Lee Smith what a retarded statement. Storms like this have been happening since water existed on this planet. Seriously, does every single little storm that happens is linked to “global warming” now? When I lived across the bay at Rivière Towans in one of the bungalows on the headland I remember watching a big southerly storm. There were 30-40 coastal ships sheltering in the lee of St Ives island and they were disappearing down to their masthead lights in the swell-this would have been mid to late 1970’s. The waves were breaking on Hayle bar at high tide and the beach break was throwing sand onto our roof which was probably 60-70 feet above the beach!

why dont they put riprap along the bottom of the seawall or out a few yards to break the blunt force a bit. It might make the sea wall last a bit longer.
@Cornishpastyman3 жыл бұрын
I imagine there are 2 or 3 reasons, the main one being that this is just a spectacle that doesn't cause any problems. The wall is very secure and good for a very long time yet. Then there is what would cost, as it would need serious foundations. And then how it would look, in terms of spoiling the view in what is a conservation area.

Why don't they make some sea walls in front of that shore? Those waves are pounding with their full force against that wall. Sooner or later it will crumble and some buildings can collapse in the sea.
@Cornishpastyman8 жыл бұрын
That wall/walk was built in 1930 and shows no sign of serious wear an tear. We get seas like that around 8 times a year. In the end, without some maintenance, the sea would win but if it ever was badly damaged it would be quickly fixed. Building another wall in front of it would be very costly and look ugly.
@Snowwie888 жыл бұрын
Looking ugly? Who cares about that. Isn't it safety first? Or does this place consider these 'storms' and tiny floods a tourist attraction of some sort?

You are way too close filming this ....terrifying.......the back surge will knock those people off their feet and they will slide into that raging sea to be lost forever
@Cornishpastyman4 жыл бұрын
In general your point about people getting too close is very well made. As it happens I filmed this well away from the wave, standing on a bench and sheltered by a building (The Arts Club) so was in no danger even of being splashed.
@livetwice77024 жыл бұрын
Cornishpastyman thank heaven for that 👍
@Cornishpastyman4 жыл бұрын
@@livetwice7702 Yes but... I put that image as the thumbnail for this video because although people running through the spray has gone on for years (me included when I was young) and is safe nearly all the time, occasionally it is very dangerous, like when there is a wall of water like that. The girl watching is in no danger but had anyone been hit by the water in front of the gallery they would be killed instantly, smashed against the granite. They would not be pulled back into the sea as there is no backdraft because the sea is well below the height of the wall. So this must not be done when the high tide is say over 17 feet. But it will, of course.
@Olympicspirit3 жыл бұрын
Must be scary living in that place, such huge waves. Who on their right mind would live in a house next to those scary waves?
