This video isn't a topic that you would normally talk about, but we still watch because you make good videos. If you want to make a video that you wouldn't usually make and it gets little views then it means you don't make your videos interesting enough.

Season 3 of Next Gen, or just starting with Deep Space 9 or Voyager. Any of the shows you'll also just need the mindset that there's like 20+ episodes a season, so they're not always going to be good. But if you stick through it, it'll probably be worth it.

That's actually been a part of great storytelling for hundreds of years. It's just that it wasn't put into words until quite recently. Star Trek didn't invent it. And in the real world, not even Genghis Khan, Stalin, or Hitler were villains. Yes each was responsible for the deaths of millions of people. But they were heroes , Patriots, or doing other good things in the eyes of some. It's about perspective, really.

I'd like to know your thoughts on Star Trek: Prodigy! My dad (who is a long-time fan of star trek) is really enjoying it, and I (completely new to star trek) am also having a great time with it. We both like it for the same reasons, mostly: The worldbuilding and lore is astounding to us, and we've found that the show has a lot of great references for old fans, while keeping them understandable for new fans. I have also noticed a theme of keeping peace rather than fighting wars, and though there are still those "season finale" episodes where there are big battles, it's still in the name of peace. Anyway I'd like to hear what your thoughts are on prodigy, if you've seen it lol
@AdamCarra5 ай бұрын
I haven't seen any prodigy, seems like it might be aight I know a lot of trekkies actually like it. I just haven't been able to get into almost any NuTrek. I've watched some clips of Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks, but I just can't stand the marvely humor in them and they're way too steeped in nostalgia. The only nutrek I've enjoyed was Picard season 3, which was mostly good especially the first 4 episodes, and the rest ranged from ok to too nostalgy, but not enough to ruin the whole season. I do want to give it an honest shot at some point, but for now I'm still just loving looping through tos-tng-ds9-voy-ent. Also I do want to say that, although I am a nutrek hater, people should like what they like, and I made a conscious effort to keep nutrek hate to a minimum in the video.

If I may present another perspective on this concept (bear with me on this): According to the Biblical worldview, mankind (in this context, synonymous with "sentient life") is inherently sinful, and in fact doomed to increasing corruption without divine intervention. The narrative application of this presents the "hero" as someone resisting their continued degradation, contrasted against the "villain" who has given themselves up to it. The "redeemable villain" is one who is convinced to begin resistance thereof, just as the "doomed hero" is one who gives up their resistance. Thus the "irredeemable villain" represents a refusal to change, even when (and perhaps especially when) the possibility is directly offered. The purpose of narrative is to express concepts in creative ways. The "redeemable villain" shows that compromise can lead to positive resolution, which is an encouraging (if realistically inconsistent) message. On the other hand, the "irredeemable villain" demonstrates the self-destructive nature of "villainy," thereby serving as a warning to the audience. Both have a function, though how much and in what way the message resonates with each individual is somewhat relative. That being said, I too prefer the more diplomatic resolutions, though for a different reason. For *me*, the most interesting aspect of Star Trek was its depiction of unique cultures and the ways in which they interacted with each other; "redeemable villains" more strongly depicted this than "irredeemable villains." I believe the presence of the latter is beneficial to further emphasize the significance of the former, but their stories are usually the less memorable (with some significant exceptions, but that's another discussion.)

@AdamCarra5 ай бұрын
DS9 is even my favorite Trek series, but I wanted to focus on Trek more as a whole. Also I wanted to focus more on the subversive/surprise aspect of how Trek deals with its villains, and the Cardassians are sorta introduced right out of the gate as a complex morally gray society. I do wish I could have found a way to talk about them more in the video, I tried to work in clips from Duet and Cardassians(the episode), but with the main 3 episodes I was already highlighting it was a lot to tackle for this video. But yeah the Cardassian stuff is amazing, maybe someday I'll find some angle or idea to make a video about that.

@thelastgogeta5 ай бұрын
You can dodge the mess bullet if you engage with short IP which end quickly or with few adaptations. If it runs over 40 years with consistently changing hands, it is pot luck if even parts of it are enjoyable looking back as a newbie or forward as a vet. No guarantee that they won't get big enough to become a franchise 20 years later though.

Remember when section 31 tried created a virus to kill an entire species? Remember when Picard was reprimanded by Starfleet admirals for not poisoning the Borg? Or when Sisko let someone die to manipulate their people into an alliance? How do you reconcile these things with starfleets core value?
@AdamCarra5 ай бұрын
1) I just hate section 31 as a concept. 2) That's sorta the main point of the beginning of the video, we all cherry pick ideas and create our own Star Trek. 3) For some things like with Sisko, or the various admirals, people within star fleet all have different perspectives, Picard himself was all for killing all the borg and it wasn't until he had a whole little character arc that he changed. In my idea of Star Trek the systems of the federation and star fleet will always eventually work themselves out and there's enough good people in the right positions.

This video does a very succinct job at demonstrating why Abrams' approach to Star Trek was so philosophically immature. If Adam continues with these kinds of videos, I might have to add him to the likes of SF Debris, Jessie Gender, Red Letter Media and Steve Shives, for being one of the best Star Trek commenters on KZbin. 🖖🏽
@AdamCarra5 ай бұрын
I've never heard of any of them besides rlm, I'll check them out because I'm starved for good trek KZbin content. One channel I really like is Junkball, they're more focused on ships and detail over story content, but still really fun.
@honesto46965 ай бұрын
@@AdamCarra If you like Junkball, check out the channels, We Travel by Night and OTOY. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed. But as for my previous suggestions: 1. As far I can tell, SF Debris has to be one of the oldest sci-fi TV and movie reviewers on KZbin. By now he's had to have reviewed at least 80% of all of Star Trek movies and television episodes and he does it with a healthy dose of comedy. The only reason he's not bigger, is because through no fault of his own, he's been repeatedly deplatformed. He has 2 channels: SF Debris and SF Debris Red. 2. Steve Shives runs an all-around leftist politics and geek culture channel, which of course includes a lot of Star Trek reviews, essays and satire. I don't agree with quite a few of his opinions on Star Trek, but he explains his positions quite well. So, I don't think he says anything in bad faith. It's healthy to hear different opinions. 3. Jessie runs 2 KZbin channels : Jessie Gender and Jessie Gender After Dark. She is probably KZbin's most in-depth Star Trek essayist. She is a trans-woman, lefty and filmmaker. J.K. Rowling legitimately hates her. Plus she just released a sci-fi short film on Nebula, titled IDENTITEAZE. It stars Maggie Mae Fish and John de Lancie (yeah Q) and a few other performers you may recognize.

I feel like if humans were actually granted a utopia to live in, they would end up rejecting it. As much as we may deny it, mankind ultimately prefers struggle and strife to idyll and harmony, hence why self-deletion rates go up during peacetime and down during wartime with shocking consistency, indicating an actual causal link and not mere correlation by happenstance. There is a certain electricity in the air in a country at war, as well as a certain patriotic comradery, bringing all constituent parts of the nation (young and old, rich and poor, etc.) closer together. And furthermore, a great deal of humans have a deep yearning to find someone, some master, worthy of kneeling to and obeying. I don't fault mankind for this tendency, I just feel it is worth pointing out. I'm not particularly upset that humans are this way, to be honest. Makes the story more dynamic. To exist is to be the film as well as the viewer, to be a player and an audience member, and ultimately, to be figments in the imagination of God. I find science fiction that can deal with the duality of mankind's soul with more nuance than just "WAR BAD, RACISM BAD, CORPORATE GREED BAD, RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE BAD!" And frankly, being hammered over the head with those basically universally agreed-upon and utterly trite thematic pronouncements is how I sum up most of not just Star Trek, but even most of sci-fi in general. I believe this is actually precisely what sets Warhammer 40K apart from the bulk of sci-fi, thus explaining its massive popularity as it stands out in spite of recycling tons of other sci-fi tropes and mashing them together to create the general factions and aesthetics. It is its ethos, its philosophy, that sets it apart. It is this ethos that also garners it more controversy than most sci-fi, as a lot of people end up seeing it as right wing. It is funny to think about how prior to the French Revolution, the concept of the "right wing" would have been pretty much synonymous with the principles of sound statecraft and living a morally upstanding life, like pretty much just "Being a good Christian" or "Not being a traitor" or whatever. It was the water they swam in, so to speak, so like fish they had no term for it. We are facing a fairly similar world today, just in reverse. More and more things that were explicitly radical far left positions, at least in terms of social politics, are now so commonplace that people calling themselves "conservative" support them. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if your average kid from Gen Alpha would actually find the original Star Trek series highly offensive and see it as espousing a "far right" worldview, in their book. Just goes to show how nebulously most people use these terms, not really based on any unchanging definition of either half of the political spectrum but rather defining everything that isn't cutting edge Progressivism "far right", so like for instance most leftist young people will call someone that holds the politics of a 1990s Democrat to be a "far right fascist extremist" or whatever, like for being against gay marriage and against reparations, for instance. Therefore, I take any talk that is meant to make people weary of 40K as though it'll "radicalize" you into a "Nazi" with a heaping pinch of salt. I should go back and actually try watching Star Trek again. Oh here's something that will piss Trekkies off: I thought the J.J. Abrams movies were ALRIGHT. Yep, I said it, I thought they were decent action sci-fi movies. I might even go so far as to say I would prefer rewatching those to rewatching some of the less popular older films. Hey, what can I say, some of them just don't grab me and hold my attention. They can be a bit dry and dialogue-heavy.

@@AdamCarra It was a good way to explore what the crew would do in a hopeless situation without actually putting them in one. The captain sticks to her main goal to a fault (although she didn't know the extent of what would happen). We see how some characters deal with the constant loss of others, and how discussions of what to do progress. Although I think the part they did the best is how their goals change through the episode. It starts with hopeful goals, "everything will be all right if we just keep going". Then when more and more problems happen it changes to "maybe we can recover what we have left". Finally and tragically it transitions to just being remembered.
