I just received mine. They are great people to work with. They do beautiful work and get back to your emails very quickly. I am in no way affiliated with them, just a happy customer 👍

I also bought one, my son made the Logo and from the first time i used it it was perfect. I'd recommend them, even with the holidays it didn't take very long

FYI, they do say when ordering it that if you plan on buying other branding heads for your iron, that you should make sure it is very close in size to the one you originally ordered because they customize the wattage of your branding iron for the specific size head included in your initial order.

I use a digital thermometer on the iron to make sure i am branding at the same temperature each time. Once i find a suitable temp and can replicate that brand.

Very nice Don. The first thing I thought was could I make one from a soldering iron. It did a real nice job on the heavy leather.

Pascal, thanks for the comment. You might be able to fashion an electric branding iron using an old soldering iron. They use the same principal. I also know that there are some fairly easy ways to make the heads.

The leathers you used are not only different thicknesses but they are different leather. The first one was a chrome tanned leather. that type of leather won't really take a stamp even with the stamp handle and wetting it. The second leather was veg tanned leather. That is the type of leather that will take stamps and carvings etc. But you need to make sure it is damp first. Hope that helps clarify some. Thanks for the review. I'm about to order one of these guys...

Dylan thanks for the information. While I used to do some leather working many years ago I’m just beginning on understanding the different types of leather and tanning processes. Back then I got all my leather from Tandy so it was the right kind to carve and use my punches on. Although I used to always dampen my leather it never dawned on me to do it with the branding iron even though they suggest dampening wood. I did try dampening the wood but, as someone else pointed out, I didn’t do it the right way. I hope you enjoy your branding iron. Thanks for watching.

Goodday sir. How about adding a temperature controler in the line up? Isn't it possible to isolate the branding head from the branding iron itself? A safer option I would say. Cobus🐳

Hi Don! Someone suggested a drill press (I do not have one) in order to have consistency of placement. Is it really needed? Thoughts?
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
There is a drill press version and I considered that but it’s very limiting on where the brand can go and I think it’s more expensive. The brand can only be used on a board that will fit onto the drill press and its placement is limited by the depth of the drill press. I may want to brand a piece, like a table, after it’s assembled. I saw a video just this week that was helpful. The lady attached scraps of wood with double stick tape at a 90 digress angle where she wanted the brand. It looked like it worked very well.

Nice job! I'm looking for a branding iron to put a small logo on board cut slingshots I make. Not sure if I should go the extra for the electric. Thoughts?
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
If you brand a lot at one time it would pay to have the electric handle. With the torch version you’d ether have to keep it on or be constantly lighting it up to heat the brand. From what others have said one heating of the torch heated irons lasts just long enough for a couple of brands. With the electric handle, once it’s hot, it’s consistent heat.

I would have outlined the dog, letting the grain (life) of the wood show through the life of the dog. (Rather than dark shadow like form of burnt wood.) Same reason I shy away from making black borders in my black and white prints in my photography darkroom.

i bought my gearheart branding iron to use it on leather. i been having so much trouble doing it so, the leather keeps on shrinking, i keep finding myself applying pressure to all sides because it doesn't stump evenly. i been using the temperature control on high T and it burns and shrinks, tried lowering the T and it doesnt burn or shrinks but doesnt stump well... think im going to try a different type of leather, like in the comments going to make sure its the veg tanned leather. thank you.

I showed that problem with leather in my video. There’s at least one comment that told me why and what leather I needed to use. You might go back there and see if you can find that comment.

The First branded leather used Appeared TO BE CHROME tanned leather, best to only brand vegetable tanned leather .
@Dahna_
@Dahna_ Жыл бұрын
the "thin" leather didn't take not because it was thin it was because it was chrome tanned. you can only brand that way on vegetable tanned leather. you can wet stamp or heat stamp vegetan no matter the thickness.

Thanks for the video! How long does it take to heat up and be ready for use?
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
Mine takes about 15 to 20 minutes to heat up but I have to check it on a test piece to make sure it’s ready before I brand my work.

Is it normal for the wiring inside the tube to smoke and turn colors? the one I have seems like it's melting the wire inside the tube so I haven't been able to let it heat up all the way...wonder if it's broken..

@@staleyexplores I’m glad you liked it and I appreciate your comment. I do the wires in the tube get hot but am more confident that the company will give you the best answer. As I mentioned in the video the tube gets as hot as the stamp on the end.

How many watts is your Soldering Iron?
@wb_finewoodworking

I don’t know how many watts are in the branding iron. It might say somewhere on the Gearheart Industry website. As for the soldering iron I showed I no longer have one of those. That was jus a photograph of one.

Try wetting the wood first with a paper towel, should come out cleaner
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. I did, as explained in the directions, try wetting the surface but didn’t get better results. Perhaps your method of wetting the surface with a towel. I’ll give that a try. I’ve also read that a light sanding after branding the wood will help. That’s something else I need to try.
