Used to do this regularly when I worked in an ER back in the 1960s. In a worst case scenario, though, we had a special instrument designed for cutting off rings.

It would have if your hand was swollen, but better short pain and discomfort than having to have your finger amputated from gangrene.

​@@amandahunter4034 Every ER and almost every physician's clinic has a ring cutter for situations when tricks like this don't work. Nobody ever loses a finger that way, just their ring. And the ring can generally be repaired.
