Hey friends, thanks for watching! :) May I ask a favor? I'd love to hear what other videos/topics you'd like to see from me! I want to make videos about things that resonate with you and are not just hype, so hearing from you would be incredibly helpful. You can DM me on IG @theKevinShen if that's easier. Thank you so much 😊

I have struggled with social anxiety disorder for almost 10 years and counting. It started when I was 17; and teenage to young adults days were supposed to be filled with lots of fun, parties, amazing adventures and knowing tons of new people without feeling like you're gonna die every single time. I love all these things but my body just doesn't allow me to. It just won't calm down. Imagine all the fun I could have if anxiety wasn't present :')

Kevin, you are giving a very positive perspective about us with social anxiety. it's very heartwarming to get the reassurance that we ought to be kind to ourselves and see that hyperactive amygdala more as our own protective mechanism than we should think of it as a weakness. thank you so much for such insight.

I hella relate. I seem like a normal guy but it's always on my mind and it can be exhausting for me to hang out with other people when my brain is on overdrive. Another aspect of social anxiety is it isn't always in public, I get really anxious when I'm recording my music and voice and have a more difficult time than when I'm not recording. I can get really invested in movies as well to the point where I'm panicking if I don't know what's about to happen. Can't smoke weed even though I've tried dozens of times, pretty sensitive to alcohol as well but not as bad. I've spent so much time trying to figure it out on my own and something I learned is that it's okay to ask for help. I'm starting to get therapy and take medication (hopefully I'll eventually be able to switch off) and I'm for once feeling pretty optimistic.

After three years without a panic attack I experienced one again yesterday. I was with a group of people I didn’t know with an already empty social battery. My social anxiety hasn’t been this bad for a long time, and yesterday I felt weak and stupid for loosing all control again. I got home and felt so alone and misunderstood. Then I found your video and just cried. I was so relieved knowing I am not alone with this and there are people out there experiencing similar struggles. We are so strong and we are doing our best! Thank you so much Kevin for saving me last night🤍

You got me tearing up😭. It's so true that it's hard to be able to go somewhere or do something because of anxiety and with these days lately having to make bigger sacrifices to accomplish my goals and dreams it's gotten more intense because of what's ahead of me. I've been working as hard as I can to make it through college to become a person who can help others, and at first I wasn't sure exactly what I should become, but with some help and some changes I've realized I truly to want to become a clinical psychologist. So to do this ofc I need a doctorates. It's a long road ahead of me and even though I'm almost done with my bachelor's there's so much more I have to do to be able to make my dreams come true so it's pretty overwhelming when it comes to looking for an apartment, living away from family, learning how to deal with finances, building money for retirement, finding true love and someone who will truly care for me. All these things are hard to think about all at the same time, and I think "When will it all be over? All the stress and all the worries. All the restlessness and hurt that I go through just to survive." I also have ADHD combined type and it makes it extremely difficult just to function throughout the day. I've been going to therapy for about 5 months now and seeing a psychiatrist but it's only now that I'll be taking a new medication that I hope will help. It's Strattera 25 mg. If this one doesn't work then I'll just have to move onto the next one and the next.

Video ideas: (topics I’m curious about, that you might also want to explore) - Romanticism. The value and importance we put on romantic relationships, and not all other relationships. Maybe explore the idea that instead of finding the best partner and put effort into that one relationship, people should strive towards creating a strong inner circle of different relationships that support and meets our needs, rather than just one person. (Alain de Botton and School of Life has interesting videos about this) - How western cultures tend to value individualism and independence way more than family values and loyalty. How it affects us to have these values way out of balance, and maybe look at the pros and cons of being on either side of this spectrum. - What connecting with others really mean. That it’s not necessarily conversations, amount of time spent together, common interests etc. That it might be “the energy between people when they feel seen, heard and valued, when they can give and receive without judgement”, empathy, supporting others out of unconditional goodwill, sincere gratitude and empathy, being authentically yourself and honest. And my belief is that being vulnerable and willing to reveal our flaws and shortcomings, is the best way to create intimacy and connection with others.

Me: Goes outside my backyard to play with my Sonic Plushies or Roleplay something by myself. My Social Anxiety: Everyone is looking through their windows looking at you through your backyard and judging you, and thinking your weird. Also me: alright! Time to go back inside and play inside!

I wish more people understood this. I am not sure they ever will. There are 1000s of people suffering but there are also 1000s who claim to have these kind of issues and really don't. It makes it impossible to paint a accurate picture for doctors. If they get ten explanations they get ten different pictures. And some are simply people who rather be alone or even some who have no issue at all but it gets attention. Your description was the most accurate I have seen from anyone. Of course different people do have slightly different experiences, but overall that was perfect. I have avoidant personality disorder and panic disorder. I live in my room and very rarely leave. Even going out of my room to get to the bathroom is hard at times. But on the occasion that I do go to the store or even my yard I feel exactly what you just described, usually followed by a panic attack. I have no idea why, I have not always been this way. Honestly it is so bad at times I hear people talk about the world ending or Russia and nukes and I wish for it. I got all the equipment to make videos and software. And a whole studio to do music or voice overs, and I can't even do that because somthing just keeps telling me no somthing will go wrong. Sorry that was a bit winded.

SAD/SP can seriously interfere with your life if it's severe enough. It can stop you from ever achieving many of your personal & professional goals. I appreciate your effort & thank you for talking about it, but this video shows a mild manageable view of what is SAD/SP or perhaps shyness. ...and if SAD/SP is compounded with other disorders & phobias, it can be monster my friend. Stay well!

Pretty relatable here :) I think it's pretty common, not because we all are full of anxiety, but perhaps because we are humans who fumble with starting interactions :) Basically, we just get into our own heads!

I am socially anxious as well. Of course I go out, have fun with friends and I have attempted to go to clubs also. My friends got my back and were always around me so I felt safe. I can get accustomed to a situation quickly so I don't "seem" like somebody with social anxiety. But there's also that fear and even right now I'm dreading going to grab food because of it.
