This may not work long term BUT I think it's amazing what a family can make work when trying to live in a certain location. Some people due to work opportunities can't afford to live in a big space, so this is just another way families are making it work without letting the hard housing market get to them. This gives me hope for living in San Francisco with my family🤗

From someone who has raised small children in a smaller than usual (for the US, that is) space, I will say that hands down, the most challenging part was that children can be "stuff" magnets. Especially if they are attending any sort of school outside the home---papers and crafts and birthday party loot on top of gifts from friends & family, etc. They can easily accumulate not just more than they need, but more than they will even use, wear, or look at. We'd regularly sift through all of that & pass some along in order to keep it manageable.

Taking away the dish holder, seeing that it's empty, would free up a lot more space. There are foldable dish drainers where once your dishes are dry you put them away and you fold up the dish drainer and you put that away. It's only really needed to dry the dishes. Much more counter space that way. Also, getting rid of that lamp and opt'n for under cabinet lighting would *free up that space* and give you the same esthetic if not better.

Nice space, with some good ideas. Totally agree with building "up" - and things look nicer than everything at a low level. Personally, I would not use a glass, frameless, and therefore very breakable, mirror, with toddlers, for safety reasons for the kids. Nor would I use jute for the girls’ room, and no, as someone with jute rugs, they are not comfortable. Our cats won’t even walk on our jute rugs. Storing books with the spines hidden, and pages facing outwards makes it look like this valued form (color) instead of function (ability to see which book it is). That would be my only piece of advice - sometimes it’s ok for something to not "look" the way you would have chosen it to, if a less "pretty" way functions better for day to day living.

There is only one thing I kind of dislike - I know everyone's taste is different, I don't mean to criticise theirs, but I personally don't like the trend of making kid's rooms all white, beige and neutral. I get that adults might prefer a clean and simple colour palette, but I imagine that being surrounded by colourful things is more interesting for children.
@skengels2 жыл бұрын
eh, my room as a child was painted white with a white bookshelf, white bed (I think pink, white or yellow bedding), white vintage vanity and stool, and beige carpet. My mom put up a variety of cute and detailed pictures though, which I LOVED and would stare at making up narratives about them. The room had some windows next to a street lamp and tree, so at night I would watch the shadows of the leaves moving through the (beige, of course) windowshade. When I think about the space in my childhood room, large color spreads didn't matter to me so much as having some pictures, fancy little boxes to put special things in, stuffed animals, books to look at and think about. My point being is that kids will make fun out of anything available and imagination is a hell of a drug. I think the lack of art in their apartment is disappointing but I can understand how it might "close up" the space. I really hate the modern trend of color blob art, so flat and boring and requires basically no thought or skill from an artist.

Like people are saying, I am very aware that other places in Europe and (from what I have seen) Toronto have small spaces; they are quite common. But often here I see people come to NYC for a year and then say well we’re going to have kids so we have to leave. Look at this apartment. The kids are so happy. Just really well done, beautiful design, such great uses of space. I love my tiny studio and this is super inspiring. 💛

Aww your kids are precious! Personally I loved the apartment tour; small spaces are my thing & I guess that's good bc I'm currently renting a room in a friend's house & I've had to turn it into a studio which is working out fine but not quite as well as I'd like lol. I love everything you've done to your small space; the style of furniure; soft on the eyes & senses, neutral palette, the towel rack in the bathroom & the kids room is so sweet, but oddly enough, I love the tiny kitchen! It's not that I don't like to cook it's just so cozy & inviting & that dining set! Everything you've done to make your small space a practical & beautiful place so insiprational. Thx so much for the tour!

Another great thing about limited space ... you don't keep, save, collect STUFF that you don't use or really need. I would love to do this!

Cute names for the kids! Beatles fan, I assume? Also what a clever use of space!

The names Lennon and James are silly. Using James as a girl’s name is copied from Blake Lively, so that feels a bit wanna-be-ish. Very sweet family though.

Do most people not count their kitchen table in eat-in kitchens as counter space? I see more and more folks saying that they don’t have counter space yet there’s usually a kitchen table in the room. In a small space it’s usually a given but even in my kitchen with an island I still include my table as counter space. I don’t get it.🤷🏽♀️

Lived in a wonderful little apt in San Francisco for a decade, only 530 sq ft. Built in 1921. same tiny stove (worked perfectly, even a whole turkey) learned the exact same tricks via necessity, spices on magnet wall mount, hanging pot rack, use all the high ceiling space/storage, color pallete is very important, brought furniture-got rid of it & thrift shopped w/measurements, etc etc👍🏻ALL exceptional tips💓

I think I would put the crib right next to the bunk bed and put the play kitchen where the crib was. It’s not a good idea to be right by the window because of lightning. It might give you more floor space, too!

Sooo good! This shows how little we really need on a day to day basis and that a lot of the furniture etc we own are just for show.

Wow I live alone with 2 dogs my apartment id just under 600sq feet= 55kvm. I have struggled with decorating and making storage. Your place feels serene and roomie. You have 5 people living in that spac E. I am so impressed.

This is really nice for such a small space with a family. I'm glad there is a park near by for the kids to get out and run around.

Beautiful home and great use of space. However, all of those books over their heads on the couch was giving me the sweats.

What a cute family 👪 💓! As I was watching, couldn't help but notice the bedroom windows. Our own son just turned 18, but I couldn't help remember child proofing the window in his bedroom when he was young. We installed a window lock with an alarm, so we would be alerted if he would try to get out, or if someone tried the window. Just a suggestion. Best wishes ❤.

Funny how there is only one window guard in the entire apt. As I remember, it’s the law to have them in every window if you have kids in NYC.

@@missadventure3397 I didn't know about the laws for window guards in NYC, but I got scared looking at the windows and thinking about the kiddos' safety around them!

Curious if there's a storage locker or similar space in the building? I always wonder where people keep things like strollers, bikes, car seats (not sure what people do for kids and cars, like Ubers and taxis)? There's a lot of superfluous kid "stuff" that people don't necessarily need, but I would think there's at least some gear, especially for safety, that you just have to have until they age-out.

One little tip about "using" the vertical space is armoires. Ornate, simple, Japandi, mirrored or painted to look like a wall whatever it is effective use of space. It may not be as pretty as a painitng on a wall but it can easily double and then some storage space. You can even hang art work on the doors. creating a headboard or tv stand of storage around the bed or tv can look attractive. Ikea's has units that create storage that creates a head board or frame for a tv using wall space creating cabinets and can look interesting including super modern or rustic whatever. Storage furniture - beds and sofa are great too.

Location, location, location!!! The apartment is very small but has the park just in front!! That is fantastic for the kids, out all day and come in to sleep, this is what we did in Spain, out all day playing, that is the way to grow up!
