When i graduated from the Correction academy as a 21 yr old recruit in C.O in 1973 i was assigned to the old ARS (Penn) then opened up C-74 in June of that year. In those days we had no radios, mace, or any other equipment other than a police whistle and knife (to cut down hangups) Toughest job in NYC. We are the "Rodney Dangerfields" of the municipal workforce. We never get any respect!

@Daniel Rivera Yes indeed! Back in the day, a royal beat down was mandatory. Especially since the Bronx DA would rarely pursue any assault charges. Nowadays they do, but Officers are under constant video surveillance also.

@Daniel Rivera He was in the Academy with me. Damn!! Walter turned out to be a lifer! He was always low key and smooth! Perfectly suited for a long career in the DOC. Just like your former Department Chief, Eric Taylor, who also worked at C 74 with us. Don’t have to tell you how many guys we worked with that have passed at an early age. I burned out in 78’ after working at HDM and RIH. You stay safe, and always remember not to internalize or take the job home with you. Find a release. Former Olympic Gold medalist, John Davis, who i worked with at RIH, used to listen to Opera records, i kid you not!!

Yeah, you need to know in case you get exposed to the chemical agent while using it for your own protection... happens more than people think. You'll live tho. And good luck in the academy!
