Been looking for a perspective like this. I am glad I came across this video. Matty’s lyrics and Taylor’s have so many parallels. It was mad. Thanks for this! I love both of them. They’re different and they were so in love. Looking forward to the 1975’s next album and hoping he will definitely respond to TTPD.

I think what I wrote is simply me being a little bit of a romantic and hoping that it was love and they didn’t work out because of outside pressures. Fandom wars , death threats, villainising of one person and threatening to quit following the other person for things they believe the partner did. But that’s just a strain of thought. It could very well be delusional and perhaps they did have highly romanticised notions of each other from afar.

I also think right where you left me is about matty too like the lyrics "She's still 23 inside her fantasy" she was 23 in the 1989 era where they first connected. and with "If our love died young, I can't bear witness" i take it as: "we never had a real chance at a relationship because you met someone else, so i'm stuck here thinking of what could have been if you had stayed with me"

A couple of other parallels I noticed... In that clip where he says he isn't going to kiss anyone in front of Taylor Swift, he says to show some respect, because he isn't going to kiss anyone else "In front of the queen" In TTPD, Taylor writes: "Cause once your queen had come, You treat her like an also-ran" In Falling For You, the lyrics say, "You said some day we might When I'm closer to your height, Till then we'll knock around and see If you're all I need" Which reminds me of TTPD: A message to the smallest man who ever lived And not a parallel, but as many times as Taylor referred to her love with Joe as "gold", I wonder if the "tattoed golden retriever" line was talking about Matty bringing back that sense of a love that was fated to be, retrieving the golden love she had lost.

It’s interesting to me that people are so surprised that the majority of this album is actually not about Joe like that makes perfect sense to me. Whatever actually happened between the two of them what we know for sure is he wanted to remain private throughout their relationship and I can’t see her MAJORLY exposing him after five to six years together unless he did something truly awful and unforgivable.

TTPD is her taking accountability for their issues and folklore/evermore/midnights is her telling us about what Joe did to lose her… we already had the pieces of the puzzle. How did it end, loml and so long London was really all we need. I think my boy only breaks his favorite toys is about joe as well but it’s playful?? If that makes sense. Okay we need to talk about Harry in this early time frame too. We know she was off and on with him for at least 18 months. And in the song ‘is it over yet’- she clearly talks about having romantic dalliances with other guys while they were on and off and I think Matty could have been one of the guys she was maybe having heavy romantic flirtations and maybe more at that time. So Matty and Taylor could say they didn’t date each other - ‘that never happened’ because it was in both their interests to say that.

Taylor & Harry weren't on and off after their breakup. That's an assumption created by Haylors based soley on song lyrics, mainly "Style." One Direction had world tours EVERY YEAR, plus promo, recording new albums, etc. Harry was in the UK in Jan/Feb 2013 for tour rehearsals after their breakup. 1D's 2013 world tour was from Feb 23 - Nov 3. Harry dated Kendall Jenner from Nov 2013 - early 2014. Taylor was on her own Red world tour in 2013 and into 2014. Taylor said she wrote "Style" in Feb 2014. Harry & Taylor were in the same cities at the same time for maybe a dozen days at this point, mostly because of award shows. After 1D's 2014 world tour, Harry dated Nadine Leopold from Nov 2014 until 1D's 2015 tour started in Feb. How could Taylor & Harry have an on/off relationship when they were rarely in the same cities at the same time? If they did, they were off 98% of the time. The on/off was in 2012. (They met March 31 at the KCAs and liked each other. 1D flew to Australia a little over a week later to resume their UP All Night Tour. That summer, Taylor dated Conor Kennedy, then Taylor & Harry were on/off dating from Oct 2012 - first week of Jan 2013). Taylor dated Conor between two times with Harry in 2012. Harry dated other woman during that time also. It's the 2012 timeline referenced in her songs, not after. The few songs Taylor wrote about Conor could be the "I don't want to hear about him" lyric.

Have you guys yet fathomed all the reputation album references to Matty? And the fact that gold/golden is likely about HIM and not Joe? All those songs we couldn’t place that people thought were about Karli…. Like ‘Dress’ is SO Matty coded especially “you left your mark on me, a golden tattoo” and then in TTPD hes a “tattooed golden retriever”?!!! Also in Dancing with Our Hands Tied (OBVI about Matty and fame) “my love had been frozen deep blue but you painted me golden”. 16:28 some Taylor swift fans got offended by what he said but I don’t think he was trying to shade her- just throw people off the scent (red herring)… sounds like they dated but wanted to keep it on the DL which is actually on brand for her, she tends to keep it under the radar as long as possible. We learned later that Travis and Taylor had been going out for a while before she started showing up to his games and we saw them leave together. I think he was quoted as saying “come on would we really let you all in on our first date” (kinda reminds me of ‘no you’re not coming to the wedding)… she moves in stealth. And he wasn’t ready for that kind of fame so they… moved fast and kept quiet. (So to speak) It’s not really offensive what he said it wasn’t because he was ashamed of her but just cuz they were trying to throw off suspicion. (I had a thing going with a coworker once and when they asked him about me he told them I was annoying. Lol. from everything i gathered from this album, she felt coaxed out of her dying relationship, with promises of forever, just for him to use her for selfish reasons. sex and exposure. when he caught heat, he left. despite her saying she was willing to endure the shitstorm from his actions. as a swiftie and a 1975 stan i cant condone his actions. im disappointed in him and how ppl have tried to twist his actions into some sort of sob story. I know Taylor. I own several Midwest radio stations. I first met her at age 16 in Nashville before famous and no one knew who she was. Feb 2006. She had a thing for my good looking son. Love your analysis. I don't like her choice of 1st single Fortnight and to also kick off the album. On any other TS album it would be a mid track. Truth. But I love the whole 31 tracks here except for a couple I'll skip. Down Bad.. Florida.. Fresh Out.. Never liked Matty. I still think he's beneath her and kind of sketchy.
