I am so excited to see that being an ultrasound technician is a delightful occupation. This is my major and currently, I am taking my prerequisite courses to become an RDMS. I pray every day that God will continue to bring me closer to my dream job. So, I can become an extraordinary register diagnostic medical sonography and provide life changes news to my patients about their pregnancy, etc. I'm planning to work in the ob-gyn department - Congratulations Kristy upon becoming an RDMS, that's an inspiring accomplishment that you have established. You inspiring me :)! I'm very proud of you!

I hate being indecisive ahhhh. For the longest time I wanted to be a nurse or at least do something in health care (ex. radiation therapist or a medical sonographer). After volunteering in the hospital for almost 100 hours, I started thinking that maybe health care wasn't for me. So, that lead me to wanting to be a teacher because I've always been a strong student who loved going to school. But watching these kind of videos urge me to go into health care.. I'm only 17 and it sucks trying to make a decision that will impact the rest of my life.

I always wanted to be an early education teacher because of the same reasons. but I went into healthcare... healthcare is where money is but also where stress is too. so i tried to branch into a least stressful job in healthcare.. ultrasound. you're still young. 17 is when I started my in-depth research into ultrasound. let me know if you need any guidance. its hard when you are young

I am in the exact same boat!! I started out with looking at nursing/rad tech/occupational therapy, but got intimidated by the difficulty of some programs and the competitiveness. I'm also fairly young (19 years old), but still feel completely unsure! I will be shadowing in a hospital soon, so that should really give me a feel for the field. The more you time you can spend in the actual work environment, the better. Giving yourself a couple months to go over the decision also helps. Best of luck with everything!

I’m 27 and let me tell you, YOU HAVE TIME! It’s totally normal to go back and forth on what you want to do! Best advice I can give is dive head first into it! You never truly know what you love until you try it! And if you don’t like it, it’s never too late to do something else! You have time, I promise❤️

2nd year sonography student here. She is so right! I am in school in North Carolina-USA and this is normal life. I just got home from clinical. My shift is 8-530. But I get in early and stay late and come in on Fridays too. Because you must get extra scan time in to be great. Its like playing an instrument. It takes practice. Good luck to all y'all who are in a program now.

Reading more about this career made me very interested in it your video was very helpful. I'm applying to go this fall, would i be successful in a medical career even thought it never interested me as much as it does now and changing my mind from teacher to this what worries me is what if I take my prerequisites and not be accepted to the program :/

Oh girl! lemme tell you bout my life and how I made my decision. I was on the same boat. I wanted to be a early education teacher my whole life, I love kids , I love teaching but my thought was I wasn't going to make money. And me as wel,l medical wasn't for me, I thought it sounded too hard. But thats where the money is right? so i thought bout nursing, I said no thats a lot of work. my mom was a midwife so I was like hmm i like kids, what about babies, then I was like nah too much schooling and stress. Then I thought of hmm whats the middle man, and I found Ultrasound! and it just clicked with me. Boom, I found what I wanted. Even when i was applying I was hesitant on oh should I be a teacher. But now i don't regret it. If you are second guessing teaching, dont do it. don't doubt yourself from medical because its hard. Any career is hard, but if you test out the prerequisites (anatomy, physics) it will give you a idea of what to expect with schooling. You can't control if you get in, BUT you can't know until you find out. And lets say you dont get in, have options that will go hand and hand with your prerequisites like radiology, medical assistant... etc. then try again for ultrasound. its never a "waste of time" if you dont get in. :)

It is a very competitive program but most students get offered a job at their clinicals. so it isn't too hard. Especially since there aren't many people exposed to this field... its a good career to get into.

If I could go back and tell myself something, I would say this: The learning curve is very steep (especially for scanning skills and techniques) and try not to over-stress if you feel you just aren't getting it, we were all in that same boat :) Even now (7 months post grad and working) I still have so much to learn! Basically never forget it takes time and have patience if you feel stuck or like you're not developing abilities fast enough, it will come with time and you will be alright!

I actually go to montgomery college but in germantown! lol . Currently in my 3rd year and as a business major, and I was going into accounting. After actually taking the accounting courses I'm starting to realize I don't think I can do this everyday for the rest of my life. But one thing I have always wanted to do was something within a hospital or just working with health care. I was actually registered as nursing major when I went to school but realized it was way too hard for me. But I've just not starting do research on sonography and I'm really interested in it. Only thing is that I'm already almost finished with my business major, I don't know if switching right now would be the best choice. Im turning 21 in a couple months and it kind of puts me down thinking about how I'm going to be here for longer. Help Me !! :/, did you like the program? since I will most likely being go to MC in rockville for this haha, help me decide!

Great, thank you. I'm considering changing careers and either doing the Diagnostic Medical Sono program or Cardiovascular Technologist. How are you liking your new career? Did you also work during your schooling? Was it easy to find a job and what state are you in? I'm in California now but will probably move to get into a program. Just doing research before deciding. Hi kristy! Your videos are so interesting, I’m super interested in trying for a DMS program in my area but I’m nervous to. I was also an early childhood ed major, then switched to social work, now I’m interested in this field! I’m only nervous because I’m not necessarily the greatest at math/science/physics... would you say it’s pretty important to be good at those things going in? Or do you think someone could adapt and learn along the way? I’m not terrible at them.. i just definitely take a little extra time to understand things than others i guess id say!

I've noticed a strong portion of female techs in this field, is that because of lack of male applications or is it some other reason?
@KristyDMS
@KristyDMS 6 жыл бұрын
I'm actually unsure on why there are more females. Tbh, I think it's because when people think sonography, they think just scanning babies, and oddly guys don't spark an interest in it. Thisfield of work is so much more than that! There are actually 2 other males my track (general track) and a bunch of males in our ECHO and Vascular track of sonography. Theres so many things you can do with DMS. Theres not gender specific tasks or cons in this fields. Males should def apply to this program!

Looks like fun.. I have always wanted to get into the medical field and I wish I did this when I was younger, but it's never to late so they say, I am 37 now and not sure if I should do ultrasound, rad tech or MRI? They all seem great but my goal is to work in a clinic, lab or hospital and I have worked with children of all ages and disabilities. So I honestly could see myself work with children.. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions? Thank you! Fun video btw, looks like you guys are having a blast!
@KristyDMS
@KristyDMS 5 жыл бұрын
different imaging modalities are so unique. if you are looking to not be so hands on, id recommend rad tech and MRI. Im not being bias but with ultrasound you are physically manipulating a transducer with your hand and strength while other modalities are simply pushing buttons behind a machine. Depends on what you think your body can handle

I’m thinking about going going into the sonography program, is it extremely difficult? My stepdad was a doctor and mom is an RN, they would scare me with all the patient horror stories so I decided against going into the medical field. However, Sonography looks like something I would be interested in, what are some of the issues you have to face, if you don’t mind me asking? Thank you:)
@KristyDMS
@KristyDMS 5 жыл бұрын
being in the medical field is a hit or miss for people really. a lot of people dont like rude mean patients but you can't avoid them all ! so can't do much about that. i personally do not have any complaints about sonography. i feel like it is a very less invasive medical field which i like b/c personalally i couldn't deal with full on touching wounds and stuff like a nurse. so thats a plus

As a male, who has had 4 testicular ultrasounds, curious to ask how many males are in your classes. There is a huge deficiency in males in this field. Woman never have to worry about having same gender care as a choice. However male patents are never given the option to have choice of gender in ultrasound exams. Of the 4 ultrasounds I recieved, I got a different female tech every time. Never was I offered a male. The medical field still has a long way to go regarding this issue.
@KristyDMS
@KristyDMS 6 жыл бұрын
There are a few males in the program. mostly in the echo or vascular track. There were 3 males in my program and now there is 1. I do know it is a bit of a struggle to have male techs be in a room doing a Transvaginal exams. they need to always be shadowed by a female. Which I find odd that when a female does a testicular exam is not require to be shadow. but hey the issue needs to be address more like you said. i agree
@jimdoyle4345
@jimdoyle4345 6 жыл бұрын
It all comes down to providing the same modesty, privacy and choice for males, as females get. I'm not saying that females can't do male ultrasounds, but I really think that all the places who hire Ultrasound techs, need to hire at least one male and keep that as a standard. Then if a man feels uncomfortable (and many actually do value their modesty) with a woman doing his ultrasound, they can be assigned the gender they want. Females shouldn't be forced on male patients. Its the same in the Doctor and Nursing field for men. If I see a female doctor, she will always pull in another person to chaperone, and 99% of the time its another female because they haven't hired a male nurse. Its happened to me when I saw a female doctor for a physical. What was a comfortable trusting situation, turned into a very uncomfortable exam. The (female) chaperon didn't turn away when I was exposed either. It actually angered me. I should have declined the exam. I have never heard of two males in with a female in an exam. Doesn't happen. Why then should the opposite happen with a man. Thanks for your insight. Have a great career and thanks for the response. Peace.

It is a really amazing field if you are good at distinguishing something abnormal in something normal. It is an amazing not as stressful job in the medical field. Be sure to PREPARE yourself. Although it sounds easy, but you will need to study. You will need to take a 2 boards exam (physics and DMS) and it will be a lot but if you enjoy it, its not bad. Stay determined if this is what you wanna do! I've been interested in this field since high school and i was driven to get in this program as soon as I was creditable to do it. Started my prerequisite JUST for DMS and I haven't looked back. great choice.

thats so funny cuz I was on the same boat. I was thinking between ultrasound and respiratory. I ended with ultrasound and I love it. The specialities were hard too. I remember I was torn between general and cardio... I was so close to switching to echocardio because I love the heart and how it works. But tbh if you are a general sonographer. you learn echo and vascular no matter what. you can always branch into all specialities and get certified in both. most general sonographers do.

I am a preschool teacher so I am constantly bending over stooping down, my back is killing me. It depends on the program requirements because each program is different by school. For the school I attended, you need college Algebra and Physics/Technical Physical Science and you must pass it with at least a "B" average to get into the DMS program, while other schools require the same courses, but you only need a "C" average to get into the program.

my fav thing about sonography, it really is a challenge with yourself. you get a paper with a possible cause of diagnosis and it is like a finding game to figure out whats wrong with them. you'll see a lot of normal, but once you see something abnormal and be able to document it, it will benefit someone in th future. i also love ob ultrasound, it is so much fun seeing the parents reactions seeing their baby
