What's frustrating is that, it's totally fine to bring in a writer like that for the big moments. A great writer with a general knowledge of Kenobi and Vader should be able to write some dramatic banger scenes between them. But then you have to bring in a Star Wars "consultant team" to go over the writing for lore breaks and inconsistencies. They can catch things like "Why doesn't the Empire just follow up and investigate Bail?" (which they absolutely would) or "Really, a slap and a trenchcoat?" And that way we can get great dramatic writing and also not break the lore or make silly in-universe decisions.

Jedi: Fallen Order even proved you could do an Order 66 survivor confronting a conflicted female Inquisitor that gets stabbed in the stomach by Vader, complete with escaping the underwater fortress and using the Force to hold back leaking water. All better directed, written, and brought to life with more time to flesh out the key characters. At least for me, Kenobi tried to imitate these past scenes causal audiences are unlikely to watch, due to disregarding animated content and not considering video games, but executed worse than those prior scenes. Not to mention his first fight with Obi Wan he was highly aggressive with him since he was treating him as if Obi wan has been training for 10 years. I wouldn't be surprised if Vader realized he was "pathetic" till then considering he even admits to him that obi wan regained his strength. It was only later when obi wan got out that ditch that he pushed back Vader and beat him. Ill never see the need to hate everything about star wars today. The beautiful thing about repeating the Ahsoka mask thing was the symbolism with it. That the two people closest to Vader broke him but it took his son to fully break through to him. They weren't enough to save him but Luke is. It makes 6 more powerful. Ahsoka took the right side of Vader's mask off and Obi did the left. Each did one half and saw Anakin inside and yet they couldnt save him. Luke was the one who got his mask fully off and brought Anakin out. It's such a beautiful ending and justifies itself by showing Ewan and Hayden together again and giving adults like me who grew up with the prequels (grew up with Hayden and Ewan and Natalie like OG fans did with Mark, Carrie, and Harrison) a continuation that we never thought we'd see again.
@englishlady97972 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I don't think there was any symbolism to this scene at all, nor was it thought out. They literally just copied the Ahsoka fight from Rebels. Its also stupidly inconsistent: in canon breaking Vader's breathing apparatus would literally have killed him within minutes. That's why he died in ROTJ: now thanks to Disney his breathing apparatus can be broken every 5 minutes and his helmet is apparently made of single layer plastic? Like really? In ROTJ there are two seperate parts to it, and Anakin cannot breathe, speak or see properly without it. I notice that the scene also oh so conveniently absolves Obi Wan of lying in ANH, even though it is not objectively true that Vader killed Anakin.

I feel like you might be missing the idea behind Obi Wan and Luke's conversation on Dagobah - and I can't blame you, I struggled with this for many years. It wasn't until a long conversation with my cousin that we worked out that maybe Obi Wan really isn't suggestion Luke kill Vader at all. As with anything, it requires a change in your perspective, a change in the way you interpret the scene. You know, looking at it "from a certain point of view." If you revisit that scene, Obi Wan never actually suggests Luke kill Vader - he only explains that he must confront him. It's Luke who replies "I can't do it Ben, I can't kill my own father," and Obi Wan responds with "Then the Emperor has already won, you were our last hope." He seems understandably disappointed, but I don't believe it's because Luke won't Kill Vader. I think he's disappointed in that Luke only sees one option - killing Vader. He's disappointed that Luke fails to see that confronting Vader doesn't necessarily mean killing him. That he's the only hope in turning his old friend back to the light side and restoring balance to the Force. As he states in A New Hope, "there are alternatives to fighting." Yoda eludes to this in the scene earlier in that the final test for Luke is confronting Vader and that this test will determine if he is truly a Jedi Knight. Neither Obi Wan nor Yoda ever suggest killing Vader, only confronting him. And as Luke is still learning, he hasn't yet seen that there are other options other than killing him - and that these other options are truly what it means to be a Jedi. With this in mind, you could interpret that what you're seeing from Obi Wan is disappointment and frustration that Luke fails to see this. Now as with anything, this is merely an interpretation, but once looking at it from this point of view, the scene finally started to make sense for me.

His grief his force ghost training… Vader should have lost and then be left for dead. Then the line in Return of the Jedi: ‘and now his failure is complete’ would have an added weight because Kenobi failed to kill him twice. And the: ‘Now I am the master’ line too. And Vader, now more angry than ever with Ben and having given a promise to the Emperor to find and kill him… He then just let’s Kenobi chill in Sand Land for 10+years until A New Hope…

My ideal "Kenobi" - It's a standalone film instead of a series - The central conflict is Kenobi's guilt and his inability to commune with the force (maybe make it so that he can't use the force at all at the start) - He meets up with Yoda so he can help teach him (Like he said he would in ep 3) - He learns that in order to gain peace he must let go of his guilt - Kenobi and Vader have a shared force vision (maybe multiple) and they have a kickass duel. - Kenobi defeats him and gains inner peace, now able to see force ghosts and become one himself when the time comes - Vader still says "You didn't kill Anakin Skywalker, I did" because that's a perfect line I don't think it made any sense for Obi-Wan and Leia to interact and know each other so well. Their duels where they spare each other were pretty dumb and made no sense for their characters. Vader and Kenobi at this point actively want to murder eachother. Making their duel a force vision neatly ties up this inconsistency Whether or not Kenobi is alive is left ambiguous in the eyes of the empire because from Tarkin's perspective a force vision is not a reliable sighting
@lanebowles81702 жыл бұрын

Also it seems strange that Bail didn't asked Ashoka to help him because according to the Ashoka novel they knew each other at the time Leia was kidnapped and she even worked with him at some point because of her involvement in the rebellion.

A couple of moments in this episode really made me feel like this could have been good with some proper re-writes and editing. The ones i can think of right now are: Even if it is mostly a copy paste from rebels, the vader/anakin scene with the broken mask was still very good, both in execution and storywise, Obi-wan just walking off makes no sense obviously, but with just a few edits that could have been fixed (vader collapsing and either having obi-wan not check if he's actually dead or having the inquistor and/or troops show up to save vader). The mix of Haidens voice and James Earl Jones was really good. The scene with Obi-Wan and Reva. I'm ignoring everything else that happened before this moment, but in a vacuum, Obi-Wan offering wise words and guiding her towards the light really felt like the Obi-Wan i have wanted to see ever since this series began, it was only now that we truly got it. I also like Moses Ingrams acting in this, i just feel it's sad that all the set up to get to this point has been so poorly written. The final scene between Obi-Wan, Owen (and technically to Luke), i don't know why but to me it felt like a cathartic moment, ignoring everything else, just having Obi-Wan meet Luke and say hello there. Yes i acknowledge the meme, but it's also very fitting, considering it's the first words we hear from A New Hope Obi-Wan. Over the course of watching this series i've reinforced my belief that Ewan Mcgregor is irreplacable as Obi-Wan. Not that the series itself has done much to help with that view, but he still shines through in several scenes. Having seen the entire series now, i feel baffled over the earlier episodes, how poorly they set up the events that take place. Skirting around the canon just to try to patch it up later, still messing with things like Leia's and Obi-Wans relationship to the point that their later (canonically) interactions make no sense... I could do without the series, but now that it's here, it has a very mixed bag of a few great individual moments and a lot of poor writing/editing which shows a lack of understanding of Star Wars or just people in general. And the shaky cam done in post in a bunch of episodes, especially episode 5... just stop, please. It looks horrible and does nothing to hide the poor choreography/tactics used in the non-lightsaber fight scenes. If you got this far, thanks for reading my rambling thoughts. :)

The scene with Qui-gon brought a tear to my eye. But not just because it was awesome to see him but because it points to what this show should have been. It should have been about obi-wan and him coming to terms with Vader, but not just obi-wan, but the entire Jedi order and how it failed Anakin. It should have bridged the PT Jedi with the Jedi in the OT. That they let midiclorians be more important then the spirit of the Jedi. They let dogma of no attachment blind them to the needs of Anakin. Take all the time with Reva and put it into flashbacks. Obi-wan, though seeing the failings of the Jedi comes to terms with Anakin/Vader, frees himself and helps him and yoda become the wise mentors we loved. This show like almost every LF project after the purchase is a complete failure of writing, vision, and understanding of what Lucas created. Star Wars is truly dead. A couple of good scenes don’t make up for this.

All episodes considered, this series really did almost feel more like a coming-of-age story for Leia than it did a journey of self-forgiveness for Kenobi. I appreciated everything that Ewan and Hayden put into the series-they gave their best and I wish they had been allowed to do more of it. Even though it could have been different, maybe better, I am still glad that we got we did. I feel like the Leia portrayed in Kenobi added something truly valuable to her story: By showing us what Leia was like as a young girl, how she came to care for the people in rebellion against the empire, and her taking ownership of the rebellion-all of which strengthens her image as a leader. It showed that her choice was not only a result of following her father’s lead, but it was also inspired by the strength and bravery of the people that she saw fight and die to fight evil. When she was getting herself ready and put on Talla’s holster, and then they stopped on a still of her standing there I honestly teared up. She had become the rebel princess that we all loved, who would someday to blossom into the leader the rebellion would follow. It really felt like our princess was back with us again... Blair has done just such a masterful job portraying her and I think that Carrie Fisher would have been very proud of her...

You have to remember that Luke knew Obi Wan more than Leia. She only knew him for as long as the show took place in the universe but as this is Luke and Obi Wan's first meeting, Luke had more time with Obi wan because of the fact that this takes place in 9 BBY, 10 years after ROTS. ANH takes place 9 years after the show giving Luke and Obi Wan more bonding time which obviously strengthens Luke's attachment with Ben. Leia knew Obi Wan as Ben in ANH when she says 'Ben Kenobi? Asking "Why didn't Kenobi kill Vader" is an ultimately unanswerable question. Not only the heavy hand of continuity forbids it, but it is not answerable due to pragmatic concerns (we want to sell Darth Vader toys), and primarily genre conventions. This is akin to asking "why doesn't Batman kill the Joker?" Within the melodrama of modern comics and movies that are intended for a general audience, heroes don't kill anyone unless A) they are faceless, nameless bad guys, and/or B) They are acting in active self defense (hot blood). If Vader were beaten and Obi Wan walked over and calmly cut his head off, the genre conventions would break, because it would feel like murder. Regardless of how one like to imagine the "real world" would work, Star Wars exists within an Action/Adventure family fare universe that doesn't support certain actions. Within that context, it makes perfect sense. I enjoyed this series immensely, and felt it had no more plot/dialog or character weaknesses than is typical with any Star Wars offering. Could it have been better? Sure! Could it have been worse? Oh, absolutely! I felt it delivered on its promises of a character arc for Obi Wan, interesting new characters, parallel story development, themes of redemption, forgiveness and transcendence, all while working as an acceptable bridge between RotS and ANH. No, it probably didn't check every box every Star Wars fan would agree was necessary. But that would be an impossible goal anyway. Excellent show!

Please point me to a time where Obi Wan, or any Jedi has killed a defenceless opponent and the act not been called into question. Okay, this comment is a bit long so strap yourselves in; Honestly, they should have switched focus with this series as a whole. Seeing Obi-Wan training and trying to commune with Qui-Gon should have been the main thing for him in this series as well as watching over Luke. Then you can add how he handles living on Tatooine in terms of everyday life and the potential dangers of the Dune Sea while also have a deeper look on how the Lars Homestead is operating. Meanwhile, Vader and the Inquisitors are out there hunting Force-wielders and insurgents threatening the Empire. We could also deep dive into Vader's thoughts and struggles too. But the key thing here is that Vader and Obi-Wan should NEVER meet or even SEE each other until A New Hope. But instead we got pointless fan service which doesn't do anything for the consistency of the plot. Normally I'm for fan service done well but this just felt sloppy. The lines spoken by Vader to Obi-Wan in A New Hope have far less impact and meaning now. I didn't mind seeing a young Leia, it was quite enjoyable at the start. The best for her though would be if they just kept her on Alderaan, never to be abducted and therefore never to meet Obi-Wan in the first place. That rescue mission together with Leia and Obi-Wan bonding like that made me so anxious about the plot of Star Wars in general. The Grand Inquisitor was useless and I did not like the actor’s approach on the character. The Third Sister (Reva) was intriguing at first but as the show went on she just felt like a try-hard and her motives were just out of place for me. I find that she knowing that Vader is Anakin is quite astounding in a bad way and never should have been a thing. The Second Sister in Jedi: Fallen Order was far more compelling and well-written than Reva and unfortunately she didn't live up to that level of character. Eventually, she just sucked and should have just died in the first 2 or 3 episodes of the show. The only parts that I truly enjoyed are the flashbacks of Anakin and Obi-Wan, which I still watch on repeat as it takes me back 20 years ago when AOTC was released. I was 7 years old and that movie made me a fan of Star Wars back then. Yeah, it's still quite precious to me even though ROTS is my favourite SW - movie. And of course, Vader tearing that ship apart and just owning Reva, showing how foolish she is for trying to kill Vader (although he should have killed her for real, just like Anakin did with Dooku). In general, this show is average at best in my opinion. I'm giving it a 5/10 but that's me being kind so in truth I would give this a 4/10.

I really hated this last episode. You could pick nearly every scene apart. Why can't a Star Destroyer overpower a tiny shuttle? Why can't the Empire chase both Kenobi and the shuttle? Why would Obi-Wan let Vader live, only to ask Luke to kill him 14 years later? Why can Qui-Gon now appear as a full Force ghost? Those are merely the first few that come to mind, not to mention the countless things Reva has changed! When it comes down to it, I think Star Wars isn't for the hardcore fans anymore. Speaking about the show as a whole, it is very worrying that you have to ignore multiple canon-shattering moments just to have a good time, even more so when the nostalgia bating used to cover it up seems to be working on most fans. No, I don't think the show is good because Obi-Wan said a meme. People's standards are hilariously low.

It's hilarious because this show is literally for the hardcore fans. It's just the fans are zo stuck on legends they haven't bothered to read actual canon

💯💯💯. This episode was baffling

Nah. It has its problems, but the scene between Obi-Wan and Vader was pretty cool. Obi-Wan just couldn't bring himself to kill him.

star wars has many good moments that demonstrate the strength of drawing parallels, but the fight between vader and obi wan was not subtle at all about it. all the references to ahsoka’s duel really took me out of the show and just made the duel feel like a cheap copy

Doomcock/Overlord DVD brought up a good point about Reva in this ep... she had literally NO MOTIVATION to go find Luke and try to kill him... her entire journey was to get close to Vader to kill him for what happened during Order 66.. when she was left for dead by him and the Grand Inquisitor, her journey was over... killing Luke accomplishes NOTHING for her cause, so her suddenly stopping short to kill LUke had NO IMPACT on her arc once again...

This was so obviously glaring, and I don't see this as nitpicking, it didn't make a bit of sense.

@@gator7082 It really isn't nitpicking... it is literally storytelling motivation 101... they carried her story on because they always planned to have her own spin off, whether Obi-Wan the series itself had a 2nd season or not

and before anyone says she thought she could somehow still get revenge on Vader by killing his son... even Star Wars Theory got this wrong... nowhere in Bail's message, does she know WHO that boy is, who he belonged too... they never call him Luke Skywalker, or even Luke at all... they just call him the boy on tattooine with Owen... that's it
