𝗔 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁-𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! / 𝗽𝘂𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 à 𝗹𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 !
Xavier Hubert-Brierre and his wife Anne-Marie, with their friend Michel Guiss Djoumou, set up cameras in a remote area of Gabon's forest to shoot the diversity of wildlife in this beautiful country and then publish their videos on KZbin. The first videos were not particularly exciting as they mainly showed wild animals " walking by " for a few seconds in front of the lenses of their trap cameras fitted with motion detector. So, they came up with the idea of setting up very large mirrors to attract the curiosity of the animals and filming their reactions to their reflection with these trap cameras. These mirrors break the monotony of the daily life of some animals in this remote area. Although their presence may disturb some jungle species, many quickly get used to them and even take pleasure in observing their reflection in these mirrors or in sleeping near their reflection, a friend? a mate? like the leopard, a solitary animal, the main carnivore in this remote area.
Red river hog / Potamocherus porcus
- red coat with an erectile white mane of the spine to the back
- long white ears ending in tufts of white or black hair.
- weight up to 120 kg (male). Boars are somewhat larger than sows.
- feeds on roots, tubers, fruits, grass, insects and even carrion.
- communicates almost continuously through growls and small barks.
Using its large snout, it searches the ground under dead leaves for roots, tubers, seeds and fruits like the Ozouga (Sacoglottis gabonensis).
The sow has a very high fertility rate. After a gestation period of about 4 months, she will give birth to an average of three to six piglets, dark brown with horizontal yellow stripes. These stripes disappear before the age of 6 months.
Its main predators are leopards and humans. Its meat is highly prized, and for example in Libreville, the capital of Gabon, a red river hog can be purchased for 300/400 USD depending on its size. It is on the list of thirteen partially protected animal species in Gabon whose hunting, capture, possession, transport, and sale are regulated in accordance with the texts in force.
--------------------------------------------

*Learn all about our idea of mirrors that brighten up your dull London days:* 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁: My wife and I are neither scientists nor veterinarians nor primatologists nor photographers. We wanted to thank Gabon, which has welcomed our family for more than 35 years (in the retail sector), to show on KZbin the diversity of the fauna of this beautiful country and to make Internet users want to visit it. Our first videos posted on our KZbin channel essentially showed wildlife "passing" in front of the lenses of our trap cameras equipped with motion detectors: The passage of an elephant in front of the objective of a trap for about twenty seconds is not particularly interesting. On the other hand, a video of young elephants playing in a river while adults are quenching their thirst is much more enjoyable to watch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aompmIWhiMaYitU Elephant calves have fun during a creek crossing (Gabon jungle). To find such "spots" it is advisable to get further away from the path used by the few 4x4 vehicles of Nyonié, to go deeper into the forest and to walk in the beds of creeks and small rivers. This is not safe, especially when you are old and becoming partially deaf. Fortunately my wife has a very accurate hearing. To progress more easily in the forest, animals use this off-road trail, without vines, bushes, brambles and trees mixed on the ground because of the very numerous tornadoes in this region on the Equator line. We came up with the idea of placing very large mirrors at the end of a long straight line of an off-road track to catch their eyes and "block" them in front of their image. We have also placed other mirrors under trees where numerous animals appreciate the fruits. At other locations in the middle of the forest it would have been very lucky for animals to meet their reflection. Our use of mirrors has been of great interest to primatologists, including members of the PSG, not the Paris Saint Germain football club, but the Primate Specialists Group, who have only been able to study self-recognition in a mirror in great apes in laboratories with captive animals or animals born in captivity, used to contact with humans. These animals did not have to search for food, defend their families against other congeners and predators, sometimes imitating humans, and therefore had very different distorted behaviours from primates living in complete freedom with their group or family in a remote area of Gabon's forest. Our cameras have highlighted a very particular behaviour among chimpanzees in the Nyonié region and resulted in a scientific publication, "Reflections in rainforest mirrors facilitate behavioral observations of wild chimpanzees Primates n°58 2017-01". On our two following videos this behavior is filmed: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqWweJaCp7ZkaKc (Rump-Rump Rubbing in Chimpanzees = anti-stress effect? A social behavior ever observed previously) and kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqfPmoekf5yCotE (scared chimps reassure themselves with pseudo-copulation and rump-to-rump contacts front of mirror). This is how, incidentally in wild animals, we discovered and became interested in their self-recognition in our large full length mirrors. Keep watching my homemade videos (180 pieces) that I put online on my channel and read the description attached to each one of them. You will know very interesting explanations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle and share its link with your friends: kzbin.infovideos

Fascinating to watch. For me it looks like he's enjoying that there is 'another leopard' around, that he can snuggle up to (also seen in the other video with the elephants). Even gives him enough confidence to lie down for a nap, with his buddy around. Seems he's a pretty lonely guy. Of course it's just my imagination.

*Without these mirrors,* jungle life is cruel and monotony : These animals encounter other opponents in the jungle constantly. And those opponents (or prey) have actual claws, fangs, tusks, and horns to fight back with and shed blood. They fight or they flee or both. They fight amongst themselves within their own herds and prides regardless of species for food, status, for mating right and territory and might die in those encounters. *With these mirrors, I break the monotony of the daily life of some animals in this remote area of the gabonese rain forest. If the presence of my mirrors can disturb some species in the jungle, quickly many of them get habituated to it and even take pleasure to observe their reflection in my mirrors.* These wild animals can go to these mirrors, as they see fit and stay in front of them, as long as they wish. They are not tied as dogs with leashes, locked as dog or cats in flats especially with dressing rooms equipped with a full-length mirror! They are not imprisoned for life in pens or cages with the distraction of watching visitors standing behind their fences or bars, eating the food they have neither picked nor hunted as Harambe (a silverback gorilla), born in captivity and dead 17 years later, still captive , killed by a bullet in his enclosure! *_No food is placed by humans next to mirrors to encourage them to come._* I would like to point out that among the wild animals meeting these mirrors placed in this remote region of Gabon, some seem happy to look at themselves in these mirrors: as these leopards: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHaTgoWcZ9Wdp8k kzbin.info/www/bejne/el6kkqVvh5qdmLs as these chimpanzees: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGWboX2GZ52Gf8k as these young gorillas: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWS2gpdnpMSlZpI Look at how the silverback gorilla's behaviour has evolved near the mirrors his family is looking at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc Look at how the gorilla family's walking speed increases when they approach a mirror whose location they have memorized kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc

Bonne Année à Rand, a loyal subscriber! Gabon is a large country as large as Italy or the United Kingdom with a population of less than two million. This country has 13 national parks managed and controlled by the National Agency for National Parks (ANPN). This agency also has the mission, together with the Ministry of Water and Forests, to fight against poaching of elephants to satisfy the high demand for ivory from Asia and poaching of bushpigs and small game, which are highly valued by the Gabonese. Please watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJPYhZ1tpbOpfq8 *Before buying ivory jewellery or carved ivory objects, watch the video of this elephant (Gabon)* kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6CcmIqfbdWNp6c *Can an elephant survive without half of its trunk lost in a poacher's wire snare?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/foHOZqmNpLOHebM *An elephant injured by a poacher’s snare recovers after self treatment* kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJi7f4xorKyEZ7M *An elephant trapped in a poacher's snare* *In the remote area where I fixed my mirrors with an average of five cameras in front of each other and 80 trap cameras outside the area around the mirrors for nearly 11 years, I have noticed a significant increase in the number of leopards and their size. Why?* Because small game is more important and thus makes it possible to feed a larger number of leopards. Why is small game more important? Why has the gorilla family become larger? Why are chimpanzee groups more important? Why do red river hogs (bushpig) troops exceed fifty individuals? The poachers of this game avoid this region for fear of being photographed by my cameras : Watch this videos kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHrShoBmi9OMpMk

Thank you to my loyal subscriber. Aged 77, half-deaf, and my wife aged 72 with knee problems, we have decided not to pursue this passion that has become dangerous. Given the large number of videos filmed over more than 10 years by our numerous trap cameras, we are thinking about publishing new videos on line, such as the specific behaviour of members of a gorilla family. If you are a subscriber, you will be informed by KZbin when a new video is published. I'm sure you haven't read all our 180 home-made videos published on our channel kzbin.infovideos. After viewing each video, I recommend that you first read the accompanying description in English, which contains further explanations, and then return to the home page of my channel to choose another of my videos. May I suggest some of my 180 videos filmed with our traps, posted on my channel, which have never been recommended by KZbin and which therefore unfortunately have a very low number of views, even though they are very instructive, such as - The baby elephant sleeps upright close to its mother so that it is not forgotten when the night walk resumes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIquoY2kiMaYd9U - A newborn elephant's first mud bath with its mum and aunts: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKHNYomcoLN9iZY - The baby gorilla is being trained in the mirror: Mum comes to pick him up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5rUpHmphK-bhtE - Elephants playing in the pouring rain in the jungles of Gabon: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIiuZ6SBqMt_rNk - An elephant calf thinks its reflection in the mirror is a young cow or calf: cute reaction kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ25h5uejrunibc - It's not easy for a baby elephant to get around in the jungle (Gabon): kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHmXgWCgdshpeLM - Elephants crossing the River Ndouni in Gabon in front of trap cameras: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5zQgXWiabODrJo - Two silverback gorillas fight in the jungle - Animal reactions in huge mirrors dirtied by a leopard: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anStYWeterGgfrc - A male and female leopard use a mirror for their text messages. These are two very different behaviours: 1) the silverback gorilla avoiding looking at his reflection in the mirror because between silverbacks looking straight into the eyes is a fighting declaration (not in blackback gorillas) but trying to intimidate and chase away this intruder (his own reflection which he does not know because he has not been able to undertake his mirror training where it is appropriate to look straight into the eyes) 2) the leopard that does not have the cognitive ability to recognise himself, does not know what he looks like and smells the scent left by a rival male that has previously rubbed against the mirror Watch more of my 180 homemade videos published on my channel kzbin.infovideos and read the description attached to each of them. I wonder the long term effects on the behaviour of the animals; do they deliberately go to the mirrors and play, or do they just randomly stumble upon them? In the case of primates: is it possible to add this to their culture or is it just a daily distraction?

What all these videos still make me wonder is that: sure, sight senses are tricked as the mirror is almost a perfect reflection… but what about all the others? Smelling and hearing, especially when up close, wouldn’t be fooled. Unless sight is of such high importance that even if every other senses isn’t “detecting” the supposed other animal… it still goes with it. Makes me wonder if just printing a life sized photorealistic animal prop (flat cardboard box style) would also trigger some of the animals to try to approach it or scare them away.

Why would he let you steal views, allow competition in the same niche and lose youtube money $$$ when he is the one who went to africa, bought a huge strong mirror, transport it in the jungle and film hours of video to probably maybe get 30 minutes of interesting footage. Not to mention all the time it takes to edit 😆 Just make your own video if you want to be big in youtube game If you like a video share link. Instead of downloading the video and reuploading it. Altho to be honest 90% of people who do this is because they try to be big on youtube in a lazy opportunistic way by using other peoples videos. Just make your own video! At worst adopt a cat, play with him, record video and upload it you gonna get views and suscribers. And video would be 100% yours

You didn't make these mirrors for their good. You add links in your comments, it's your business. What they get in return for your benefits is stress. Percentage of animal curiosity. Really the animal kingdom does not need such inventions, they add nothing

And what's your issue with that? This is very interesting content to watch. The animals aren't being forced to look at the mirror, they are free in their natural habitat. Stop whining and spamming them same comment on every video and get a life.

@21jajego1 Denim 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘇𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁! (𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲 𝗡é𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁) "you have been bothering wild animals for years for no other reason than money." In 12 years of trapping I have - bought 304 photographic traps at an average price of 150 us dollars each, - made a total of 48 return flights between France and Gabon with my wife, - built 50 mirrors (short life span due to humidity and termites) and finally we stayed about 60/70 weeks in the Nyonié camp located 10 km from my trapping area! Please read at least the description attached to my videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqfPmoekf5yCotE scared chimps reassure themselves with rump-to-rump contacts front of mirror kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaqXpqKupt9litU Vine or branch in hand, gorillas and chimps are emboldened to attack their reflection in a mirror. Have you once set a foot in the forest to be able to announce: "always several mirrors in the wild, and that the animals must encounter them hundreds of times" What have you done so far in your life to make such remarks about me? On your channel I see that you have managed to post 4 videos totalling 93,000 views in 12 years (on my side during the same period 180 videos, 142 million views, 199,000 subscribers) Finally, why do you hide behind a pseudonym, have the courage to put your full identity to assume your words!

@Har S *_Yours comment is a great moral booster after reading comments calling for the dismantling of these cruel mirrors!_* *Your feedback on my videos encourages us to pursue our overwhelming and somewhat dangerous passion. It is a great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me. As you may have noticed we are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. But we maintain our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then we do the editing of the videos and write a long description in English which is not our native language (french) and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on... and answer to numerous comments posted on my channel* It's a choice.. *These wild animals can go to these mirrors, as they see fit and stay in front of them, as long as they wish. They are not tied as dogs with leashes, locked as dog or cats in flats especially with dressing rooms equipped with a full-length mirror! They are not imprisoned for life in pens or cages with the distraction of watching visitors standing behind their fences or bars, eating the food they have neither picked nor hunted as Harambe (a silverback gorilla), born in captivity and dead 17 years later, still captive , killed by a bullet in his enclosure!* *_No food is placed by humans next to mirrors to encourage them to come._* Watch more of my 180 videos published on my channel kzbin.infovideos and read the description attached to each of them. You will find very interesting information about the reactions of the animals in front of my mirrors in the gabonese jungle: Good vision!
