Same. Finally had a reality check when I realized I’m working 130 hours every 2 weeks for a check that an electrician would make in a week, maybe even more.

Good stuff young lady, I’ve been a electrician for about 8 years in California. I noticed you hold your hammer with your hand all the way up the handle , try holding it lower where the grip is and notice how much power you get per swing, just a little tip 👍

Hey boss I’ve been looking to electrician apprenticeships for when I get out the military, there’s one in my hometown and an electrician union as well that a couple of family of family friends told me to look into. From your personal experience do you know if being prior military helps with getting into the apprenticeship (and possibly the union later down the road)? Thank you for your time

@@diegoreyes3201 hey just seen your comment and I was in the same position you was when I got out of the military. I now have my journey license in commercial. A lot of people will say go union first but what I did was went non union and they had a school accredited through the state which actually let me use my G.I. Bill and got paid working as a electrician as well. Best bet for you is to use Indeed and get your name out there being military definitely helped.

Great attitude and fantastic long term opportunities. Was in the trades (carpenter) for a few years and know a women electrician who now owns / operates her own electrical contracting business and doing very well (mostly residential with early growth into apartments and hotel situations). Keep looking for opportunities to move on in the electrical trade and if you see an opportunity to learn a new aspect...take it!

When I was an apprentice we wired a RTM house in -40 weather and man it was cold. Large propane heaters but they only felt good when you are right in front of them. Running the wire was bad enough but when we went to install the wire in the boxes and skin the insulation off wow. We got the house done in a day with 4 of us. Now doesn't say on the wire not to handle below -10 well it did then. Yes there are bad and good days.

Get out of residential and start doing commercial/industrial. It's so much better and you will be a better electrician in the long run. Plus you make more money. Also, learn how to troubleshoot. Installing residential new construction is easy. You can train a chimpanzee to rope a house. Knowing how things work and knowing why things stop working is key to being a good electrician. Pay attention as to how carpenters frame houses, where they double up on 2x4s, how corners are built , etc... it helps if you do any service work and every wall is finished and painted. Pay attention to how the plumbers run their pipes. It helps avoid drilling into something like gas, water, or a vent. I got my union journeyman card for commercial/industrial inside wireman in 1996 local 332 Silicon Valley and in 2013 got my state C10 electrical contractors license in California. Started working for myself and I do residential and commercial service work for about half of my jobs and the other half or more of my work is as the locations electrician on set for all the major film and tv studios and production companies in Los Angeles. I have worked on many Academy Award winning and nominated films for directors like Tarantino , and Spielberg and many #1 and Emmy winning and nominated tv shows. There are many different directions open to an electrician in all kinds of different industries and environments. If you learn the trade well and enjoy it work is a pleasure and the money can be very good.

Man I can remember using a drill like that back in the early days (about 34 years ago, that straight drill will hurt you, a right angle drill is the way to go! That straight drill will hit a nail or get Cockeysville in hole and spin your hands or fingers against a stud, sometimes it pins your finger on the trigger ad it does it! I refuse to get near one of those!!

Im an 18 year old girl and just finished secondary school.Im looking into apprenticeships and an electrician is one of them as someone yourself who’s in one and as someone who has virtually no background with working on sites and just the general lingo of it all (me) do you think it’s difficult to learn and pick up on it or would you recommend any Apprenticeships as a women because Im genuinely lost at what to pick but I know I’m motivated and hard working to do the work, learn and see the results but I just need to be taught it well as someone who doesn’t come from a background of all those type of jobs.

Makes me so happy to hear you’re considering the trade! Sometimes not knowing anything is a good place to start. You can start off on the right foot and be taught how to work SAFELY instead of picking up bad habits. I recommend checking your local IBEW union. Their pre apprentice course that takes a few months to complete takes people just like you and gives them the knowledge they need to start off right, they even find you a placement and job! Good luck on your journey :)

I’ve been a foreman and superintendent in the electrical field for a long long time and let me tell you one bit of advice that any older sparky will tell you take care of your back. Those tool belts become very, very heavy anytime you could take them off do it there’s many ways to do electrical work. Everyone has their own different style. There’s no one way to do electrical work. I don’t care what anyone says. Find your technique that works for you talk to the older Sparkys they will save a lot of time. Trust me, they have certain things that they do that will make your job way faster and it will look better and it would just save you a lot of headaches don’t be scared to talk to them. We all have been an apprentice at one time or another. I always tell my new apprentices there is no such thing as a stupid question. The journeyman on your crew are there to help you and for you to watch them and ask questions.
