The full TV movie, A Girl Named Sooner. Never released on VHS or DVD.
Sooner (Susan Deer) is a young girl being raised by an eccentric and slovenly bootlegger (Cloris Leachman) in the backwoods of Indiana. It's only after she's taken away by the authorities and given to the childless couple of Mac (Richard Crenna) and Elizabeth McHenry (Lee Remick) that she comes to realize how ignorant she has been of the wider world. The going is difficult, but with patience and understanding, her new parents help her to acclimate to a more civilized life.
Air date: June 18, 1975

Let me say that growing up in the 60's and 70's, there was nothing longer than a summer's day. The minutes were interminably long, an hour could last longer than your whole life combined. You heard a cicada's entire song, and it seemed to last well into the next century. This film captures just some of the sense of wonder and wandering of that kind of time. How long did I sit in some secluded place, on a bare rock, in the corner of a field, just dreaming of things? My sneakers were always wet with dew from a walk in the fields or having dipped them from a tippy rock in the stream.

It was the summer of 1974 and my grandfather was in the hospital for cancer. My grandmother and I would walk everyday from the house to the hospital to see grandpa. They said there was nothing else they could do for grandpa and so grandma planned to bring him home and keep him comfortable for his last few months. Also this summer the neighbors down the street told me their old car was being used in the filming of a movie across the river in Vevay, Indiana. Vevay was where my great-great grandparents who immigrated from Switzerland in 1864 lived. My neighbors car, my immigrant grandparents old homestead, and a girl named Sooner. Some people have a hard time remembering what they had for supper last night, but I remember very well what I had for supper October 30, 1974. I only remember so well because that was when my grandpa died and I was so upset I didn't keep my supper down. After going to bed up came the spaghetti all over the stuffed animal I used to sleep with. A Girl Named Sooner was televised that next summer. It was a traumatic film in a traumatic period of my childhood. Thanks for the memories. Thanks for helping me revisit my own trauma's. I identified with Sooner and her experiences. Children need to grow up knowing they are loved and wanted.

This is an awesome movie and I am proud to say that my dad and his friend were the carpenters for this movie. They built the shack Cloris Leachman lives in, the wagon for the horse, and many other things. We lived in Aurora, Indiana and not far from the quaint town of Vevay. I'm not belittling your comment because you make a valid point. But would you please consider that many who watched it here on KZbin also saw it many years ago when we were about the same age as Sooner... We connected with Sooner and -- as movie magic can do -- were made to briefly feel as if we **were** her as we watched. So, the bird scene left a horrible, indelible mark on our young souls. Again, you're right. But please do not minimize the impact this scene had on us. Another viewer posted she was scarred by it. I was, too. And you know what? I'm grateful for that scar.

Yes, tragic how there are many children in various circumstances suffering as such, and how foster care often do not turn out to be a safe haven for them. Poor William must have had it difficult too, before Sooner started pampering him; this in spite of her own hardship. towards

Anyone else able to relate to Sooner's loneliness? As a child, after my mom died and my dad fell into a depression...well, sometimes I feel I'm still stuck there, even after I'm fine for a while, then it comes back at me. There were no extended family growing up. I just remember the loneliness and always trying to fit in and never ever fitting in, constantly moving from city to city, school to school: they always knew I was 'different' and never let me fit in. Now that I'm grown, things will change for the better I know it. Don't be shocked, but I'm in my forties, and it has been lonely up to now. I don't really know who to relate to people. Why don't they want to know me? I really want a family of my own: a loving husband and children more than anything I want to create and love my family even though my own fell apart. Please pray for me. I do love myself, it's what has supported me through all these years, but I want so much to love and be loved, more than anything else in the world I want a loving husband and children. Peace.

You're not alone, even when you feel like it. I too grew up without traditional family, was sick for a long time, have recovered but lost a lot financially, am divorced, no children. In spite of all this, I feel blessed. Hardships have taught me perspective a lot of people my age and even older lack. And I have learned another lesson: we don't make mistakes, mistakes make us, in that what we do wrong and the trials we endure strengthen us and build our character. Take care.

Goodness me some of these comments are worrying. A film is fiction not real. The bird and mule weren’t actually killed. This is acting and props. The film is a story to bring us close to the actions and lives others have. To open our eyes and minds. Make us think about others and our own reactions to them. Child and animal neglect and abuse happens, it’s very sad and horrid but through fiction and film we can learn a lot about the lives of others and how we feel about it. May be we can each do something to help children and animals be safe.

I always remembered the bird killing scene because I always identified with Sooner, doing anything to be accepted, but always finding that it is never enough. To some empathy comes naturally, manifest a seeming guided by the better angels of our nature, given a disposition towards kindness, almost a genetic disposition to be caring & its instinctual to help whereas a love of nature is inborn. To others they must be taught, without they falter in the unknowing & suffering ensues. It's a lesson oft overlooked in neglected inset to many cases & the more trivial aspects of life are taught instead. While there's no manual for raising children that perhaps teaches everything, covers every topic at length, there should be fundamental basics or strict guidelines to start with such as empathy taught as a core foundation of civility. Focus sought on what it means to have a conscience precisely & an adept stewardship overall subject to ourselves. Recognition all that is within our power, with this grand trust lies an enormous responsibility. While I've never known regret in a single instance of having done the right thing, but have suffered intense remorse over the wrong thing. We spare ourselves agonizing effects to act on Principle of well-being over all. It's a sacred trust really given to us to fulfill to the very best of our abilities, to exercise compassion whenever & wherever we can.

I remember seeing this movie as a child and it truly scarred me for life! The scene with the bird getting stoned haunted me for a very long time after I watched this movie. Then I saw it (well over 40 years later) uploaded here and was drawn to it because it sounded strangely familiar. Then the minute I started watching this, the first time I saw Sooner with the bird-it all came flooding back to me. I knew exactly what was going to happen and literally dread everything leading up to it. In hindsight it is interesting that I perceived the scene of Sooner, and the other children and Sooner’s bird, to be so horribly violent compared with what it is normally shown in tv and films today. The fact that those mean, insensitive children killed the bird was probably incredibly instrumental in teaching me compassion and to be anti-bullying long before I even knew the words for such things. I must have been about six years old when I first saw this and it was extremely traumatizing-and I never forgot it. It’s a great little movie. I wish kids watched things like this today. I think this is the sort of film that teaches young people how to treat other people respectfully and decently, and also to be kind to animals too. The fact that this was impressed upon my mind as one of the worst acts of violence I had ever witnessed surprises me after seeing it again, because it really wasn’t as terrible as I recalled, but it made a profound difference to have watched this when I was so young. I was definitely changed because of it. Thank you for sharing this with the public again!

I can relate to everything you are saying. I was nine when this came out. When it first aired was the only time other than right now that I saw it. I remember every scene so clearly like I just saw it yesterday. I was also affected by the bird scene. As bad as that scene was, and the way the girls treated Sooner on the school playground, I learned about compassion. That movie had a huge part of how I interacted with others as a kid as well as today. Truly a classic!

Thanks for writing this. This scene in this movie is the most disturbing thing I've ever seen, and now that I've seen it again I profoundly regret seeking it out. I was HAUNTED by this scene as a boy. For years it would resurface occasionally and I wished I could unsee it. The feelings of fear and impotence welled up after seeing this. Were I there for years I either dreamt I'd have bashed them all senseless before the bird was hit but I was also haunted by the prospect that I would've been too weak to do anything about it and just stood there powerlessly but very distressed. There would have been some consolation, some solace, had all those little reptile spawn been burned to death or run over slowly by a harvester.

I wish I had had a mother's love❤. I've never known what that is. I looked a lot like Sooner. I have and have been blessed with animals. They taught me how to love ❤️. My mother was jealous of the love my dad gave me, so she made him leave, robbing me of him and he of me. I'm in my sixties, and he is ninety now. We are finally aware of the manipulation. After watching this film, I can't stop crying. Crap. God bless all. I pray you will feel loved and joyful this Christmas 🎄. In Christ. Amen.

I'm very sorry... I myself didn't have a dad or a mother who loved me. But I too always had a very special connection with animals, which my mother hated and was jealous of, to see I had a gentle kind compassionate heart, and animals taught me how to love. I thank God for animals, and I have Jesus too who loves me and loves us. Merry Christmas.

I'm from Sallisaw, Ok. and movies like this really hit home with me. The movie "Where the Red Fern Grows" was made northwest of Sallisaw in Cookson Hill's. Billy's grandpa's old store is kept just like in the movie but they've added an old style restaraunt to it. It's called Jincy's Place. Movie's like this take me back and I sure appreciate it!! Keep up the good work!!!

Ah yes, 'Where the Red Fern Grows' ... My entire 6th grade class watched this together on 'Film Day' at school wayyyy back when. One of the boys started crying, and the bully girl group, led by my primary bully from 5th grade, started making fun of him, pointing, laughing, calling him 'baby' and any other stupid degrading names their pea brains could muster. I lost it. Can't remember the exact details, but I'm fairly certain I was sent to the Principal's office for the first time ever. Nothing physical, just sheer verbal fire and fury.

Mari Villegas. I love this movie. But you are correct. Little girls today don't dress like girls, they dress like they are still in their bedrooms or poll dancers! But we can only blame the source, parents who do the same thing.. Bed room wear for going out, or poll dancers and workout clothes that don't fit and show everything! Even clothes where you have to guess are they a little girl or something else??

What a worthwhile movie! Richard Crenna and Lee Remick can be very proud of telling this story when they look back on their careers. I have to remark on Cloris Leachman. She did such an excellent job in this role, immersing herself in her character. It took me a few minutes to recognize her, but I had noticed her name in the credits. It would have taken the half the movie, or more, if I hadn't been tipped off by the credits! Everyone did such a good job with this---pitch perfect acting all the way.

First time I have ever seen this movie, it can really tug on your heart strings. According to IMDB, the girl who played Sooner (Susan Deer) only had this one acting credit, which surprises me because she did a great job. I wonder why she didn't get any more roles? Maybe she didn't want to pursue acting? Cloris Leachman also did a brilliant job as the old bootlegger woman. This was made around the time she was acting on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and on the spinoff Phyllis.
