Rhaegar had two children with Elia Martell (Oberyn's sister) Aegon and Rhaenys. You remember Oberyn fighting the mountain and mentioning his nephews, then Rhaegar set his eyes on Lyanna and from there Jon was born. He is the youngest son and was born a year before Daenerys.

Just letting you know I watch more or less the whole of these (I skip some chapters). I really appreciate the format and requisite work you put into these - this is the first read-through series I've stuck to watching. I loved you gushing over how George writes Sansa haha; I am a male author myself, currently writing an ASOIAF fan fiction spin-off, and one of my perspective characters is a fifteen year-old girl. I love all my characters but I think about her probably the most, and get excited by the whole new world of female experience to explore and learn about. It's also fascinating to recognise what is shared human experience. I should take up cross-dressing lmao. It just goes to show that true creative writing is mysterious.

Catelyn is not trusting Littlefinger's love for her, she is trusting the whole code of the aristocracy. Nobles back up family members and people with whom they have relationships, 100%, because those are the people you can rely on. Littlefinger was fostered by the Tullys, and he's a nothing lord. That is huge, it's like a janitor's kid, getting an internship with a billionaire CEO. It created the opportunities for Littlefinger, and is the reason why he rose as high as he has. Littlefinger should be eternally loyal to the Tullys for that favor, and the idea of him betraying them should be utterly inconceivable. And normally it would be, because no other nobles would trust a man who betrayed the noble family who supported him and gave him so many chances. Betraying the Tullys, in normal circumstances, would be the end of Littlefinger's career. Littlefinger resents the Tullys because they did not cancel all their plans and disrupt an important alliance in order to give Catelyn as a sex toy to a boy she did not love or desire, and he hates the Starks for getting what he wants, and for Brandon defeating him in a duel he himself demanded. In the case of Littlefinger, all that the Tullys' generosity did, was create a sense of entitlement. And now he hates and resents the people who "deprived" him of what he wanted. So he gets his thrills by playing mind games in order to prove to himself how much smarter he is than they are. He makes all those dirty jokes revealing his true feelings and interests to both mock Ned and to find reasons to think of Ned as an idiot and his inferior. He gets off on the thrill of getting away with it. Meanwhile, Ned ignores most of what he says, because he is genuinely better than that and making a big fuss over empty words is beneath him. Catelyn loves Ned, and he knows it, so he doesn't need to prove it to Littlefinger. It's only when he legitimately insults and degrades her by suggesting to Ned that she is a prostitute and that she is currently, presently, in the brothel, that he actually gets mad.

20:06 Rhaegar was married to Elia Martell, sister of Oberyn Martell. They had two children together. It's important to know that for later books. 57:39 Lord Beric Dondarrion is the guy from Game of Thrones who keeps getting killed and then revived by the Lord of Light. The name Dondarrion might also be familiar to you because Criston Cole from HotD is son of the Steward of Blackhaven which is the Dondarrion's castle.

I feel that one of the most interesting things about Bran III that's easy to miss is that the reason why Bran doesn't remember Jaime pushing him out of the window is because the Three-Eyed Crow deletes Bran's memory of the event for some unknown reason.
@benoliver7548 Жыл бұрын
@@pilarslittlestudioI don't have a physical edition of the book to reference an accurate page number but from referencing a horribly formatted pdf of the book online it looks like it would be near the end of the first page or beginning of the second page of the chapter. I've copied and pasted the relevant quotation below: "Bran was staring at his arms, his legs. He was so skinny, just skin stretched taut over bones. Had he always been so thin? He tried to remember. A face swam up at him out of the grey mist, shining with light, golden. "The things I do for love," it said. Bran screamed. The crow took to the air, cawing. Not that, it shrieked at him. Forget that, you do not need it now, put it aside, put it away. It landed on Bran's shoulder, and pecked at him, and the shining golden face was gone."

I think that that interpration is definetly a part of it (and probably the major takeaway), but I also think that there might be more to that line that hasn't been revealed yet in the published books. There is one theory in paticular that I think might explain it, but the main evidenece for that theory which makes it seem a lot more plausible won't come till much later on in the series and I'd rather not spoil that for you.

I agree that King Robert is not a good man or father but he was a great warrior when he was younger. Maybe not so great after all the years of heavy drinking😅. Sansa talking with the Hound was also a standout chapter for me. Also I think Hounds face is way more damaged in the books than in the show. "The left side of his face was a ruin. His ear had been burned away; there was nothing left but a hole. His eye was still good, but all around it was twisted mass of scar, slick black flesh hard as leather, pocked with craters and fissured by deep cracks that gleamed red and wet when he moved. Down by his jaw, you could see a hint of bone where the flesh had been seared away."

Most people figured out that Lyanna was Jon's mother & Rhaegar his father long before the TV show was made, even though it was not revealed in the published books (four were written by the time they started filming). In fact, there is a rumor that George Martin tested the show-runners when they asked to make his books into a show, to find out if they were real fans, by asking them who Jon's parents were. Most of the clues to his parentage are in the first book, because the secret is more relevant to Ned than anyone else. Jon's parentage is not about him having special magic blood, or a claim to the Iron Throne, it's about Ned and what he has done and what he has endured because of this secret, including problems with his wife, and having to lie to his king & best friend in addition to his whole family, and the way he has to make the boy he loves as a son suffer for his own protection. For instance, there are lots of cases of bastards coming to court, and prospering. A Hand of the King can always find a good job for his natural offspring, and even a high-ranking marriage, if not as good as the ones Robb, Bran & Rickon could get. King Robert would not give two shits if Ned wanted to seat his bastard son at the high table with the Starks & royals, and he'd enjoy Cersei's annoyance. Ned is keeping Jon away from the high table at the feast, he is saying he can't bring Jon to court, because he can't take the chance that someone might recognize Rhaegar's features in Jon. That's also why he kept him at Winterfell, instead of finding a foster family, the way that Catelyn wanted, so he could control who got to see Jon and protect his identity.

Stannis proposing to outlaw brothels tells you why Littlefinger could only support Joffrey and stop Ned from removing him. Littlefinger had no future at the court of a king like Stannis. This is also the reason he went to Renly and offered to open him the gates of King's Landing in S2.

Ned doesn't know why Jaime killed the mad King. , or he thinks Jaime did it to save himself or for his father. . ( almost nobody knows why Jaime did it , and the wildfire) Jaime is almost the only one who knows. Everyone else is dead . A kings guard is supposed to die to protect his king , killing a king on a battlefield or in a duel is honourable, but murder or stabing him in the back is not. But Robert and a lot of other people were glad Jaime did it do they didn't have to. .

Westeros Map !!

You're in exactly the type of place GRRM was inspired to write this stuff by! Famously an experience at Hadrian's Wall inspired The Wall and the Night's Watch! Great analysis of Littlefinger, son of a bitch that he is! I really like the chicken-egg interplay with his lust for power to prove himself and his desire for Catelyn. Is she a trophy to prove his worth? Is the power a token to gain her affection? Interesting stuff. In the immortal words of the Girls Gone Canon podcast (which you should check out after you read the series to avoid spoilers)..."GET A JOB, LITTLEFINGER"!! I think Jon at this point has no idea how behind-the-scenes politics works, so he sees Benjen (who is surely protecting him, if only in the sense that if he got special treatment, he'd get the "Lord Snow" treatment 10x worse than he already does) as a symbol of who he could be, when Benjen is pretty much running (in my opinion) from Winterfell stuff to be there in the first place. Tyrion at least gives us an idea what even educated Southerners think about the Wall and the Night's Watch, I think. Love to see you enjoying book Renly. Only seeing him from the perspectives of others makes his appearance-oriented presentation really come across and I think makes him intriguing since we don't know what he's thinking. Robert would've made a great lord of Storm's End (not that this would make him a good PERSON), I think, but he's an incredibly shitty king. I get the idea that his charisma could forge alliances (and it did, tbf) but it puts this totally checked-out manbaby in a job of CONSTANT pageantry and politics that he's totally unsuited for. For instance, if he weren't monarch, he probably wouldn't have needed to marry Cersei etc etc etc. I guess the old alliance didn't trust the Lannisters and were just relying on Jon Arryn to hold him in check (though that didn't seem to go so well). I know he has a bit of Targaryen blood through his grandmother but that hardly seems necessary in an armed rebellion. Great catch on the Arya - Jon - Lyanna sharing the "Stark look." The theory that Lyanna and Rhaegar are Jon's parents dates back to at least 1997 haha (the book came out August 1996), so people have been constructing elaborate theories in this fandom for multiple decades now. There's some great stuff out there, and some of it (like R+L=J) is pretty much certainly accurate. Per Daenerys, I think certainly the dreams affect the present! I think the whole point of prophecy or whatever is that you probably do something in response to it. The whole "self-fulfilling" element. Many characters in this series are motivated by their interpretations of mystical things they have seen or felt or experienced (and I think Viserys' speech to Rhaenyra in HotD is from Ryan Condal's interpretation of this). I'm really glad to see you loving Bran's visions and the Dragon Dreams etc, because these parts of the story are possibly the largest single element that GoT left out and they're a HUGE part of the books (Dan & Dave expressed a troublingly flippant, imo, disdain for the "magical" elements of the series). I think the series sort of rests on how our perspectives on ideas motivate us towards our ends and the question of destiny, hence the tight POV structure where we only see a specific person's reactions to events. Sansa II is easily one of the best chapters in the whole book and you perfectly encapsulate why it needs to be from Sansa's POV, per what I was just talking about vis a vis perspectives. Ser Beric Dondarrion will def show up again ;) Really loving these videos so far, Pilar! You are picking up on tons of elements for a first time reader and packing a HUGE amount into these videos (speeding up the footage to keep the hour runtime even)! Obviously it helps having seen the shows first, but you still deserve credit for not coasting on the plot you think you know. I think you're the first reader I've ever seen doing a first read of the book series AFTER having seen HotD, as well. I'm glad to see you saying it's taking longer than you expected to try and do a weekly(!!) video. Take your time and keep delivering this level of quality and it will be well worth the wait. I am also reading the series now and just got to where you are tonight; would love to be able to keep up together! I also love how much thought you’re putting into this. Specifically, I really like a few things: 1) how much you hate Robert (lol). I don’t completely agree with you but I ENTIRELY get where you’re coming from and the fact you feel so strongly means you’re just as ridiculously invested in these characters as I am, which makes me feel like you’re a kindred spirit. Also, 100% agree that scene of Robert yelling at Cersei and pushing Jaime to the ground is pure cringe 2) that you acknowledged that Joffrey appears outright likable through certain POVs and that there is some hypocrisy to Ned’s view of Jaime as well. 3) your appreciation of the more “traditional” female experiences in Sansa and Dany’s chapters. This makes me excited to get to the point where we’re reading Brienne’s POV.

Yes, book readers guessed Jon's parentage right in the first book. It was a pretty common theory early on. But someone guessed it while watching S6 before the reveal. Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKCqf5l5gcugmKs

No it’s not Jon. Rhaegar had kids with Elia martell before kidnapping and or eloping with Lyanna both of whom supposedly died during the Lannister occupation of Kings landing
@kroegger9154 Жыл бұрын
@@pilarslittlestudio The mad king Aerys had 3 (living) children with his wife and sister (Targaryens... ;) ) Rhaelle: Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys. Rhaegar is a lot older than his siblings and is the heir. Rhaegar married Elia Martell (from Dorne and Oberyns sister) and had 2 children with her: Aegon (yes another one...) and Rhaenys (these 2 children are nephew and niece to Dany despite them being older than her). So while being married to Elia, Rhaegar crowned Lyanna Stark as his Queen of love and beauty at the tourney and ran away with her. Because of Rhaegars "kidnapping" of his sister, Brandon Stark (Neds older brother) went to Kings Landing and demanded her back and threatened Rhaegar. Aerys imprisoned Brandon and demanded Rickard Stark (Brandons and Neds father) to come to Kings Landing to answer for his sons crimes and there killed them both. This triggered the Rebellion. After some fighting the war seemed lost for the Targaryens so Tywin Lannister (being neutral until this time) went to Kings Landing and lied to the king Aerys that he would help him against Robert. When Aerys opened the gates for the Lannister army, they betrayed him and sacked the city (thats when Aerys wants to burn everything and gets killed by Jaime). In this sacking it is rumored that Gregor Clegane "The Mountain" (Sandor Clegane "The Hound"s brother) as a bannerman of Tywin broke into the chambers of the Princess Elia Martell and killed her and Rhaegars son Aegon before raping and also killing Elia. Rhaenys (Rhaegars and Elias daughter) got also killed by someone. Then Ned came to the fallen city and took it for Robert, and when Robert arrived Tywin presented him the corpses of the little children to show Robert that he is truly loyal to him and helped fight the Targaryens. This is the scene which Ned remembers the corpse of Rhaegars son Aegon. Hope this clears it a bit. Dont get too discouraged when you are confused there are a lot of characters in this story, which makes it incredible rich and exciting to read imo. Looking forward to the next episode. :)

Pillar only hates Robert because she loves Cersei so much. It's not Cersei, yo. It was Robert all along. 😆 I think he's not a bad man, he's just miserable cause he lost Lyanna and hates ruling basically. The scene where he gets mad toward Cersei in front of everybody, it was all planned. Cersei wanted to provok him saying he cannot fight so he would be mad to fight. So that the Lannisters would kill him during the tournament. As far as Renly, really one of my favorite characters in the book as well. For one thing, he looks pretty different. He's a muscular man with long black hair. Almost like a dark hair Jaime. And he is indeed hilarious and likeable. When they do the whole assembly after Arya is captured and Arya tell of her story with Joffrey and how she desarmed him, Renly laughed so much about the story that Robert pissed off had to told them to get him out of there. About the moment with Sansa and the Hound, I'm towards the end of the second book now and this scene remains my favorite of the whole series still. So powerful and well written. In the show, when Sansa hear about the story of how Sandor got burned, it's Littlefinger that tells her during the tournament. But here it comes from the mouth of The Hound himself and it's nuts that they didn't put it in the show. So good. Especially since she is so scared of him esp. the way he purposely tries to scare her but then after he tell her his story, she has a different perception of him. Really great scene by two different people. Concerning Joffrey he's less extra in the books(so far). And there's also the fact that he is younger and beautiful looking like Jaime with long blond locks. So he comes off as less of an obvious monster.

@@pilarslittlestudio Pillar, that's not my theory, that comes straight from Varys' mouth! lol He said this to Ned that the Lannisters were trying to provok Robert into getting into the tournament so he would be killed there in an "accident". Cersei is not a saint. That's what this scene was about. As for Joffrey, it's not like he saw Robert in battle. Sure he was neglectated but he never saw Robert killing people. Joffrey had a natural inkling for sadism that was all his own.

I hate to be negative but I have to agree. Game of thrones started to go down in quality a lot after season 4 and it wasn’t even George’s fault since the show runners chose to ignore a lot of plot lines from the books or chose to shorten them so much that they weren’t similar anymore.

I feel like I need to explain Robert. Yes he is all those things. But you have to think how broken he is. And how becoming king finally broke him completely. He didn't want any of this. Literally nothing. He didn't want to be king he didn't want cerci and his kids. He drinks to drown his pain and shame. And over time living his life if you can call it that he becomes bitter. And I think he hates everyone including himself. I'm not defending him at all but I feel sorry for him. He was a good guy and everything that happened absolutely broke him.

The Warden system is GRRM's worst idea IMO. The geographical areas and roles of command are not defined. As a rank, Lord Paramount is sufficient and Wardens seem completely unnecessary.
@Weeby_historian Жыл бұрын
I feel like those titles are more ceremonial than practical. I mean there’s been no history of actual military command along the lines of the warden system so it was probably just a way for Aegon the Conqueror to placate his most proud and powerful vassals

Ned has no idea that Jaime murdered the king to save the people of the city from being burned. NO ONE knows! Jaime refused to tell anyone because he was butthurt that Ned dared to judge his actions. The whole point of the Kingsguard is that they are supposed to be more loyal to the king than to their families, but what it looks like is that Jaime said "LOL, nope!" and killed the king because his father was attacking the castle. Also, Aerys was a feeble middle aged man, and Jaime was a highly skilled knight. He could have arrested him or restrained him. Instead Jaime just chopped down an unarmed man in defiance of his sacred vows and then sat on the throne, an act of disrespect and possibly even treason, and made jokes about it, like it's no big deal. Ned has no idea that Jaime was serving a greater good, because Jaime is behaving like an asshole and, incidentally, not telling anyone that there are wildfire bombs planted all over the city. The Lannisters all (ALL, even Tyrion) think they are better than everyone else, and that the rules other people have to follow don't apply to them. That's where we get "by what right does a wolf judge a lion?" A more charitable interpretation is that when Jaime saw that Ned disapproved of his action, and he realized that Ned might still question him, or doubt his claims, or might even STILL condemn Jaime's kingslaying if he knew the whole truth, so he decided not to tell, so he could pout and brood about how persecuted he was, rather than listen to men of honor tell him he did wrong.
