It has pleased me greatly to have received further communication from the person who sent in this clip, and he has agreed to me posting parts of his response. Remember we all make mistakes and some more serious than others, so when no one is killed or injured quite often little is learnt. This scenario is totally different. If you have seen any traits of yourself in this video perhaps you will be honest enough with yourself and commit to change. The Drivers Response "I’ve now seen the your analysis on KZbin. It has hit me hard and given me a wake up call. I had expected you to be critical of the driving and I agree with everything you mention. The standard of driving and choices were extremely poor and retrospectively a moment of madness which is not the norm. I thought the clip being so ‘full’ and unusual warranted sending to you and fully expected your roasting. What I could not anticipate however, is how strongly reading the viewer’s comments would resonate within me. I am deeply ashamed, embarrassed and saddened. Realising how cataclysmically unacceptable the clip is to the viewers and how strong the feelings are has left me shocked and mortified. I’m not someone who is in anyway comfortable with upsetting people and I had not ruminated on this before. Some comments mention accidents or deaths that they’ve experienced, so I hang my head in shame and if I had the guts, would apologise to each of them. This has and will certainly have a resounding effect on me going forward. In the past, such driving would have been rare but now absolutely never. Any illusion I had of being safe or good is now shattered. I’m appreciative of the wake up call, realising how selfish the use of the roads was, but overall simply ashamed. It’s given me a lot to think about but rethinking not just driving but life attitude is foremost."

Well, what can I say to a guy that has admitted that he was wrong, especially after I had slated him. It takes a man to admit that they are wrong and what this video has done "hopefully" is to show other what people think of driving like that. I admit that when I was young, I was always spinning and screeching wheels "showing off really" because I was seventeen years old and had a Zephyr Six convertible that I had rebuilt the engine to a higher level than standard. I cant say that I drove recklessly and I did not have any accidents but I was always trying to impress people. I drive at the proper speed limit now and I am very careful, I am much older and much wiser, I am also more critical and tend to forget that I was a bit of a boy racer. These video`s probably do quite a bit of good because people will see what their driving is like when other people are affected by it. Great response from this driver and honest to a fault.

Ashley - Perhaps you could do something on overtaking technique. I think I'm not alone in thinking "Roadcraft" is not right in some of its discussion on the subject and I'm thinking specifically about moving from the "following" position (2 second rule etc) to the unfortunately named "contact" position which implies that you run, however briefly, at something significantly less than 2 seconds from the "target" vehicle. From your comments on this video I suspect you are also not in agreement with "Roadcraft" on this point. I would love to hear your thoughts on this and indeed the whole overtaking process.

When making these videos, can you please not name the video “deluded view” or something referring to being “deluded” because it can sometimes be demoralising and a little offensive for some people plus you never know if the view in question has a mental disorder or not. Just because you don’t think that what the driver did was good or not while the driver thinks opposite does NOT mean they are “deluded”, everyone will think differently to it.

Alternatively, drive every journey as though either the rozzers or an insurance company are going to be going over every moment leading up to an incident, and noting every little thing you're doing wrong. Sure dashcams are mostly bought by people for their own protection, but you drive stupidly with one and you'll be the one in the dock with your own evidence used against you.

The reason I like your videos is because as someone who passed his test in 1968 I fell into the trap of thinking what a great driver I am, by watching videos like this I can see what terrible and dangerous bad habits I have picked up over the years and that I am in fact pretty crap, so I'm amending my driving every time I go out after watching a vid. Mee too, its hard to admit we make mistakes, mine is I'm too fast, I try slowing down but then get people pulling out on me or switching lanes infront of me so i revert to going fast again to keep away from these drivers who usually seem to never indicate too. I recall seeing a poster, when I was stationed at RAF Brize Norton, warning against car hopping. The point was that high risk, high anxiety manoeuvres gain you nothing if all you do is move several cars further ahead but you're still behind cars. Why not chill out and wait until the cars in front either turn off or you reach a length of dual carriageway. Patience is a virtue.

This very reason is what stopped me from driving like a dick. I could dangerously overtake one HGV on the A17 just to be stuck behind ten more. It was a losing battle. Then as soon as I got onto the A1 I’d be stuck in a traffic jam near Doncaster anyway . So driving like a dick got me nowhere. It made very little difference to my journey time.

@Ben c well said, his average speed over those 280m was in excess of 78 mph. If his entry speed was 60mph his terminal speed would be easily into the 90's, is it little wonder the bikers were caught out, not that they should have been overtaking on a bend.

An interesting thing is that there are closed private courses for people in car/bike clubs to "play" in and reduce their risks, as well as those to others. When you look at the overall cost of their hobbies, I think we know why this is done on public roads. Not impressed.

Yeah, I think Ashley gives him too much credit for his road positioning, he wasn't out in the centre for a better view of the road ahead... he was out in the centre due to impatience and the must-get-ahead mentality. Good attitude. Gesture gently for them to pull back and thank them if they do - works most times in my experience. If they don’t, try and pull over safely as soon as you can to get out of the danger zone. No use brake testing or antagonising them, you’ll just make them drive in an even more dangerous manner.

As I have grown older I have become more and more aware of how dangerous the roads can be and it's frightening to think that motorists (myself included, though as rarely as possible) are so close to killing others. When I see a motorist driving irresponsibly or in a manner that could endanger others it really makes me very defensive.

He said it in the email, he’s “experienced at track driving”... so get your speed fix on a track where it’s as safe as possible in a controlled environment, not out on a public road where there are so many hazards... Other drivers, motorbikes, cyclists, pedestrians, wildlife etc. What if he went round one of those bends and there were some sheep out or a tractor trimming the hedge rows? A work pal of mine hit a badger on the M6, at 70 MPH it was not good news. Car written off, car ended up off the motorway and several months before he was back at work.. Oh and yes badger deceased, I would expect more wild life on a country road and have had deer and horses run out infront of me. I missed them just, but the animal that caused the most damage to my car was at night and that was a pheasant. Straight throgh the grill and stuck in the radiator.

That was my thought. I have always wondered how people get away with having sat nav's, phones and dash cam's mounted on their windscreen obstructing large areas of vision when a car will fail its MOT for having a chip the size of a 5p in the sweep of the wipers? Surely it must be illegal?

When you get behind people and move to the right to show you intend to overtake - it does put pressure on them. It makes them look more in their mirror and not ahead. It can also makes them feel pressured to close their own stopping distance they left in front of them.

Close up the stopping distance? When I see somebody behind me who is obviously intent on overtaking, I start dropping back off the car in front, to make sure there’s plenty of space for the overtaker to pull into safely.

From the engine note, it is clear he was accelerating hard over that 280m. So at the moment when he hit the right-hander (while on the wrong side of the road) - he was doing more than the 78mph total average speed over that distance.

I guess that if he started at around 50ish before putting the power down then by time he reached the end of the straight it would be 100+ mph, this could average around 80mph so that makes sense

@@nearlyretired7005 all depends on the person you speak to. some drivers think because they do 50mph in a national speed limit they a good driver but they do 35 to 40mph in a 30zone which is not a good driver at all. some drivers fail to make progress and go slow for the road they are on which makes them think they are a safe driver but by backing up traffic they are causing a danger else where for someone else. Advanced lessons and training is very useful to be a better driver but some drivers that learn them become more dangerous as over confident. most important thing is if your going to drive risky, make sure its safe for other road users and safe for people in the vehicle with you.

The frequent and inappropriate centreline driving illustrates a problem I have with a lot of people who like to bang on about their level of driving *ahem* acumen... He's not doing it because he's analysed the situation and made a conscious decision to pull that tool out of his bag to maximise safety. He's doing it because it was mentioned as a technique somewhere, probably once, and he's decided that by doing it at every opportunity he can wear his Road Captain stripes with pride. I won't bore you with the details but I've seen plenty of arbitrary rules invented in the heads of IAM members, when you know that what they've done is witnessed someone demonstrating "you CAN do this if it is safe and helps" but heard it as "DO THIS ALL THE TIME!"

In my case it was partly because of the "replace one set of arbitrary rules with another set of arbitrary rules that make me special" types, but there was a worrying number of members who couldn't accept the need to mitigate the potential to make a mistake themselves. Maybe it's my age, but it frightens me when someone speeds down the road towards me passing within just a few feet, sometimes inches. It's get's so close sometimes that my car is buffeted by the compression of air as we pass and I know that if we were to have a head-on crash that no one would survive. I wish people would consider how it makes other drivers feel when speeding down narrow roads. It puts the bejesus up us and despite what people see on programmes like TopGear and various YT channels, there is no room for spirited driving on any public road. That's what race tracks are for.

I am an engineer and worked in automotive crash safety for a period of time. It gave me an appreciation of speed, as that is the biggest factor to how much energy is in a collision. This energy needs to be dissipated by the vehicle in order to protect any occupants. The energy that needs to be dissipated is kinetic energy, for which the formula is half x mass x speed squared. The speed squared is key, as this means that it has a huge factor on the amount of kinetic energy your car has. For example a 1 ton car driving at 30 mph has 90 kj of energy. Same car driving at 42.5 mph has 180 kj, so only 42% extra speed is twice the energy. A head on collision with both cars doing the 60 mph speed limit is likely to result in serious injury and death, driving much faster than that is going to decrease any chances of survival, no matter how many track days you've done.

I fitted a camera to my pushbike about 10 years ago because of "interactions" with motor vehicles on my commute and it ended up teaching me about myself. I still feel I was competent with my sprinting and overtaking on shared paths at a time when I was quite physically fit, and would hope that if things went pear-shaped, I would have been able to avoid harming other path users, but I realised that it wasn't fair to be heading towards people at speed in that environment even if I ruled out a worst case scenario. It caused me to remember my upbringing as primarily a pedestrian. In later years, cycling took off in a big way locally and nearly all my issues were with the behaviour of other cyclists around me and other human beings.

As someone who is by profession required to take extreme risks in traffic, I'd like to mention that if you take a risk knowingly, you also take the consequences. Today we practiced ignoring red lights. If you take a risk you need to be sure. Not 99% sure, but 100% sure. At least on the IAM motorcycle and on bikesafe, the accepted convention is to "make progress" during NSL sections. Considering bikesafe you are typically accompanied by a police biker. I know many a blind eye has been turned to some speed in NSL sections. That said if you rode like this twat drove (up the arse of cars and careless overtakes) you'd have been flashed and brought over in a split second to have a "discussion". IAM and RoSPA taught me to "use the road" so I will cut corners straight to maximise vision, but only when necessary (e.g. it's a twisty bit of road and having visibility of the road surface ahead is far more important than maintaining my position in the carriageway as it's clear of traffic) But hanging out across the lines for no good reason and pressuring drivers, no just no. You make progress by being smooth and by applying some thought and observation. Not by snapping/stamping on the throttle.

Spot on with the analysis, Ashley. I knew a bloke who was a pretty good MotoGP rider and when challenged about his style of driving on the road replied, "I'm safer at 90 than most drivers at 30 (mph)." You wouldn't have thought that if you were in the passenger seat, I can tell you. You can have all the training and 'acumen' in the world but rule one is Leave the ego at home. As soon as I read the missive, I knew this bloke hadn't done that. Also, my one and only speeding ticket was for 69 in a 60 (NSL) while overtaking. There is no defence - though perhaps because I've driven in countries where you can break the limit briefly to pass another vehicle, I was under the misapprehension that I could do it in Britain. You can't. Also, long lines mean there's a hazard ahead - I always wait for the shorter lines, though I know many don't.

It always interests me that track day experienced riders/drivers think those skills are directly transferable to the roads, when in fact the two sets of skills required are completely different. Try using Ashley’s techniques on the track and you will be last to the finish, try using track techniques on the road and you will probably not be around long enough to learn the road craft needed to stay safe.

And you don't need high torque in all situations when you cruise in a relaxed way. I'm used to this bit of road - it's one of those roads with sections that you can enjoy doing the speed limit along if there is no other traffic around. In the past, I have detoured to go to Chichester in order to have the more enjoyable route. You do sometimes get Mr Forty on that road as well - we know them, we love them... Posted limit is 40, they do 40. Posted limit is National, they do 40. Posted limit is 30, they do 40. There does seem to be a trend on roads that attract Mr Forty for people to do some spicier overtakes. One of the other roads to Chichester had 3 (now realistically 2) places along a several mile stretch that you an overtake Mr Forty. This will influence the decision for people who know the road to overtake in those places as there is a "now or never" factor in play. Of course it is usually the way that going through the windy double white line sections, there are no oncoming vehicles and as soon as you get to the arrow straight long section a platoon of oncoming cars appears, and then it is completely clear again in the next bendy section. Of course this is not trying to justify poor decisions, but to understand some of the process behind them.

I think I used some choice words when he did that second overtake especially. I can kind of see the moving out for a better view right before an overtake, but doing it when there is no chance of an overtake just puts pressure on other drivers. Ash often makes the point in relation to Learner Cars that you should overtake in the manor you would a police car, which if he was moving out for no apparent reason, would certainly land him in trouble. We were following an unmarked police car back along, at a glance you couldnt tell. You would have to look very close to see it, and they lit up someone who shot past them. Its not worth it. This sort of driving is what makes the roads unsafe, and I think this cammer should really reconsider the manor they drive in, and how this can affect others. Take what the further training actually taught you on-board, rather than doing it for the sake of saying you've done it, and then driving like this. You're just asking to be ripped to shreads in the comments, and even lose your liscense by driving like that. Even mentioning that they drive on a track also makes them look worse, as they clearly understand where its safe to have more fun driving, and where you should be having fun within the limits of the road. Hopefully, this makes them change their ways and opens their eyes. This clip woudln't have been so action packed if the cammer didn't drive like they own the roads. If the cammer is reading this, think, if you were to injure or kill someone and this as the manor you drove in, what would happen? Still think it's worth the risk? Sorry for the essay. For me that isn't just about speed, but also takes conditions into account. However, I would suggest that 'spirited' driving/riding is not beyond a reasonable tolerance of the speed limit, which I guess technically means it could be illegal at times, but far from always.

I have binged watched a lot of your videos over the past couple of days and most helpful tip I've found so far is to make sure you have space around you at all times. I always rushed to get going once the traffic lights changed to green without assessing what others were doing just cause I had it ingrained in me that if I didn't go the second lights turned green I would get beeped at, glad I found your channel and will hopefully get into good habits while I'm still new to driving. I also bought a dash cam to assess my own driving, however when I play the footage back the rear and front are separate clips, do you use video editing software to view front and back footage together or any specific viewers or is it just the way your dash cam plays it back? I can echo every sentiment from his email, I've done skid and high performance driving courses at Goodwood, Brands Hatch, Donington and Bedford, but I would never drive like that on a public highway unless it was a dire emergency.

I actually guessed where it might be from the initial description including mention of bikes: this road and the area slightly west (A32/A272) are bandit country for enthusiastic (over enthusiastic) bikes and cars pressing on. But the traffic levels and mostly twisty bits (the road just before the section shown) make it a high risk game of chicken which isn't worth it. Used to live in Fareham, & go to Chichester regularly so know the road well, but wouldn't ever contemplate the overtakes or speed he was doing.

For an overtake on a straight road to be safe you need to be able have it done before you are half way along the straight, because a car could appear from the opposite direction just as you commit. In the first overtake he managed that but in the second he had two cars to overtake and was only just completing by the corner, which is too late. Incidentally the second bike also committed a big mistake - never follow another vehicle overtaking something. If another car (our cammer in this case) appears coming towards you, the lead bike pulls in the gap leaving the second bike stuck on the wrong side of the road. Happily the bikes co-operated and they both got in, but they too only just completed their overtakes by the corner rather than halfway along the preceeding straight.

@@JGreen444 it's some sort of kit car , Most have small supermini engines and very light weight , They can accelerate if they want to but most are happy enjoying the experience at normal speeds. As this guy should have been.

On my Astra that was the best place for it. All it obscured was the bonnet, not any of the road at all. On the right it would obscure the road, and anywhere else it would get in the way of the controls or displays.

@@konradgreen2567 I had an Astra GTC for 7 years and it tucked in perfectly on the right hand side, even there though it was pointed out that it would fail an MOT. Your not allowed to put anything on your window if it’s on the part the wiper goes over.

Hi Ashley, I am nearly 70 and a retired JP. I am shocked, along with the other commenters, on the speed, the positioning, and the near reckless overtaking in this clip. If the traffic police agree with your estimates, Ashley, they would without doubt proceed with prosecutions (plural). The fact that our driver has “seen the error of his driving” is good news, and I applaud his comments. What was the closing speed of our driver with that of the motorcyclist? Whatever it was there were only seconds to spare, death comes quickly in these circumstances! I have spoken to many bereaved relatives who have lost loved ones through speed, poor judgement, and testosterone! It is wise to remember that accidents change lives, and they take lives BUT they can never be undone no matter how much we regret our actions. Many thanks for sharing this clip. I sincerely hope it makes a difference to all our driving habits

Nice that the driver developed some self awareness. Credit to him. I've been has guilty and has deluded. I was a very highly trained advanced driver. Still, even so, our team had crashes at times. Speed is always dangerous, especially when you think your a highly skilled driver!!!

I used to boy race a bit for lights and such, but the experience of driving unhurried, not racing to meet the speed limit or to beat lights but also not moving off sluggishly, is very relaxing and satisfying. You can also be fairly smug about the quality of your driving.

@@wabznasm9660 In the end at the next set of lights/junction/roundabout they are normally about 215 feet in front of you, so no gain in reality.Just like those who overtake then slow down, indicators on to turn right and have to stop for oncoming traffic holding you up.

@@zaink7037 I agree, it's about respect and there are people who drive so awfully slow (way under speed limit) and try to teach others for their "speeding" that it's disrespectful to everyone else, especially on roads where overtaking is impossible. There are such people who are like this and I'm glad to get rid of those by overtaking in safe situations. And no, these people don't catch up on the next traffic light, because they actually drive THAT slow.

When he said "I am an experienced road and track driver". I instally thought this comes into the Dunning Kruger effect where people who are below average at something, rate themselves as above average at something. We can clearly see from the footage his driving standards are below average, but he honestly believes he is a good driver, hopefully this video will give him a chance to re-evaulate his driving.

I don't think it's Dunning Kruger. His driving ability is probably better than most, but his driving standard is worse. Someone who can drive acceptably on a track but lacks maturity can easily fall into this trap. They know how to drive their car and it gives them more confidence to drive fast and a higher risk tolerance, potentially leading to dangerous situations. It's kind of like a marksman who can shoot a target from 1000 yards but walks around with his finger on the trigger and safety off. He's a skilled shooter and has a right to he confident, but doesn't keep to a good standard.

@@Gerishnakov This is the case for everyone and every entity that makes a safety decision though, governments enforce their own safety ideals on you and me right now. Not all flaunting of a safety rule impacts someone other than the person breaking the rule. Take for example a motorcyclist who decided against wearing a helmet, such an act would be illigal yet he only risks his own helath.

@@piciu256 More power also means you can complete an overtake more quickly, so can actually be safer. Accelerating out of trouble is something I've had to do on a motorbike. Might be worth a video, Ash?

@@GilesWendes yes, but only if you have not enough power, this definitely isn't the case. He just starts to accelerate pretty late, that's why the maneuver takes so long- another issue with following too close.

If the driver of the Ariel Atom thinks he hasn't got enough acceleration for the overtake then pretty much nothing has. What is missing here is not acceleration but the ability to see round corners.

I agree completely with your analysis. Those who are best public road drivers are fully aware of their limitations of skill (whatever that level is), and aware that like everyone, concentration lapses from time to time. The best protection against these lapses is leaving plenty of space in front.

What I found interesting was the second overtake (the kit car): The camera shows we were approaching and following through a sweeping left curve and the driver is sitting in the middle of the road. Had the road position been to the left we would have been able to see the road ahead passed the nearside of the vehicles and got a better overall picture of the road ahead, rather than practically nothing. I don't think this driver read Roadcraft, but maybe there's another Advanced driving manual that I don't know about in will probably avoid based on this.
