Kevin Cronin's girlfriends have provided inspiration for several REO hits - he says this one is based on an amalgamation of these relationships, but the song has a deeper meaning. "Really, what the song is about was about my inability to have the courage to express myself," he said in a Songfacts interview. "I was brought up in an Irish-Catholic family, and you were taught to always keep a bright face, always act like everything was OK, even if maybe everything on the inside wasn't so OK. So that's something I've struggled with, and over the years have gotten better at. At that time, the only way I knew to express those feelings was to write songs about them. I've learned over the years that it works better to talk to people! You can actually become closer to other human beings when you are vulnerable and express yourself and are free to tell the truth and to be honest and to be up front with your feelings. It does work. Back in those days, the best that I could do was write a song about it. Source: Songfacts

I have a love/hate relationship with this song. As a young teen, I loved this song when it came out, and for the next 20 years or so I loved it. Then... Well, for my ex-wife and myself, it was 'our song.' I'm sure everyone can guess what happened so I won't bore anyone, though their song 'Take it on the Run' does a great job of explaining my feelings towards the end, lol. Needless to say, this song has some... "less than happy context" for me now. HOWEVER... If I'm in the right mood, I will still belt this song out with the best of them. One of the better love songs of all time, and one of the very best from the '80s. Thanks to both of you for checking this out!! Hope you get around to 'Take it on the Run', 'Keep on Loving You', and 'Time for me to Fly.' Take care!

REO Speedwagon - Can't Fight This Feeling.. Love this. Love REO. I found my "Dream Girl" and she would play this song. What i didn't realize at the time was that the dream was a Nightmare. That's when I started playing REO "Time For Me To Fly". She was the captain of our dart team and I was the anchor so I am talking about the songs on the jukebox. Would you believe she tried to move her new boyfriend in? I forgot I also played Played .. "Take It On The run"

Really love REO! They have a lot of great songs. "Ridin' the Storm Out", "Keep Pushin'", "Roll With the Changes", "Time for Me to Fly", "Take It on the Run", "In My Dreams", "Don't Let Him Go", "That Ain't Love", "Here with Me". I don't usually remember the names of albums, but their 7th album released in 1978 is one I always remember for it's wacky title: You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish. The cover art is a large fish with a tuning fork stuck in it's open mouth. Apparently the band wanted a title that would match the "out of the box" and stylistically diverse songs on the album.

So, I read an interview once with the lead singer Kevin Cronin, where he said, "it's all about various relationships of mine where I felt unable to express myself. I had the fear of change and the need to overcome it when a situation became too painful." Even though it's obvious that he addresses a female in the song, it could mean many different things. Absolutely check out more from REO Speedwagon. They're amazing! Thanks for the reaction!

I saw this REO in Greensboro NC in late 1984, my senior year of high school with my then girlfriend; this was our song! It was the "Wheels Are Touring" Tour, the name of the album this song came from - the coliseum was sold out & Survivor was the opening act. Both bands literally spent 3.5 hours blowing the doors off the place!

@MarkMay-cr6bv7 ай бұрын
A different style because it was made by a solid, hard-rocking midwestern American band -- not the sickeningly sweet pop band it became beginning with Hi Infidelity and moving forward. Still a very talented group -- and I'm sure I'm in the minority, because they got a lot more radio play and became a lot more popular with this album -- but I couldn't stomach them any longer after this one.

Always admired Kevin Cronin's voice. He may not have the depth and resonance of Steve Perry, but his pitch is right on and his articulation is second to none. You can hear and understand every word so clearly, and his lyrics always at least made sense in a poetic way. They were a really good set of musicians, too, and their first big hit, Roll With the Changes, is killer.

My favorite band of all time. Seen them live over 20 times. One time back in the early 80's after the release of HI Fidelity. I got to see them 3 times within seven days. First in Johnson City TN. 2 nights later in Knoxville TN. 3 nights later in Chattanooga TN. Believe it or not some of their best songs were never hits. Met a Bartender who said she loved them. I asked to have you ever listened to songs that never made the radio. She said no. That weekend she was taking a trip out of town so I burned her a CD of songs that unless you were a diehard fan you had never herd. When she returned from her trip I asked Well what you thought of REO. Her reply was you might have to make me another one soon because I am wearing this one out. Most underrated band in my option ever.
