As someone who had never played DnD before playing DW, I can say I didn't have that much trouble understanding the rules and how it was meant to be played (Though I played together with others who had played DW before who could guide me). In contrast, when I eventually tried DnD, I found the character creation process staggering, despite having experienced DnD players guiding me through the process. Also, actually playing DnD, I didn't find that the greater number of rules added that much to the gameplay experience. I didn't dislike playing DnD, at all, but I think I preferred the fast and loose rules of DW more.

Thanks for the insight. My thoughts exactly. I don't want to go back to DnD 5 or something similar, because I can't imagine how all of those rules will benefit my game. That's just not how I run my games. Something like Old School Revival, Beyond the Wall and other Adventures for example, I can imagine playing and giving me a different tool set than DW.

It s a great system and lots of fun, the con I ve experienced is that it puts lots of burden on the DM s shoulders, deciding each time what a bad consequence will be for the players (loose gear, hit points, plot turns, etc). But still a game that gives lots of fun and speed

I instantly fell in love with this game a a 35 year old adult without the time to sink hours a week into a d&d campaign and search out a group of creative people as I’m not very interested in the crunch. DW does it all as no crunch all creativity makes an exponentially more enjoyable experience. The only downfall is the intellectual heavy lifting the game master has to do to keep things moving which cuts my games into about 3 one hour intervals with about 20 minutes in between or I’m wiped out by the end I’m dusting off the convention pelican case to run a DW game night with our HEMA club and one of the most valuable resources is “the inexhaustible list of provocative questions” to start a no prep for a larger table. I use ideas from pre made adventures when it’s just my wife and a friend or two as there isn’t enough table interaction to fully flesh out a world.

@@truskor In my experience, you have to let the players roll less in DW than other RPGs. But if level ups are still too frequent, you could modify the exp needed to 7+2xlevel or something, to make it slower. Also, as I understand it, PCs can't have attributes over 18, so no attribute bonuses above +3.

Is Dungeon World an RPG or is it a Storytelling Game? See: 0:15
@Sebbaasdungeon2 жыл бұрын
It's an RPG.
@captainnolan50622 жыл бұрын
@@Sebbaasdungeon I think it is a hybrid. By forcing the players to take part in world creation, you jar them out of the immersive aspect of roleplaying and into the 'real world' to participate in the storytelling (meta) aspect of the game, only to then have them get back into character and re-immerse into their 'role.' This can have the effect of disrupting the primary purpose of a 'role playing' game, i.e. to immerse themselves in a secondary world and play their role (not play the GMs role). It is a good game, but not strictly an RPG.

I think that's an arbitrary difference. RPGs are telling a story.

Hello, interesting thoughts. I haven't played D&D except ones on a gaming convent before I picked up DW, and that D&D session was in a mixed future and fantasy setup. So I can't say that I realy know how D&D worked before I played DW. In my child hood in the 80- ish I played a lot of Swedish RPGs titels. I picked up DW because of limited time for the RPG hobby, I need a game with minimal prep and maximum game play. I play it with my friends and with my kids with great success. I like the simpleness and I don't realy think the rules is to vague quite straight forward and if there is no move for the situation you can always fall back on old trusty Defy Danger move! :-)

I'm really invested in playing DW since it feels more approachable and action-oriented than DnD. Still love mich of the storytelling in DnD and many of the monsters that you face. Would it be possible to adapt DW rules to DnD?
@Sebbaasdungeon Жыл бұрын
Dungeon World is D&D with Powered by the Apocalypse rules. So yea, it's totally possible to play a classic DnD game in Dungeon World. Have a look at the third-party DW supplements on drivethrough. Those help to flesh out the Rules with more classes, spells and monsters, adventures, etc.

Seeba, I really enjoyed this review, and my favorite insight was your comment about not needing difficulty modifiers because you aren't interested in rolling to resolve simple tasks, just dramatic hard ones. Thanks from a fellow gamer in the USofA ! :) p.s. I found myself curious if your shelf contains games we may not have commonly, or if they are alternate European covers (assuming that's where you are). Would be fun to see either way.

Greetings from Germany! Sometimes we get complete new Artwork in course of the translation. German Version of Dungeon World for example is much better illustrated. Same with Barbarians of Lemuria, that borrowed the art from the french version. Other times, we get some special content, that is not in the English version. German Shadowrun usually has a chapter about Germany in the shadows. And sometimes we get some special books about German equipment and meta-plot. All of that is usually done by the initiative of the German publisher. The English publishers don't publish directly in Germany, but license the games out and the German publishes are responsible for what they do with it. We got some great, passionate people in the industry, that make these special German version possible. Still, there is just so much English material out there, and only a fraction has a German release. And even if it has, the German version usually lacks month, if not years behind. So I found that speaking English comes in handy when looking for RPGs. There are a few German RPGs that may or may not have an english translations. Das Schwarze Auge ( The Dark Eye), Midgard and Splittermond comes to mind.

It's unfortunate that this system heavily relies on the Dungeon Master (DM). I've had experience with Dungeon World (DW), and the combat aspect sometimes felt monotonous - the repetitive cycle of attack, receive damage, attack, receive damage. While DW aims for limitless possibilities, it becomes less engaging if the DM lacks a high level of imagination and storytelling expertise. Having fewer rules can lead to a loss of excitement relatively quickly in such cases.
