Since 1993, I've been a huge fan of Carol Danvers. RIP Stan Lee. Carol Susan Jane Danvers is a fictional character who appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. She was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan. In her first appearance, she was depicted as an officer in the United States Air Force and a colleague of the Kree superhero Mar-Vell in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (March 1968).
@williambanks2223 Жыл бұрын
Just to add a little more data: Danvers later became the first incarnation of Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel #1 (cover-dated January 1977) after her DNA was fused with Mar-Vell's during an explosion, giving her superhuman powers. Mar-Vell was a male in the comics. It's ironic you mentioned getting cancer from your powers because Mar-Vell died of cancer in the comics (Death of Captain Marvel)(1982)

So I'll defend this movie. Carol has been my favorite female super hero since 1992, when I read an issue where she punched Rogue of the X-Men literally to the moon. In the comics she's not just a pilot but a former spy and a born leader and one of the longest serving Avengers, and probably the female Avenger with the longest running solo title (She-Hulk is second longest but neither have gotten to issue 200 yet. Carol will next year though). People in the comments complain they changed the origin to fit the movie, but actually they changed very little. The basic elements from the comic and film are the same -- Carol is present at a conflict between Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg, a Kree device explodes during the conflict, and the result is Carol gets super powers. The only difference is in the film it was the engine, in the comics it's some kind of psychic doohickey. The only other small difference is in the comics, she only gets her super strength and flight at first; she doesn't get her energy powers and the ability to survive in space until a second group of aliens kidnaps and experiments on her. The film consolidates those two things and honestly I think that improves the origin ... the comics had a habit of being convoluted. If you want the best of the character I highly recommend reading the second half of her '70s comic book series, "Ms. Marvel"; her run in the X-Men series circa "Uncanny X-Men" 150-175; her 2000s "Ms. Marvel" series; or her 2010s "Captain Marvel" series. There's a lot of good stuff there that might help you appreciate the character more. An important single issue story for her is "Avengers" Annual 10 from the early 1980s.... the plot diverges from the movie version but its a really good way of understanding the character better.

It’s true that this was shoehorned into the universe but they didn’t have the same time to give this story line to explain the characters. They really reworked a good portion of story arc from the comics. This was why a lot people weren’t fans of the movie. But again this was done because Marvel/Disney were really focused on getting to the end of the saga that they kind of cut some corners and not put as much as they could have to explain this shift of story from the comics.

Captain Marvel was supposed to debut at the end of Age of Ultron, then her movie would be early in the next phase. But there was one Marvel Studio executive blocking her movie because he felt that nobody wanted to see a female superhero. She was supposed to be 3 movies deep by this point, but her movies kept getting blocked. This one was finally made because Disney moved one executive out of the studio and over to the comic book division. But they had 2 movies full of story to put into it before Endgame. so if it seems rushed & convoluted, that's way. It's still one of my favorite Marvel Comics adaptations. It is do much better than the original comic books.

It's interesting to me how Fury lost his eye due to getting a intergalactic mass destruction creature upset. But he chose to change the story because everyone would just see a cat. Funny fact: captain marvel was gonna be introduced in the new avengers team at the end of 'age of Ultron' but then they deleated her because it was too soon to introduce a character that so powerful. They definitely took the right decision in using her the least posible because not many characters besides ironman can follow her pace, specially considering that she not only project energy but also absorb it.(that's why she initially felt the blast of a spaceship but immediately she started to just tank it) Outside the movie: Sam L Jackson and Brie Larson has such a beautiful dynamic out of the screen,she talked recently about Samuel sending her memes every morning.

It also mad Kevin Smith, a HUGE comic book fan cry cause it means HIS whole movie universe, (Clerks, Mallrats, Something About Amy, Clerks 2, etc) is all canon in the Marvel Universe of films.... -Captain Marvel has been around in different iterations and names probably as long as the Avengers have been around. The main purpose of this movie was to introduce audiences to a character who would play a relatively important role in the next film, Endgame. While Marvel Studios was working according to a plan for the Infinity Saga, that plan did not always go as expected. Originally Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel was supposed to be introduced sometime in Phase 2, and in fact there was storyboarding done for Avengers: Age of Ultron where Captain Marvel would have been one of the characters joining the Avengers at the end of the film when they showed War Machine, Falcon, Vision, and Wanda Maximoff being inducted into the team. Unfortunately, due to issues within the studio, the purchase of Marvel by Disney, and problems in pre-production, some films were either significantly delayed (like Ant-Man which was supposed to be released prior to Guardians of the Galaxy and this film, Captain Marvel) or cancelled entirely (like The Inhumans, which was being teased heavily in the Agents of SHIELD TV series at the time). This film was book-ended into the release order by Kevin Feige only because audiences needed to know who Carol Danvers was before the release of Endgame. It may have been that rush to produce this film (as well as some behind-the-scenes friction) that made this film not up to the usual Marvel standards audiences expected. But you finally made it! You've reached the Endgame! Can't wait to see next week's Marvel reaction!
@AzileNyesemane Жыл бұрын
oh I think the reason why he was finding it hard to see why they made the movie, its because he wanted it to connect to Infinity war heavily but just like many other early on or rather, introductory movies, it was more on the background and of course sprinkling in the tesseract info and how Capt. Marvel got her powers from it.

Captain Marvel was basically told “girls can’t play baseball!” &, in a blink, was arguably the most powerful character in the entire MCU. . .the MCU that was 10 years, 21 films & 3 phases in already. *_(2.) The relatability:_* The character is supposed to be serious, stoic, “soldier-ly” & not quite human. . .but she just comes off as disinterested & uninteresting. Characters in somewhat similar fashioning (Agent Coulson, Happy, Fury, Thanos, Ronan, Ronin, the Sorcereress Supreme, Jarvis, Vision) don’t have this issue. GROOT SHOWS MORE BALANCED EMOTION🤣 *_(3.) The actress vs the character:_* Regardless of how potentially well-meaning people try to frame this, it was bad. Brie Larson made disparaging, dismissive & condescending comments about arguably the bulk of comic / MCU fans during the media tour ahead of the film. It’s something that would’ve never been tolerated if black cast members said something similar ahead of Black Panther, if Pakistani cast members said something similar ahead of Ms Marvel, if men (in general) said something similar ahead of every male-character-led release. It was not simply an objective conclusion. She was wrong. . .& that’s why no one in Marvel (cast or otherwise) supported her comments. The the Skrulls are the green shapeshifters. 34:40-34:49 when Carol shot the energy core, she already knew that had been Mar Vell's intent, so logically she didn't think it would take out the planet. The energy containment would vent in the direction of the breach, which explains why most of it hit Carol. Other than the really bizarre events of the last hour or so, she knew and Trusted Dr. Lawson. Yes, the initiative was The Protector Initiative, Fury was looking at a picture of Carol getting into the jet she was assigned to, which said on the side _CAPT CAROL "AVENGER" DANVERS_ "Avenger was her callsign [Like "Goose" "Maverick" and "Iceman" in Top Gun.] I was very disappointed with this movie based mostly on it's marketing. Virtually every bit of marketing I saw was making a big deal that she's a she. Emphasis on HER with the O fading in after to make HERO, that kind of thing. I am quite fine with powerful characters, strong character regardless. But to build so much of the marketing on the emphasis "Oh wow, we're having a FEMALE super hero." made me expect this movie to be a little less than it turned out to be.

He then spent his early life as a Kree battle slave. The Kree Empire is made up of multiple different conquered races, not just blue folks.
@christopherdunlap7028 Жыл бұрын
The movie flips the character alignments (the Kree and Skrull) because in the comics, the Skrull are notoriously evil. They are almost always portrayed as the villain, so as soon as fans saw the Skrull were in it they immediately assumed they were the villains and it threw everything for a twist. The point was to show that even in the worst of times, Nick Fury has something in his back pocket, even for the end of the world (or half of it). Almost all of the origin movies are considered the worst because so much foundation has to be laid down explaining the character. This one even more so because it had a shorter run time. But, outside of Iron Man, the origin movies don't go as well as the follow up movies.

Captain Marvel, previously known as Ms Marvel, has actually been a huge Marvel character since 1968, the same year Iron Man was invented. The reason she got introduced late is the same reason Black Widow got her movie late - the original head Marvel boss believed female super hero movies would never sell and refused to alow it. When Disney bought the company he was later fired and replaced, and then the Captain Marvel and Black Widow movies were allowed. Another fun fact: DC had a character called Captain Marvel. Marvel took them to court claiming that they were using the marvel name to sell comics, Marvel won the case and won the right to use the name, so they gave the name to Ms Marvel, she became Captain Marvel, and despite what some sections of the internet might tell you, for a very long time she has been one of the most popular comic book characters in history
@damon61267 ай бұрын
Respectfully, that's incorrect. The true, male, Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) was introduced in 1967 in Marvel Comics. He wasn't previously known as anything until he was introduced that year (first appearance was in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 1967). The Carol Danvers character was introduced in 1968 but she wasn't introduced as Ms. Marvel until 1977 and given her own comic title. The evil mutant Rogue would eventually steal her powers and memories, but later on Danvers obtained powers by being experimented on by an alien race known as The Brood and she became known as Binary in 1982. Your version of the Captain Marvel name is completely wrong. While Marvel did win in court, the name did not first go to Ms. Marvel (as explained above). The Marvel Comics vs DC comics feud regarding the name Captain Marvel (who some know as Shazam) dated back to when a comics company called Fawcett Comics created the character Captain Marvel in 1939. DC sued Fawcett because Fawcett's CM character was (they felt) a knock-off of Superman. DC wanted Fawcett to cease production of the comics by the early 1940s, but Fawcett fought to delay a court battle for years. It wasn’t until 1948 that the case actually went to trial, with the dust finally settling in DC's favor in 1954. Legally, Fawcett would never be allowed to print another Captain Marvel book. In 1961 Marvel Comics (formerly Timely comics) came on the scene with heroes and titles that many know, like the Fantastic Four. Marvel was a buzzword again, and in 1966, a short-lived company called M.F. Enterprises tried to capitalize with a new character named Captain Marvel-generally considered one of the worst superheroes ever put to paper. Marvel now needed to stop inferior comics from using its name on their covers, so it obtained the trademark for the Captain Marvel name and went about protecting it by introducing yet another character named Captain Marvel. This new alien version of the hero made his debut shortly after in 1967's Marvel Super-Heroes #12. Fawcett Comics would eventually agree to license the character Captain Marvel to DC in 1973. Now the world’s two biggest publishers both had high-profile characters named Captain Marvel. But there was a catch: Since Marvel owned the rights to the name, DC couldn’t call its new Captain Marvel comic Captain Marvel. Instead, all of his comics went by the title Shazam, as did the character’s live-action TV revival in the mid-1970s. Oddly enough, the name of the character himself was still-wait for it-Captain Marvel. So DC could retain the character’s name in the stories but couldn’t slap it onto book covers or TV shows. Only Marvel could monetize the name Captain Marvel. There is a lot more to this whole feud but this but this will give some idea of where the name and characters originated. And, despite what some sections of KZbin might tell you, the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel character has absolutely not been one of the most popular comic book characters in history. Her title has been rebooted many times and sales are mediocre at best.

@@damon6126 When it comes to explainations sir, that was pretty epic, but I do have to say that the last part regarding her popularity is subjective, it's been up and down over the years and she was very popular at one time, which you probably do know. As for the rest, I just chose to be a little more concise than you and simplified a lot of elements by cutting to the core of things and leaving some things out. I personally don't find the youtube comment section lends itself to the novel format.

It's a fun enough movie, but it had the raw deal of getting released when it did, because all anybody cared about was to get to Endgame. Plus introducing a new character that is already said to be the strongest of all the heroes just rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

"A race car driver's seat is sometimes also called a cockpit. The original meaning was literally "pit where a cockfight happens," and in the 1700s cockpit became the Royal Navy's term for the area where a coxswain, or ship's pilot, was stationed." - vocabulary website. I would have liked to seen her drop this but of knowledge, perhaps, during the 'stand up' scene.

Stan Lee filmed a cameo for Endgame before filming his last cameo for this movie(not counting his cameo in the 2018 Spiderman game). RIP Stan Lee, a legend and icon this universe of movies wouldn't exist without. This one takes place in the 90s, hence Blockbuster still existing. It wasn’t only about Carol trusting the Skrulls who had long been her enemies…it wouldn’t have taken her long being on earth after that vision to start thinking she was human or at least humanish? Then 2 humans know you, have stories about you, and pictures and such…so is her enemy really her enemy if the Kree are not even her ppl? Humans don’t got no problem with the skrulls (yet). Thats why Talos could speak so confidently to her because it was kind of clear she’d been played at that point, even without his extra info.

A lot of characters weren't well known before they ended up in the MCU. The Guardians are an example. One of the best upcoming movies is about a littke known character. Some people have issues that she's got the Superman problem in that she is over-powered. Some had a probkem with Brie Larsen abd some comments she made and projected that dislike onto the movie. I thought the movie began saying what year it was.
@bryantcrespo6119 Жыл бұрын
Fun fact: Bri Larson filmed this movie after Endgame. She said when filming Endgame she was still trying to find her character or something like that. From my understanding is one of the higher ups in Disney didn’t want a female led superhero movie which is why we got her character so late. She was originally supposed to be introduced in Age of Ultron, but that idea got scrapped. Endgame is also what 10 years of movies get you. Think of Endgame as the conclusion to this overall story and Spider-Man Far From Home as the epilogue.

You do know Carol Danvers, if you saw the old 90's X-Men cartoon where Rogue could fly, was super strong and tough. She stole those powers from Carol Danvers (who was the original Ms Marvel at the time.) The movie streamlined and re-imagined the rather convoluted history of Carol and Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell). Easter-egg- Little Monica aka "Lt. Trouble" would take on the name Captain Marvel in the comics long before Carol took on the mantle. In the MCU she pops up as an adult in a Disney+ series. (I'll avoid spoilers and not tell you which one.)
