If he wins the 35 title and max keeps losing, if volk or usman dont just streak like 10 defenses aldo will legit be the goat imo. Aldo, Holloway and Volk are like the greatest triat any division has ever had, and even tho aldo lost to both convincingly he has some arguments in his favor like the decade of owning everything he had before they started being top contenders and the fact that his biggest weakness, cardio, is amongst the greatest aspects of their games. If he retired right before Conor he'd be on a similar footing to pre 85 title gsp, and winning the 35 belt rn with a run like aldo is having would be leagues above gsp's bisping fight. And gsp is the more consensual goat, so yeah. It's kinda weird in MMA, how it's in many ways the most forward thinking form of combat sports, but at the same time it's often totally behind the times. The calf kicks and Aldos method of checking them is this new trend in MMA, but it's just normal go-to stuff in traditional karate. Kinda like Machidas jumping switch front kick. But in MMA things always go in these circles. People bring something in that's not yet part of the "MMA meta" - often from more traditional styles - then after a while fighters figure it out and then it's on to the next thing. Used to be BJJ, wrestling, then the oblique and now the calf kick, etc. It's evolving frequently.

Difference is in those other sports s you don't have to worry about techniques from other sports. So its a comon thing for karate to defend calf kicks by pivoting but how many karatecas can defend a take down? MMA fighters have alot more and different offense to worry about, and making changes to your game (that your prob tried hone in for decades) just bcuz of a new move sometimes isn't the best option and other times can outright prevent you from being offensive or leave other holes to be exploited. Now one is saying MMA techniques are new and cuting edge. MMA is most of the times a colection of techniques and movement that you use in your own specific way.
@honigdachs.2 жыл бұрын
@@tiagopacheco4654 You're certainly right in the sense that in MMA, you need to care about and train so many things that new stuff takes some time to catch on and integrated into the "curriculum". As far as this whole calf kick meta goes though, it still surprises me. On a technical level: that little inside snap block that Aldo does to negate the kick - "nami ashi" is what they call in in karate terms - is actually the better technique when you have to consider something like a double leg takedown as well. The inside block allows you to stay strong on the front leg and it takes way less time to return to your forward stance. In comparison the "standard" method borrowed from Muay Thai where you raise your shin outwards and maybe sit on the back leg a little leaves your balance compromised longer and you're tall when your leg is back on the mat. So if you're expecting a leg kick, you might be more susceptible for the takedown. In contrast, staying in forward stance or getting back to it earlier gives you a better chance of meeting the guy with your hip, like you're taught in collegiate wrestling. Drive with the hip, sprawl off of that, switch legs at an angle, press the head down and get the whizzer. I wonder if more fighters will adopt this from Aldo.

I agree with the GOAT statement you made, i've recently been thinking that with aldo's continued success against top level competition in both featherweight and bantamweight even after his lengthy featherweight reign and run at featherweight before that, the guy has maybe the most varied and complete record in mma so far, he's been fighting at the very top for over a decade; pretty undefeated records like nurmagomedov's are nice, but his retirement just made his career kinda short; nurmagomedov has a case for being the GOAT right now, but in years, as more people compete in the sport and keep getting better records, nurmagomedov's will eventually look a bit short

Having an undefeated record isn't very impressive. You could be surviving on temporary gimmicks or styles people aren't well trained against yet. Giving people time to really dismantle your fighting style so they can better navigate a fight and read an opponent and STILL winning through innovation, skill, or strength is actually impressive. Khabib really cared about being undefeated and got out before someone got a win on him. Pretty lame IMO.

I'm a big fan of Jose and his career is definitely legendary but, Khabib was the MOST dominant fighter to ever enter the Octagon. Great video mate. Love the breakdown and I think you are right that all fighters should start to use these 2 techniques. Im surprised that they weren't used earlier

Getting stoked for his return at 301, where he BETTER be implementing these techniques lolol

Wow. Watching Aldo counter the calf kick like that just looks so... masterful. Amazing.

Beautiful breakdown of his calf kick defense

Both calf kick evasions look straight out of karate kata. Apparently, to make use of karate you need to learn boxing and Muay Thai.

Really cool the way you point out how he pivots to not just successfully avoid the attack but also to remain in position and be able to quickly attack in response

As an older man who worked in the lumber industry for too long, watching Aldo check kicks like that where his lead foot rotates towards his trailing knee makes my knee twinge. That shit is going to hurt later

I feel like Aldo’s been leg kicking his whole career. Crazy he went on 10 year win streak and still just went out on a win truly a legend of the sport. Sucks most of the casuals just remember what mcgregor did to him

Great analysis. That pivot check is absolutely beautiful

tight analysis. You highlighted something nobody talked about in that fight. Everyone was all about Aldo's "navy boxing" lol. Nice work.

Hoost was a master of checking leg kicks. So satisfying to see this simple technique having such a big impact on a whole fight. Aldo is the man!

I was blown away at how good Aldo has gotten at defending calf kicks, he's laid the blueprint for the next generation of fighters

the way munoz drops his right hand on EVERY SINGLE kick attempt, surely timing it with a left hook would be a deterent. i've also wondered why the superman punch hasn't been resurrected. draw back your lead leg, jump forward off the back leg and put the right hand down the pipe. the way munoz hands flail when he kicks, I see him being susceptible to this also.

I think MVP also pivots to check those kicks. He said something along the lines during his meeting with Aspinall
