I’m currently working as a excavator operator of 7 years but fancy a change. I want to be on my feet more so I’m looking at being a setting out engineer. Would you say it will be a little easier for me to master as I’ve been working alongside engineers before?

Yeah I think so! Always worth a try

🙋♀️I am a woman going into engineering too. Did law and chemistry degrees wanting to work in fancy forensic labs. Ended up going for jobs that requires me to drive a van everywhere and deal with dirt 😆 I guess the upside is that it’s more active than a office job, I really don’t like going to gym.

I´ve seen women pulling heavier loads at the gym, they could easily handle a tripod and a hammer. It´s only a matter of motivation. Great job, really cool approach.

is it normal practice for using site labour to get your scaffold boards, sink and adjust the bolt-sets? seems like you've got it pretty easy compared to most of us.

Yesterday I argued with one of my friends about women's capability of working in a difficult field like construction engineer. He thought women can't do it. I told him they may not be in this field yet, but they will day by day when they will be introduced to it properly. Now, today I found you, best of luck.

I think I might wanna be a construction worker, I love building things, I am in stage crew and woodshop at my school, and they are definitely the highlight of my day. Are there programs do you think so as a high school student I can visit the work site and see what you dudes do in person?
@SheWhoDaresWins7 жыл бұрын
Hey yeah its a great career if you love building things! see if you can get some work experience at one of the big building companies near you. I know a lot of the big companies work with schools to get young adults on site for experience.

Look up a local construction company that’ll hired interns and work there during the summer if you can.

What’s the difference between a construction engineer and operating engineer?
@SheWhoDaresWins5 жыл бұрын
Not entirely sure what an operating engineer is sorry? Never come across one in construction
@sadieesther97215 жыл бұрын
This Is A Man's World sorry I think it’s a US thing. Operating engineer joins the equipment operators union, you learn all types of equipment, and once you’re a journeyman operating engineer I think you are a site boss similar to what you do.... measuring the work that others are doing to make sure it’s correct

You're an inspiration! I just found you on social media. I graduated with my engineering degree and I've been in the T&D industry over the past year. I might take a traveling project engineer job for a civil/ROW construction company but I have concerns with traveling and being housed for weeks at a time for a project. This would put a lot of strain on my personal life and relationship with my boyfriend. Do you have any insights when it comes to traveling for work and being away from family?
@SheWhoDaresWins4 жыл бұрын
thanks Kelsey and congrats on the work! Travelling is hard and being away from loved ones even more so. With that said I did it lots during my 20's and you can do it! I always made sure i wasn't away for too long, but made it work with my boyfriend (who is now my husband :)) for at least 2-3 years. It's great to do for the experience too!

How do u deal with labourers since all of 'em are males? I'm gonna binge watch ur videos to seek insights.. I 'm just thinking about the breaking da' glass ceilings, sexism & marriage life of a female engr.. I hope eng'g will be a diverse industry in the near future..
@SheWhoDaresWins7 жыл бұрын
Hey, I actually probably have less trouble with the labourers than management ha! It can be hard at the start to earn your respect on site especially if you are in experienced, but I generally find if you respect your co-workers and work hard alongside them you won't have any problems. It is a tough world to work in at times but stay true to yourself and speak up at the right times. I managed to rise quite quickly into a management role, but still prefer my time on site with the labour guys :) Best of luck to you

Hi, where did you train? & how long did it take you, were you able to go straight into work as a setting out engineer ? Thanks - good vids btw :-)
@SheWhoDaresWins7 жыл бұрын
Paul Haywood hey Paul thanks for watching! I have a geography/geology degree which took me into construction. From there after 8 years I re trained as a setting out engineer. I did a course at Finchley collage and then did lots of work experience before my first job. I also worked alongside a setting out engineers for years in my previous job which made the transition a little easier. Hope this helps
@paulhaywood33997 жыл бұрын
This Is A Man's World Finchley college, I'm thinking of doing their setting out course next month, I have No total station experience but do have 25+ years of groundworks How much do you think I need to spend on a total station, there seems to be a huge difference in price range Cheers for reply btw
@SheWhoDaresWins7 жыл бұрын
Paul Haywood great idea. Reza the guy who does the course is great. He knows me well. It's a good course because you can go for as long as you want. Getting the total station experience is the hardest thing, because the kit you use on different jobs can change. For example its like learning how to use an iPhone then when you get to site someone hands you a Samsung and you are expected to get it straight away. The principles of setting out always stay the same but the kit changes. Try if you can to use different brands of machines. I've taught a few ground workers how to get to grips with them. The good thing is you have all your experience of drawing reading and knowing what needs lines and levels to draw upon. Which is a great start.
