One of the more professional feather clipping videos I've seen. Generally, its only necessary to clip a few of the primary feathers. Birds love attention. If they don't get it they will be miserable....clipped feathers or not. Many a bird is lost forever...do to escapes. They won't last long in the wild...as they make easy prey for hawks, owls, falcons, etc. Something to consider... Being a responsible and caring pet owner is paramount. People will always bicker back and forth as to whether it is right or wrong to clip feathers. That's what humans do....

I can understand that Neil because I know the two time's that I did clip his wing's when he was younger he seemed sad. I really believe that he understand the rules of the house pretty much. I am just absolutely Amazed at how intelligent he is. He puts sentences together at time's that floor me. My boyfriend bought me a camera yesterday so I can check on him anytime. I never get tired of looking at him. To me he is the most Beautiful, Smartest Everything in the World! I know we all feel that way. ❤ I have rescued animals my whole life. Dragging dog's and cat's you name it home. But I always took in the sick and old or ugly or motherless that no one wanted. I have sat up SO many hour's in my life nursing animal's back to health or holding them and crying while they died letting them know they were Loved and not forgotten. When I was young I'd find tiny pink baby birds in puddles of water and try to save them. It never worked. I did save one bird that I let go because he had his feathers and was almost old enough to leave the nest. He just needed a couple more weeks and then he was ready to go free. Larry, he is just the happiest little guy. He stays so close to my feet if not on them. I hope Neil that I get as many year's and more too with Larry as you do with your baby. And I hope you get many many many more year's with her. I'd like to keep in touch if you'd like? I'd sure like some pointers. I'm totally new at this and I have been very lucky that Larry has been very healthy and I want to keep him that way. I'm terrified of doing something wrong or not knowing how to do something. If you want to keep in touch and maybe help me on this journey a little (I'd so appreciate it!) I'll give you my FB or email which I don't really use much. Just let me know. Sorry this is SO long it's just exciting to get info to help with Larry. Thank you and stay safe during this craziness. Denise

I agree that this was the better produced most straight forward and simply explained wing trim video of the several I checked out. I now feel confident to trim my little budgies myself. I've let my birds fly about bcuz I think it's unfair to have birds not fly but I am about to move and I think they will be more safe if I have a little more control. Also they've retreated to the ceiling fan blades intentionally staying away from us and only hanging out with each other. I will use this opportunity to play with them, reassure them of their safety with me and hopefully teach them a trick or two. When their wings grow back maybe they won't be so aloof.

My opinion with clipping is very mixed because I clipped my budgie's wings not too long after i got him so that he would stop flying into things when i startled him, he still is terrified of me. I had gotten him a new friend a few months after the clipping to see if his mood changed, unfortunately he is still untame. Yet, I'm not going to clip his new friend and that has shown good results with taming. His new friend has a more friendly view of me. To conclude, I personally believe clipping is more of a risky safety precaution than a form of "torture". P.S. the oldest has already grown his feathers back and it's only been less than a year.

I'm not even a bird owner, my friend, who owns 2 Cockatiels linked me the video. It even explains in the video that you're NOT clipping the bird's hands, you're literally trimming the wings. This isn't declawing a cat, this isn't circumcising a Dobermin's ears, this is literally giving it a haircut. You're not letting your bird out to fly, you're letting the creature walk around in your house exploring shit and playing with toys. You're entitled to your opinion and I respect that, but the reasons why... bruh absolute PETA soldiers.

I respect your opinion and yes it can be dangerous but I don’t agree with the “if anything not clipping wings is being abusive”. Not taking away the birds main ability and what makes it a ... BIRD is not abusive are you serious. Mine are fully flighted and never caged and they are happy as pigs in sh1t. Much happier than most bird owners I know that clip their birds wings. It affects the bird mentally, emotionally as well as physically. Don’t ever tell someone not clipping their birds wings is abusive. That’s the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard in my entire life.

@@jferguson3930 I understand why you think that my comment is very stupid, I had a lot of bias within my sloppy rant. Also, I did use the word "abusing" incorrectly; I tend to use repetition somewhat to get my point across. I shouldn't have used it in that context forgive me. The reason I feel it is necessary to clip a bird's wings is because it's much safer. Obviously, you do want your bird to feel safe and secure while making sure the environment is in no way harmful. I wouldn't want a bird to get damaged because of poor negligence. Shit happens randomly and even in supposed "protective" places. There are many pros and cons, but I just find it safer to give the bird a haircut decreasing the chance of an aerial accident to occur. Each to their own, I may actually edit my comment so I can correct that error.

Did you all know when they declaw a cat they actually cut of the first knuckle of each toe bones and all. That's dismemberment. I did not know that until I watched Jackson Galaxy. Thank goodness we never did that to our cats when I was a kid. Once we got a cat from someone cuz their new born child was severely allergic. She was a declawed 10 yr old when we got her. I grew up with a Doberman retired security dog she was docked ears and clipped tail before we got her. She hated small children bcuz when they had clipped her ears and tail as a pup, the small children the woman of the house babysat grabbed her by her ears and tail while they were still in bandages. She forever associated small children with pain. We had her a year before I grew tall enuf for her to stop hating me.

Hi Affan, thank you for your question. Your birds feathers are likely to grow back! So long as you didn't cut a blood feather, or damage any bones, your birds feathers will grown back after their next moult. Moulting time will vary between each species of bird so it may be a number of months until the feathers grow back. To ensure a good moult, it is important that your bird receives a balanced, nutritious diet. If you aren't feeding one of our complete pellet diets, we recommend supplementing the current diet with Multivet. This includes a moulting aid that will assist your bird in developing strong, healthy feathers.

I work at a bird store and I clip loads of budgie, conure, cockatiel, quaker, etc wings. We clip all of the baby birds wings because we hand train each and every one, and since we have rescue birds like macaws and African greys around the store, its just safer for them to not be able to fly all the way to a macaw on the other side of the store and get hurt. I am not saying this video is wrong in any way, but we NEVER clip our bird's secondary feathers. (We also do not leave the first few, but I have seen people leave those in for appearance purposes and that's your choice.) For us, we clip about 5 primary feathers on each side, and that prevents the birds from taking off and flapping too far away, and lets them land safely. If a bird is very determined, we will take off another one or two, but from personal experience, the amount of feathers that were clipped in this video is Extreme. My parakeets have never had clipped secondaries, and even with half grown in primaries if they had gotten outside they would not have gotten far. Honestly I would have been more worried about them running away than flying away. The choice to clip a birds wings is up to you, but just from my experience, cutting the secondary feathers is just unnecessary. Those feathers are there for gliding and landing. leave them in and just cut all or half the primaries and your bird will be out of danger of dogs/cats, fans, or flying outside.

Hi, thank you for watching and commenting on our video! If you must clip their wings we only recommend doing so, in the way that is detailed in this video. We do not recommend cutting all of the primary feathers as you are more at risk of hitting a blood feather. You also risk affecting their landing. Clipping the way described in this videos ensures that cannot get "lift" to fly to heights, but that they can still safely land when they need to. By cutting all of them you risk them having a nasty landing and possibly even breaking their keel bone.

@@vetafarm As a veterinary company, you should probably be discouraging it at least in theory. Removing a bird's ability to move and exercise normally has physical and mental health consequences. Wing-clipping being a normalised "tradition" does not mean that it is good for birds. While I understand that some birds right now are unable to be flighted due to various circumstances, going forward owners should receive education on the importance of flight and how to safely live with a flighted bird. You'll find that this is a growing trend among not just aviculturists, but avian veterinarians.

Why don't you do a video training people how to make the birds environment safe for it so that it can continue to practice it's most important natural behaviour.....flying. All birds love to fly,do you know how not being able to fly affects the bird phycologically.....of course you don't.Birds use flight as a natural defense against predators, take it away from them and they can feel vulnerable.Flying also gives a bird it's most natural form of exersize and keeps it in tip top shape with a strong immune system. Clipping doesn't help a bird in any way at all,all it does is help an owner to make the bird fit in with their ideals.....i can't believe a vet is promoting wing clipping as acceptable behaviour.....do you think the bird wants it's wings clipped so it can no longer do what is fundemental to it.......not likely, human beings make me sick.

Larry my Starling is now 10 months old. I have not clipped his wing's in 8 month's. He will fly out of his cage but he prefers to walk on the floor. He seems to be afraid of heights which we had to get him a cage that was night high and he is afraid of the dark. He LOVES music and has his own little radio that has to go on first thing in the morning. I've learned a lot about birds! I've researched a lot. Watched a lot of videos and documentaries and have read a lot. I never knew having a bird could be so many different thing's in my heart. He is so different from every other type of animal that I've had. He knows so many sentences and words it's amazing! And he uses them at the appropriate times. One day I was cleaning his cage and he was arguing with me??? I was stunned! I listen to the birds outside and I feel bad because I know how Loved and spoiled Larry is and I wish they all could feel safe and Loved. Yes it's nice for them to feel freedom but I know when birds come up to our patio Larry pays zero attention to them. He listens to his radio and says "Just give it to me!" When I pull out the Ritz crackers. He has no fear when he closes his eyes to sleep. He has no fear when he walks around the house. All he knows is Love and security. And when he snuggles up to me and says "Who Loves Larry?" And gives me a kiss with that long beak, I know he thanks me for saving him as a baby and for being his mommy because he Love's me as much as I Love him. So being out in the wild vs captivity. I know what my bird chooses. No fears.....no predators. Love.❤

What do I do, don't shout at me! I clipped both wings at the Birds armpits, and now he's pissed off, but I've made a great paper plane from them. Update: My Budgie fell asleep after I cut his wings off, in fact he's slept for 4 days, so he needed a good rest, I'll waken him tomorrow when I clean up the blood. Thanks again 🕊🕊🕊

Budgie Lovers Forever My fault for failing to be "funny" 😂 Yes he's 16, I got him from my Daughter for my 30th birthday, I am 47 in 2 months. He's never really been a social Bird at all, and can be quite a temperamental Boy at times. I had no idea about their lifespan...and presumed it was similar to a Parrot such as a McCaw, and was a little shocked to learn how old he is. He's never had a mate or another bird near him, so I have no idea about his long life. I'll miss him when he goes, hopefully he sticks around for a while yet 👍🏻

@Budgie Lovers Forever Mine too>. Slept for four days. Then stopped breathing. Maybe I also cut the breathing feathers. Now I am waiting for them to grow again.

My little female budgie was clipped when I got her. She was a sweetheart but she never learned to fly free. I will never clip a birds wings again as I consider it barbaric. If you want a bird then please birdproof your house and take the time to bond with it.

lt's definitely your decision, not the bird's for sure...lol. Why not just cut the dog's feet off so they won't escape from the house too or remove their fangs so they don't chew furniture. If you can't accommodate what comes naturally with animal, don't get a pet. Learn to train and bird-proof your house. Vets should not be promoting this as a very very last resort. I definitely will not be going this vet clinic if so.

Youre comparing cutting a dogs legs of to slightly modifing a bird's flight. Just listen to yourself 😂

Hi Rahul, thank you for watching our video and for your feedback. The choice of whether or not to clip a birds wings is up to the owner of the bird, and we do not encourage or discourage wing clipping. If an owner decides to clip their birds wings, it is important to us that it is done correctly to prevent harm or injury to the bird. That is why we created this video! :)

And that's why I don't have any pet 🐦 or 🐈 or 🐕 or 🐍 or 🐢 or 🐇or 🐠 or 🐵 or 🐿️ or 🐜 or 🕷️ or 🐎 or 🐐 or 🐄🐂 or 🐊 or 🦊 or 🐨 etc......................... Kinda scary to abuse them feel like violation of animals no matter what you want to make yourself believe, if you love them it's not good idea to keep them trap. If you have a piece of land with proper amenities and they aren't trapped then maybe it's good.... I kinda feel you will understand what I meant to say no disrespect.... At end it's your choice. Peace 🕊️ God knows best
