The legendary judoka Anton Geesink from the Netherlands, was an outstanding figure in the world of judo. In addition to having tremendous strength, being 198 centimeters tall and weighing 120 kilograms, Geesink was also a superbly trained and very technical wrestler. Anton Geesink became the first non-Japanese to win a world title. He is also one of only two non-Japanese to achieve the tenth dan in judo. However, Anton Geesink is most remembered for his victory that shocked the world when he won the gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Anton Geesink was my Sensei when I was about 13 years old. I can remember that I was very much impressed by the size of his feet. They were enormous. I was wondering where he bought his shoes. He was a very kind, soft-spoken man who had always a smile on his face. He was born in Utrecht in a neighborhood with a notoriously bad reputation. He built a dojo in that neighborhood and I thought it was big when I was young but now when I visit Utrecht again (I live in the UK now) it looks tiny.

I attended a tour he did in the states, in Florida in 68 or 69. His uke was a Frenchman around 6 ft tall. We were in a high school gymnasium with no mats. Sensei Gesink had a speed that in itself contradicted any claims he won by size alone. The Frenchman had adapted his ukemi to handle the hard wooden floor. Regardless of side the cocked leg would strike the floor with the toes first. The slapping hand had the fingers bent into sort of a claw. This and the leg acted as shock absorbers. Considering how fast he was going; it was a good trick.

this is the problem with Judo for those who are small in size. If you are big, strong and a very well trained you can even win all the time. If you are small, strong and very well trained you may win every time. the former against the later, the later have lesser chance to win over the former. No wonder the European win the Tokyo Olympic against smaller Judokas.
