A structural engineer is a civil engineer that has passed the istructe exam in the UK or US equivalent. It’s the hardest exam I have ever taken but only after passing it was I a structural engineer. To do so I first qualified as a civil engineer 2 years earlier. Takes about 10-15 academic plus practical years before you have the capability to pass the istructe exam.

You can do civil engineering as well as structural engineering too. That's what I did for 45 years. I enjoyed a variety of projects and activities within those projects. I thoroughly enjoyed my career. Retired in 2016.

Could you do a video about the pros/cons of the different civil engineering fields?

Ye that would be nice

Not all structural engineer has civil engineering degree, some has mechanical degree, though most of them are specialized in steel only and have basic knowledge on foundation design. But they can be very good with FEA and fatigue design

That means that a materials science and eng degree would fit as well.

In Panama Civil engineers graduated in local universities can design structures, roads, sanitary and hydraulic systems. There are civil engineers with master degrees in structures and structural engineers who design complex projects. So in our case civil engineers have a broader job opportunities.

There are differences between Structural Design Engineer and Structural Analyst Engineer (able to predict the shortcoming of the structure by using Finite Element and change the geometry of the structure by optimizing it)

Great contents Brendan. Most people in my country assume if you're an engineer you specialize in all fields of engineering.

The easiest way to tell the difference. Structural, Geotech, Water & Transport are all specialized fields. Civil Engineers normally work on something that incorporates all of those things, like a bridge, sewer system, retaining wall, etc. Structural and Geotech can do this as well, but they don't normally get a lot of experience across the board within multiple areas. If you enjoy a bit of everything choose Civil if you can't stand one of those areas, just pick a purist one. Me personally, I love it all so I work in a Civil environment.

I am a structural engineer. But people mostly confuse me for a civil engineer which mostly deals with the planning and execution part along with design of drainage systems. Great content in this video. Now I can finally explain to everyone the key difference between civil and structural Engineer.

Ey Ey Ey. Don't try to disregard your background; you are a civil engineer first before you are a structural engineer, 😂😂, Like I am a civil engineer first before I am a geotechnical engineer.. 😂.. .tongue in cheek. I know exactly what you mean; I always have to explain to people what geotechnical engineers do.

Great video! Some civil engineering sectors can overlap depending on your work area. For example my role in Aus railway track design considers aspects in mechanical engineering (dynamics, tribology, wear etc..) which a civil engineering degree would not generally cover.

Hey am from India Currently am in school Reading in class 12 Next year i will be either opting for bachelors in civil engineering or architecture I love both designing part and site work inspection....i am good at mathematics Which will be a good to go on the basis of current market ? Should i take civil or architecture...how to take the decision properly so that I don't have any regret in future Also note this...that if i take civil i will do masters in structural!
