Description English/French. 𝐑.𝐈.𝐏. 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬
IN ANIMALS AS IN HUMANS, SELF-RECOGNITION IN A MIRROR IS NOT INNATE. It is the result of the more comfortable training in the mirror at home among young humans in the company of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way. Among chimpanzees, in the insecurity of the jungle, learning with his parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. In an attempt to frighten this stranger, male chimpanzees show their great stoutness by standing in a bipedal position, with outstretched arms, bristling hair (more volume) and uttering shrill cries.
Before the installation of these mirrors, the only experience of chimpanzees with reflections could have been in puddles with a dark bottom, where they could see their own shadow or see the image of chimpanzees, their congener(s) at their side.
Keep watching the other videos in our channel and read the description attached to each one. They will provide you with interesting additional information
------

2:30 he gets that there are two of his friend and then his mind is blown when he gets close to the reflection. I thinks he understands it's not a threat but then..... just doesn't understand what's happening yet.

I love how the one keeps looking back at his friends behind him and then to the mirror, slowly connecting the dots. Even if he doesn't know his own face he knows what his friends look like and is trying to figure out why there's clones of them. 😂

*During the first exposures, each alpha chimpanzee (silverback) effectively recognizes its neighbours among the reflections, it also notices the presence of a stranger it has never met: its image it does not know. What is he doing there? Why is he here? Why would I share with this unknown silverback the right to mate with the females in our group? In an attempt to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), with whom he does not want to share the females of his group, this chimpanzee shows his large build, standing in a bipedal position, arms outstretched, ruffling his hair, and shows his strength with heavy loudly slaps with cupped hands on the ground. These slaps on the ground must be very noisy because this alpha chimpanzee want to show his power and thus scare the invader of his domain (his own image) and push him to escape. His reflection taking the same attitude, he hesitates to fight it.* Under these conditions, learning to use the mirror is not possible and cannot be successful for silverback chimpanzees. After a long practice in mirror in laboratory, some chimpanzees have performed unambiguouslyon the mirror test, but not always. Keep watching the new videos that I put online on my channel and read the description attached to each one of them. You will know very interesting information about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle : kzbin.infovideos

What fascinates me the most is that both gorillas and chimps seem to recognise their friend/troup member but not themselves. I wonder if its pointing towards that they have a sort of "we-awarness" rather than self-awareness. Yes they can recognise each other as separate individuals with separate wills but do not have the same recognition of them selves. Very very interesting video. Maybe early humans had a similar we-awarness and that self awareness developed as a result of realizing if everyone else has a separate will and my brother is a diffrent individual from my sister hence I too am a separate individual.

A comment like yours is comforting; - after reading numerous comments calling for the dismantling of these sadistic mirrors, - after my wife and I have spent days alone in the Gabonese forest to maintain our mirrors and many photographic traps, change memory cards, batteries, clean lenses, remove fallen branches in their field of vision, walk up the creek beds to find areas where the animals cross to install new traps etc... Soaked by tornadoes, the body is covered with insect bites of all kinds (horse flies, gorilla flies, tsetse flies, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work is increasing due to the 95% humidity level. Then, back in the camp, we do the editing with for each video a description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on... It's a choice. Thank you. Keep watching the other videos on my channel and don't forget to read the attached description each time. You will learn very important information. kzbin.infovideos

@@XHB06400CANNES Know that your work is very much appreciated! In the old days of "letters to the editor" it was commonly understood that one letter to the editor of a newspaper, from a reader who took the time to write, actually represented 100 who shared similar views, but didn't write to the newspaper. The more we can understand the complex lives and tremendous intelligence of non human animals, the better to respect and protect their habitat, and to try and live in better balance with nature. Your brilliant hard work contributes to our better understanding. Thank you! They've never been introduced to a mirror, and never had it explained to them in their life. They honestly believe what they see is another ape. Plus they aren't too aware of their own movements, so when they see in the mirror copies exactly what they do, they don't realize it.

So they don’t necessarily recognize themselves, and see a “stranger,” but do they recognize their friends? Their friends are also behaving as if there is an intruder, just they are looking at a different one... Il faut alors explicitement toucher un petit triangle pour voir qu'il y a de nombreuses informations dans la description. Bref, dans la version mobile de KZbin, on peut parfaitement entrer un commentaire sans avoir conscience de la présence d'une description. *Have you been able to recognize your own image clearly by leaning over a puddle of rain water or a a river or a lake?* Maybe just your shade on a sunny day? Well done, thank you, much to learn for we humans not yet human. The etymology of MIRROR: from Latin mirari “to wonder at, admire”. See MIRACLE: from Latin mirus “wonderful, astonishing, amazing”. See SMILE: from PIE smei- “to smile, laugh”.

Once a chimpanzee realises the reflection is himself, which does happen, they usually use it to investigate their faces and bodies. As a mirrored image is rare in nature it may take them some time to figure out, but they will none the less.

No dog no home cat, have the intellectual capacity to recognize themselves in a mirror: If your dog/cat sees your reflection in the mirror, it is able to turn its head to check that you are present behind it. Your dog/cat is therefore able to recognise you in a mirror, but not itself. After the first few mirror exposures, your dog/cat will consider the odourless mute animal in the mirror, is without interest and does not present any danger for itself. To date, no cat, no dog in the world, however intelligent it may be, is able to recognize itself in a mirror. @@XHB06400CANNES I actually don't have problems with having a few subtitles which explains what is going on in the video including the behaviour and certain clues or aspects from the animals. The only problem I had though was this video and its subtitles that doesn't make sense. On the other hand, I do appreciate all your other videos. It shows how animals react on certain objects they are unfamiliar with.

*Stupid as you would be, if your parents had not made you learn the mirror practice* In very intelligent apes as in very intelligent humans, self recognition in a mirror is not innate. It is the result of the more comfortable training in the mirror at home among young humans in the company of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. Among chimpanzees, in the insecurity of the jungle learning at the same time as his parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. *Front of a mirror, each alpha chimpanzee (silverback) effectively recognizes his neighbour among the reflections, he also notices the presence of a stranger he has never met: his image he does not know. Why is he here? Why would I share with this unknown silverback the right to mate with the females in our group? In an attempt to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), with whom he does not want to share the females of his group, this chimpanzee shows his large build, in standing in a bipedal position, stretching out his arms, ruffling his hair and shows his strength with heavy slaps on the ground. His reflection taking the same attitude, he hesitates to fight it.* Watch my videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKrOgKOaiMh0n7c kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5K2XqSioNZ2mdU Hearing the cries of the other chimpanzees of the group (pan hut), perched in the trees around the mirror, he cannot remain calm and must assume his status of dominant male and scare away this intruder. Under these conditions, learning to use the mirror is not possible and cannot be successful. Don’t forget after watching to read the description attached to each of my 180 videos published on my KZbin channel you will know very interesting information about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle kzbin.infovideos
