Well, if it is any help to you Sebastian, I will share with you some of my experiences I've had with Pepe Caliente over the last 6 years. My understanding of zebra finches is that they will perch on just about anything, and once they feel comfortable with you, they will eventually perch on your finger or on you without you having to do anything special other than offering yourself as a perch. In 2 of the 7 Pepe videos I uploaded, I hold him momentarily in my hand before releasing him; but, it was not because I did anything special to train him, it was only because he was so distracted in preventing me from touching his stuff that I was able to easily catch him. In regards to him eating spinach from my hand - I just offer it to him and he comes to eat it. He will only do things when it suits him. For example, he enjoys looking at his reflection from reflective surfaces, and so when he is in the mood for doing that, he will jump on my hand and then I can take him around the room to some of the reflective surfaces such as the closet door mirror, the shiny Apple Logo at the back of the iMac, the shiny doorknob, the reflective fronts of an iMac and iPad, etc. Again, I do nothing special to draw out this interesting behavior from him other than offer him my hand to hitch a ride to visit the reflective objects. In regards to who is the trainee and who is the trainer, Pepe Caliente has been the one who has been training me to attend to his daily needs. Here are some examples: one time when I took his food container out of the room to clean and refill it, I forgot to bring it back to his room, and so he buzzed around my head and then to his cage door, and he repeated this behavior several times (while squawking loudly) until I got the message that his food container was not in the room. He repeated this same behavior another time when I forgot to put his water container back in the room after I cleaned and refilled it. He displays similar behavior if there's a delay in opening the window verticals in the morning or if I forget to bring him his daily dose of spinach leaves that happens to be his favorite greens. Another thing, when he wants new nesting material, he comes below my desk and looks up at me in a particular way while making cute little chirping sounds, and he knows that particular behavior of his gets him more tissue paper, cotton, twine, green moss and alfalfa bale which he then hoards in the base of a swivel chair and also on top of a travel duffel bag in the closet! By the way, I checked your channel and saw your 2 cute zebra finches that you also allow to fly about in the room:)

Thank you! I have no experience with those 2 cause i've got them as a present. The first days were critical for them cause the cat grabbed the boy but he managed to live, the girl smashed into the mirror and it took her 2 days to recover, then the boy got trapped into a vase for 1 hour (thank god i was looking for him). So right now I'm learning from their behavior, observing them (the girl tries to breed the boy which is weird lol, and the boy knows little about that cause he's barely able to get on top of her). Now they found a new point of interest, my snowbord jacket, where the hood seems to be an excellent nest place. :)) Anyway, I have questions about them, about their well being, so if you have hangouts/google plus or anything look me up @ Luftwaffe673@gmail.com

Sebastian Furnigel Glad to hear your male finch recovered from the cat incident, and your female finch from the mirror accident! As you have a cat in your house, I feel certain that you are now extra vigilant when you let your finches fly about in the room, and then make sure that they are safely back in their cage before you leave the room. Haha thats good! I have a Zebra finch named Skittles, who looks just like Pepe. Skittles has had lots of mates who died due to either being egg bound or getting too cold, and now he is all alone in his cage. They say you should have a pair of zebra finches or else they'll get really lonely and then die. At least, that's what my mom told me once, idk if it's true or not. Do you think thats what would happen? Do you think Skittles will be fine without a partner??
@fradsou8 жыл бұрын
I've been Pepe's caretaker since January 14, 2008 when he was just a fledgling, and so he pretty much thinks that I am one of his flock. There's not a day that passes by without him perching on me to preen or nap. So, I'm guessing he's accepted me as his surrogate bird friend, which could explain why he doesn't exhibit any symptoms of loneliness such as being withdrawn or uninterested in normal bird behavior such as being territorial and building numerous nests all over the room. Anyway, to answer your question, I think it is best to get Skittles a partner since he does have experience in being with other finches, and so he could miss being with another finch and thus get lonely! By the way, love the name you gave your finch - Skittles!!

Thank you for your nice comments and your genuine concern that Pepe could be feeling very lonely as he doesn't have a bird friend :) The good news is that Pepe has not exhibited any of the symptoms characteristic of lonely birds, such as boredom - lack of appetite - lack of inquisitiveness - lack of interest in preening, taking daily baths or sunbathing. Pepe has now been with me for about 7 years, and so I think he has accepted me as his surrogate bird friend since I spend several hours every day working on my main computer that's in his room.

This video has brought me so much joy. :') I have three zebra finches but they are not quite the outgoing type, especially since one of them can barely fly (for unknown reasons). Long story short, my male baby, who looks like Pepe (his name is Mazsi, the Hungarian word for 'Raisin', because of his cheeks) gives me this begging sound every morning, because his twig has fallen out from the cage, and when I push it back, he immediately grabs on it and starts to impress everyone with his sword-wielding skills. ^_^ Wonderful bird you have there, fradsou!

@fradsou6 жыл бұрын
Pepe does give the impression that he is tamed since he is very comfortable with me because I do spend lots of time in his room. His wild instincts are intact, which is why he builds numerous nests, and is so territorial to the point that he will not hesitate to peck me if I do something he doesn’t want me to do, as evidenced in his videos. His behavior is entirely that of his own making. All I really do is give him the freedom to do whatever he wants to do on his own terms, in addition to cleaning up after him, and keeping him supplied with food, water and nesting material. Thanks for watching!

I read the description, you found the bird in a Boy's Latrine? IF so, Where was the Boy's Latrine?
@fradsou8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video and reading the description!! To answer your question, Pepe was found in the late evening of January 14, 2008 (disoriented, hungry and thirsty) separated from his flock in a boy's restroom of an elementary school by the custodian of the school at that time, who immediately made a makeshift cage for him using a cardboard box with paper shavings and with holes punched at the top. That evening Pepe Caliente was brought over to my home, and the very next day I bought a proper cage for him, and ever since then I have been his caretaker and have loved every minute of it!
@levelat3508 жыл бұрын
+fradsou I see. What was your job/ occupation at the elementary school?
@fradsou8 жыл бұрын
I was not an employee at the elementary school. A friend of the custodian brought Pepe to me (because I love birds in general) to shelter him with for that particular night in 2008 instead of leaving him overnight alone at school. Little did they know that I would become Pepe's permanent caretaker! :-))

I have a female zebra finch, tame as yours. She makes many sounds and I wish to understand her better. do you have some sounds of your bird that you understand? can you share some wisdom with me? I would appreciate a lot!!!
@fradsou7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Glad to know you also have a zebra finch because they are so much fun to have! It's interesting how birds can adapt to living conditions specific to their environments, and thus in turn communicate using unique behavior and sounds. I can shed some light specific to Pepe's behavior and the corresponding sounds he makes (as a male zebra finch), some of which may be applicable to your zebra finch. For example, if I get too close to his stuff, he will hiss in a ready to strike posture to warn me off, and if I don't back off he pecks me with loud screeching sounds. This behavior is documented in his territorial and iPad videos. When he wants his daily spinach, he jumps back and forth between 2 perches, pointing with his beak to the location in his cage where I usually place his spinach. One time his cage door got accidentally shut from the outside, and so he wasn't able to get inside. To get my attention, he flew back and forth (while squawking frantically) between the cage door and my face several times before I finally got the message that his cage door was shut, and needed to be opened. He repeated this same type of behavior at another time when I forgot to put his food tray back into his cage after I had cleaned it, the reason being that I got distracted by a phone call. A couple of times, Pepe squeezed himself into the closed closet door from the top, and when he couldn't get out, he started making loud squawking sounds to let me know he wanted to come out of the closet. Now I leave the closet door open all the time because he likes going in there a lot. A few times he got out of his room by squeezing himself under the small space beneath the door, and the only reason I knew he was out was because I could hear his faint squawking sounds from the other side of the door. I now have an object placed outside his door to prevent him from getting out. When I talk softly to him, he sometimes responds by singing or clicking his beak while wobbling his throat. When he is by the window sill, and he sees large birds such as crows or birds of prey fly by, he emits rapid bursts of warning sounds. I feel confident that eventually you will also understand the sounds and behavior corresponding to the unique circumstances of your zebra finch.

quick question please. I adopted a while zebra finch tonight and the lady said he is a boy. I did some research online already and i read that white zebra finches with a dark red beak is a male and a white zebra with orange beak is a female......do you know anything about it.....I would like to get him a mate, but i want to make sure first with someone that knows it better. thank you for now.
@fradsou10 жыл бұрын
Well, congratulations on your new adoption of a white zebra finch! Sexing white zebra finches just by looking at them can be tricky because both genders could appear to be identical. You know for sure it's a female if it lays eggs, and most likely a male if it sings. Sorry, I don't have a definite answer; however, if the lady told you it's a male finch, then I would assume she must have observed it for quite some time, and so knows what she is talking about, and therefore you could get a female and take it from them to see what develops. By the way, I don't know why your comment was being marked as spam, and so I clicked on a button to approve your comment. Hope that took care of it :)

Hey! I loved your video Are Zebra finches super friendly? Do they bond with their caretakers well?
@fradsou8 жыл бұрын
Thank You for watching and enjoying the video! Since Zebra finches are very social birds, they will especially interact with humans if no other finch is around to keep them company, as happens to be the case with Pepe and me. How much they bond with you really depends on how much time you spend with them on a daily basis. My main desktop computer is in Pepe's room, and so I am in his room a lot which he really likes, and therefore in the process I think he has bonded with me because there's not a day that passes by without him interacting with me and napping or preening on me. And when I do have to be out of town for a few days, I have a relative or friend drop by to spend some time with him so he doesn't get too lonely. Even so, when I do return, he lets me know he missed me by spending more time than usual on me, until he finally gets caught up with his lost daily bonding sessions with me.

Glad to know you have 2 zebra finches as it’s fun watching them live their active lifestyle. Since Pepe is not confined to his cage, I have to be very cautious when I enter or leave his room so that he does not escape into the rest of the house, and I also have to be careful not to accidentally step on him. There is little extra effort needed to clean up after him as zebra finches can be very messy! Thanks for watching and enjoying Pepe’s video! :)

@fradsou5 жыл бұрын
Since Pepe is not a caged bird, he poops just about anywhere in his room. Most of his droppings tend to be in places where he spends a lot of time during the day, like on the windows sills. So at those locations I lay down paper towel in advance to facilitate easy cleanup. At the other places, I just wipe off his droppings with a damp paper towel at least once a day. Pepe enjoys spending time on me to preen and also to take naps, and so every now and then he gives me little presents ;) that I also wipe off with a damp paper towel - Lol. It does take a little extra work to keep his room clean, but for me it’s well worth the effort because his wild behavior outside his cage is so adorable and entertaining. Thanks for watching Pepe’s videos! :))

Currently i have a 6 year zebra finch male thats free to fly around the house likes urs. His partner died about 7months ago, hes health has been slowly going down. Blind in one eye, and rarely eats. Hes not puffy which i know is good and hes not sick, his activities have just gone way down and all he does is sit in his nest or fly out for 30mins. What should i do? I dont want to buy him another partner because of his age
@fradsou8 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about the condition of your male zebra finch :-( I am not an expert on zebra finches, but I do know that zebra finches are very social birds, and so it’s very possible that your finch has been missing his partner terribly. Since your male finch already has had experience living with a partner, I think it will be okay to get him another partner (even though he is 6 years old), and then you can find out if his condition improves for the better. Wish you the best!

Thanks for watching! :) I am no expert on finches, but I can tell you what I personally do in regard to looking after my finch … I regularly clean up after him, and make sure he always has fresh food and water. In regard to taming finches, I really did nothing special to tame Pepe aside from just letting him be himself, and let him approach me when he felt comfortable in doing so. In the beginning, he was afraid of me, but over time as he got accustomed to my presence, he started interacting with me more and more, which is why it may appear like I tamed him. Glad to know you recently got zebra finches because they are so cute and enjoyable. In regard to tips on how to look after them, you might want to check out a book by Hans J. Martin - Zebra Finches (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) - that can be purchased at amazon.com

Where does Pepe use the restroom? Does he go all over the house, or only in his cage?
@fradsou7 жыл бұрын
Pepe goes just about anywhere - in his cage and outside his cage. To facilitate easy cleanup after him, I place paper at his favorite hangouts (such as the window sills and under his cage) to catch his droppings. Thanks for watching! :)

hi just got my couple of zebra finches, now its been over night and they are active and chatting to each other, but I haven't seen that they been eating?!!! and when is the best time to start to hand tame them?? how long to give them time to settle in?!!!
@fradsou10 жыл бұрын
Hi. Well, it's a very good sign that your zebra finches are active and chatting with each other because it means that they have already started to settle in :-) Also, they will eat when they get hungry, so no need to worry about that. One of the distinguishing characteristics of zebra finches is that they do tend to retain a lot of their wild instincts - meaning that they like to do everything on their own terms, and they do not like to be petted unless they were hand reared when they were little. They are however naturally curious, and so they will eventually interact with you by perching on you if you spend enough time with them so that they become familiar with you. As to how soon they decide to perch on you or eat out of your hand really depends on when they decide you have gained their trust, and when they finally do come on you on their own terms, you will then know that you have acquired it. Hope this helps :-)

Where's his mate? Zebra Finches are highly sociable...?
@fradsou8 жыл бұрын
Pepe doesn't have a mate. I've been his caretaker since January 14, 2008 when he was found as a wild fledgling, lost and alone in a boy's restroom. You are correct that Zebra Finches are highly sociable, which is why he likes to preen and/or nap on me several times a day. I think Pepe sees me as one of his flock since I am in his room a lot, especially since I do my guitar practicing in there, and also work on my desktop computer that's in his room. Thanks for watching his video! :)

Awesome video!! do you breed them?
@fradsou9 жыл бұрын
+Stingray Ocean Thanks for watching the video and for your very positive feedback!! To answer your question - No, I do not breed zebra finches. Pepe Caliente is actually my first experience with a zebra finch. He was found as a fledgling in the evening of January 14, 2008 in a boy's restroom of an elementary school. The custodian at that time temporarily put him in a cardboard box until a home could be found for him. Long story short, Pepe Caliente ended up spending that particular night at my home, and ever since then I've been his caretaker and have truly loved every minute of it. :))

(Reply plese ) if a zebra finch has a black bar across their beaks?How old are they?
@fradsou10 жыл бұрын
hesuck masterchiefcool Your zebra finch is the first one that I have seen with a black bar across its beak! As far as I know zebra finches don't start developing black bars across their beak as they get older. Therefore, if a finch has a black bar across its beak (like your finch), you cannot tell how old it is. Hope this helps :)

hesuck masterchiefcool Hi - I am just following-up on my previous comment! The black bar on your finch had to do with it being in the late stages of it maturing into an adult where the color of its beak was changing from black to red. I am sure by now you already found that out :)) I just added this comment so as to better inform anyone else who might read our discussion.

How did you tame him so well?
@fradsou7 жыл бұрын
I really did nothing special to train Pepe Caliente. His behavior is all of his own making! Over the years he has grown accustomed to my presence, and so he is not afraid of me, and since he is a social bird, he interacts with me on his own accord when he feels like it; thereby giving the impression that I tamed him.

I want to know on how to let my zebra finch step up on my finger and let me pet him 🙁 😟
@fradsou7 жыл бұрын
In general, zebra finches don’t like to be petted, unless of course they were hand raised. In my case, Pepe wasn’t hand raised. I became his caretaker after he was found as a fledgling in a boy’s restroom, and so in the beginning he was very scared of me. Since zebra finches are social, they will eventually interact with you after you spend lots of time with them so that they get comfortable with your presence; but even then it will be only on their own terms. In Pepe’s case, he will only come on my body when he feels like it, and even though I’ve had him for so many years, he will fly off if I attempt to pet him. It’s possible your finch may behave differently than Pepe. Hope this helps.

Here’s what I feed Pepe: Kaytee wild finch blend and Kaytee Hi-Cal Grit supplement (detailed information on these Kaytee products is available online). In addition, I also give him organic greens such as broccoli and spinach. Pepe likes eating crushed bits of egg shells, and so I sprinkle them around on the window sills.

Thanks for watching! :) Pepe was not hand-fed. I became his caretaker after he was found as a wild fledging over 9 years ago. It’s just that he has grown so accustomed to my presence, which is why he interacts with me; but, nevertheless he still exhibits his wild territorial behavior as shown in his videos.

Hi! I have a question for you. is that the only finch u have? it will feel lonely if he's all alone with u u can play with him and do whatever u want, but he'll have MORE fun if he has a partner p.s i'm not hating, he's so cute and I have the same exact finch and he's called Oreo
@fradsou8 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes, Pepe is the only finch I have. I became his caretaker in January 14, 2008 when he was found lost as a wild fledgling in a boy's restroom. Pepe has now been with me for such a long time that I think he has pretty much adopted me as his surrogate bird friend because I do spend lots of time in his room. So far, he hasn't shown any signs that are typical of lonely birds, such as plucking their feathers, or showing a lack of interest in preening, eating or building nests or just being plain inactive. Pepe on the other hand shows signs of being a very happy bird on a daily basis, because he loves his freedom of being able to go in and out of his cage whenever he wants, and he merrily chirps away his day while building nests all over the room, eating his greens and millet seed, sunbathing, taking his daily baths, and spending time on me preening or taking naps, and of course, not hesitating to peck me whenever I touch or attempt to touch his stuff! All in all, you are correct that finches in general do need to be with other finches, and thank you for showing concern for Pepe's well being! :))
@Bob-mu2cy8 жыл бұрын
fradsou ur welcome!!!!!!! Well my finch is already tamed ( I know you didn't speak about it) but the problem is that whenever he is outside the cage he just hides in tiny spots and starts calling his friend, Vanilla, she listens to him and goes with him But I think that is MAYBE ok But what I want to tell you is that when we play with both of them too much, we put them together in one cozy place, then they kiss, which is actually cute because they're cute little finches P.s you're welcome!!
@fradsou8 жыл бұрын
Just like Oreo, Pepe also likes to hide in tiny spots - lol! Since Pepe is really not tame, and has his wild instincts intact, I never know where he decides to sleep for the night. Sometimes I see him at dusk in one of his nests in his cage, and then when I return later I find him sleeping somewhere outside in his room. For example, yesterday Pepe slept outside his cage perched on the edge of the cage stand, and the night before he slept in a huge nest he built on the glass table top, and the night before that he slept perched on the iMac cord! By the way, glad to hear that Oreo and Vanilla get lots of human interaction, and also that they enjoy each others company!!

Thanks for watching! Pepe is free to do anything he wants in his room anytime of the day or night. He goes into his cage to eat and drink, and also to sleep for the night in the cage, except in the summer months when it is warmer, he tends to sleep for the night at at various locations in his room. During the daytime, his favorite pastime is to build nests all over the room, and when he's done with that he likes to sunbathe by the window sills or hangout on my computer desk. Hope this answers your question.
