are so many available. (Remember, if you traveled in the past you couldn't use your phone as an alarm! Folks depended on wake-up calls or tiny travel alarm clocks.) I constantly forget to buy batteries, so having a retro clock that I wind up is more effective, cost efficient, and reduces waste. I also like the little alarm clocks (or pocket watches) because they fit my style. If I find something aesthetically pleasing, I'm more likely to use it. It feels more like a fun stylish flair to my day, instead of an essential accommodation. Check the listings carefully to make sure the clock works before you buy and enjoy. ❤

0:44 There's research that indicates ADHD people tend to fall asleep about an hour later on average and wake up later cos of it (probably influenced by the brains taking longer to calm down before sleep). I know that's a thing I've always struggled with lots (my average bedtime is nearer 1.30am)... ADHD also has a genetic component... I struggle (and always have) to get up in the mornings.

I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult (last year, in fact). Literally all of my writing is lists. Instant dopamine rush: listing things I already accomplished (even if it was just drinking enough water) and immediately crossing it off. It's also strangely motivating for the list items that I haven't finished yet. Time blindness is also so real, never give me dates or I will lose them instantly. Also, does anyone have constantly-put-stuff-in-parentheses (for-added-context) ADHD too?

So, I'm definitely a list ADHD person for many years now, but the only way it works for me is by following my energy. I have two sections on my list, long term and short term, and I put tasks in there. Every day I have a lot of energy I complete as many as I can. Very hard to feed myself, so I order in my groceries, and batch cook at a high energy day. I am also never hard on myself when I don't do tasks. Nothing is very urgent really except for eating and the weekly hair washing, when it come to the rest, the world can wait 😂

As a person who got diagnosed with ADHD late in life (I'm 31, but diagnosed at 28) it was not only a bit of an aha everything makes sense moment, but also brought on a lot of grief for all the struggles, gaslighting, and trauma I went through when I was just severely adhd with no coping skills because how can I have resources, when I don't even know I have something and have no one to relate to? I feel so seen. Thank you 🥹❤️

I'm not diagnosed with ADHD or anything yet, but I do all of these things 🙈 I also don't know how you can manage getting ready and doing work in the mornings?? 😅 I don't even have insomnia but I cannot make my brain do anything useful in the morning. Getting dressed is hard enough let alone doing hair and makeup before 9am. And proper work is usually not getting started until like 4pm!

8:30 - Ok but I also pick up notes of specifically play-doh in certain foods and absolutely cannot eat them. I finally looked it up the other day, and apparently it’s sometimes a sign that something in it has started going rancid? I seem to pick it up when others can’t, but I suspect that could be from neurodivergent hypersensitivity.

I'm not diagnosed with ADHD, and I'm not sure whether I have it, or if my brain just has ADHD-like tendencies (these things are a spectrum, after all). But I remembered halfway through this video that I got a message I hadn't replied to, paused, replied to the message, forgot about this video, and proceeded to spend like half an hour doing other thing on my computer. I felt that this was a very apropos thing to happen.

I also have ADHD, and I love making lists! They're just never realistic? I am very bad at accurately guessing how much time something will take. So I make a big thing on my list (say, finish first draft of book), but then make smaller steps/more achievable list under this bigger point (say, chapter 1-10), and then I get to cross stuff out, but also keep a nice overview of what needs doing! 😌 If a thing is not written down on my to-do list, it doesn't exist though. And I need to write it down right away, or it might disappear forever ... Or at least until someone asks me, if I've done the thing, that they told me I needed to do ... 😅

I am guilty of the long lists. But it works for me at least in some regard. It calms my anxiety to know that I won't forget something, even if it takes me a year to get to it. I'm too forgetful, so I have to have the ever running endless list, or important stuff gets missed. I usually have the big list, and then pull the "fire" list of things "on fire" that need to be handled in the next day or two. I like to make the list on excel, and break it down by urgency, so more important stuff is in one column, and back burner projects are down at the other end.

Yes doing the "research" thing going down the rabbit hole & end up looking at 5 different not exactly related subjects that are only loosely held together by strands whilst losing an hour,..... or 2. But I'm also autistic which means I have my routines that enable me to do my required daily things but the ADHD imagination and creativity to adapt as necessary. Unless I'm tired or overwhelmed then my ADHD pretty much takes over making it very hard to focus in any real way.

Timer is a mystery but I would guess I was 40 (5 years ago) I learned that I can add ADHD to the list of conditions I deal with. It was such a relief though - I have felt like a failure so long for having a poor memory or losing things. Forgetting to do things that others felt like an obvious task to get done. Thank you for leaving in all the bits that show what life is like with ADHD. I know that I am not alone in this but having something I can show people and say LOOK 👀 - imagine living like this. Because that is exactly what I do. I loved hearing Rupert, both on and off camera. Thank you for advocating and helping so many people feel seen.

Belgium only requires that members of the royal family ask permission from the elected government, also the potential spouse can't be part of the Dutch royal family, but that's a holdover from war of independence against the Netherlands and would probably be adjusted if it ever came up.

The Netherlands actually recently made the announcement that it wouldn't be an issue if our current crown princess were to want to marry a woman. I believe legally gay marriage is the same as straight marriage here so pretty much all the rights should carry over. This was, of course, a completely hypothetical issue in the first place, as the crown princess' sexuality is not public and does not need to be

I feel like my notepad is filled with loads of thoughts but i forget i wrote stuff in there lol 6 months later why do i have this note that says hitman but ghosts I have list making adhd definitely lol But my list is like "clean kitchen" and then I end up separating it in my mind which makes it like 40 tasks, it's not just clean kitchen it's like take dishes out of sink, stack plates, check all rooms for dishes , get distracted never finishes kitchen lol

I call my calender my digital memory; if it is not in the calender it will just not happen. And I can put reminder alarms on especially irregular but important things. I write down my thoughts as well or anything that I do not want to forget. You'd be completely amazed the crap I forget. Example... I forget to put shoes on. So I'm walking around in my slippers all day. It would take me hours to realize and by that time it's time to go home. This has unfortunately happened a lot. I seriously need to buy a pair to leave in my car.

I do like lists, but not all the time. IF I have a lot of things that HAVE to be done, it is list time. This is especially true if I have to run out and do errands. When I do that, I make sure I have each one laid out so I can make a round trip. For example, I have to pick up something for the cats (vet,) a doctor's appointment (myself) and medicine. Then I might add a trip to the post office, something from the grocery store and buy a book. I will figure out the best way to make the trip so I hit some things on the way to the furthest out place then come back a different way to get the other things off my list. If I have several chores around the house, then I'll put down every single thing so I can knock it off my list. I remember my wife's nephew (ADHD) would take a simple thing off the list before he did it, then never did it. Until I finally told him he couldn't mark it off until AFTER he did it. We all knew it would take him 5 minutes - MAX - to do it, but it would take me half an hour and I didn't really want to spend that much time on a step-ladder. Normally I try to only do one thing a day. Wednesdays is my big day. It is trash/cat box day. Then, every 2 weeks we get to throw in recycling (this week.) And while it normally takes between 45 minutes on a normal trash day, to an hour and a half on recycling day, today it took 2 hours. In part because I hurt my back in a fall in August and because I had a bunch of boxes to break down this week. I'm going to say that my age is certainly a factor.

Wonder if YT does this intentionally: video by a disabled person talking about disability, there is a phone advert with almost strobe effect from all the cuts from black to white background. Doesn't cause myself problems other than short mild stress headache, but still understand strobe causes problems for others.

@@Draggonny Had watched some other channels, but they their editing was not strobe-y (if that's a word); might have had some choppy edits but not the intentional full strobe-effect. Happened again just clicking-in to reply, another advert with strobe black-white-black-white. Seems YT is trying to "both sides" like when they show anti-LGBT+ (Evan Xtian, TERF, etc) adverts on vids by LGBT+ speakers :/

Note: running too many tabs open at the same time overburdens your computer’s RAM (short term memory, basically), which on macs tend to be Not A Lot. Remembering that your computer, like your brain, only has so many things it can do at once helps close those tabs you don’t actually need at that one second.
@Draggonny
@Draggonny Жыл бұрын
You just need to do a tab cull every day. Sometimes I just open tabs up to check the spelling of a word or something. I don't need to go back to it. If a tab requires further action leave it open. If it doesn't then close it.

Lists definitely don’t work for me. I use a mind mapping software as a to do thing because I can then elaborate on what needs to happen for each of the bigger things to occur. That turned out to be my blocker with the standard list. Currently on the waiting list for formal diagnosis but it’s taking sooooooooooooooo long. Appointment should have been March 23 but it hasn’t even been made yet. Was put on the waiting list January 2022. nHS clearly has the same issue with lists we do. Mid forties and my brain is falling apart, but at least I know why even if health care refuses to, you know, help. Despite the amount of money I’ve given them over the years!
