Most importantly: this film is TIGHT. When Poirot started his final accusation of the murderer, it felt like the ending arrived earlier than expected, which is a relief in a time where almost everything wears out its welcome stretching to two or three hours.

This exactly. Just before I watched this film, I rewatched Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile where it felt like way more people died and Hercule's role looking into the deaths was very drawn out. A Haunting though just moves straight through them. Directly to the point. And the action/ horror combo does a good 1-2 combo to keep the good detective unbalanced through the film.

@@cianbroderick7733 I mean, you can certainly make the argument that loads of movies these days are made with profits in mind *first*. Obviously a movie needs to make a profit for the cast, crew, directors, writers, etc to get paid for their work, but when profits are prioritized proper storytelling, filmmaking craft, etc, all falls to the wayside, resulting in lackluster, repetitive, non-stimulating junk. Movies made where entertaining the audience is the priority, on the other hand, are usually driven by passion for storytelling, filmmaking, etc, and do those crafts justice by producing something that's actually worth enjoying. (I enjoy a good "crappy" profit-driven movie from time to time myself, but it's exhausting when that's almost all you see, lol.)

I saw an advance screening of this and I think it's the best of all 3. the story is a good mix of supernatural and whodunnit, and I like the cast. Michelle Yeoh and Tina Fey are the highlights. My audience laughed and gasped at all the jump scares. The cinematography is very atmospheric and the sets / locations are very beautiful. I saw this tonight (09/14) and this is the type of spooky movie I love. I've never been a fan of straight up horror, but if you have a good mystery story and set it in a creepy setting and I'm there for it I actually quite appreciated the camera and lighting, as they could make the same set feel open in one scene and claustrophobic in the next. I also, perhaps unlike Chris because of my own tastes, actually liked the "horror" aspects and how they were presented. I have not read the books (although I should), but I did figure out one aspect of the story pretty early on, and thought those horror aspects represented pretty well how that aspect would play out. That may play more into my appreciation of mystery over horror aspects, hence our different perspective.

Branagh's three Poirot movies are all crafted so well. Each is in a fantastic setting with a really strong specific vibe. A Haunting Venice does a great job as two kinds of thriller: murder mystery and haunted house story. I can see watching this every fall. Actually, each movie has nicely captured a season to revisit the movie: Murder on the Orient Express in winter, Death on the Nile in summer, and A Haunting in Venice in the fall. Saw it this evening. Loved Branagh's Orient Express, really liked his Death on the Nile, & loved this adaptation of Hallowe'en Party. End left me shattered & in tears. Major influences are Don't Look Now (Nicolas Roeg, 1973, which this film lifted a great deal from), & Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick, 1999; its costuming & production design influence this film). The scary jump shots seem fake until Branagh has you by the throat, at which point they're straight out of an LSD hallucination. Best thing about this film: the casting, which could not be bettered. Yeoh convinced me the ghosts were real.

After that movie came out, there is an interview where she starts crying because she feels like the directors had given her a chance to finally show audiences that she was capable of a wider range of acting/emotions/genres outside of her typical roles. And the haunting on Venice movie is def not a genre she is known for/has typically been cast in, which does speak to Hollywood's growing recognition of her diverse acting talent.

I hadn't heard til this review either. The marketing has been quiet compared to the last two films despite it looking like it has a great atmosphere being near Halloween. Actually I would find it really cool if some younger people go based on seeing a trailer and end up enjoying it. Then again like Chris says it gives off Blum house vibes and those audiences are looking for something very specific that this movie isn't. I've seen marketing backfire before so we will have to see how things go but I've seen way more egregious trailers where the audience is truly tricked into seeing a movie. I remember the Village, people were dragging it bad because they thought it was a creature horror movie when it's a suspense drama really.

I'm kind of confused. I just recently read Hallowe'en Party and there was nothing in here that sounds like the book that I read. There is no seance in that story. A girl is killed at a Hallowe'en Party after she'd stated that she had seen a crime, and one guest at the party is friends with Poirot who begins to investigate and finds out that the girl is a notorious liar. So everyone just assumes that a mentally unstable person randomly broke into the house and killed her for no reason. I won't spoil the ending, but there's no haunting, no Venice, no seance. I don't understand why everyone's saying that this movie was an adaptation of Hallowe'en Party when the book is a completely different story

How much of the movie is true to the source material and how much does it deviate from it? When I first saw the trailer, I had to Google it (i’m familiar with all the Poirot titles and I didn’t recognize this one). When I read that it’s based on Hallowe’en Party, my first thought was “the way this is marketed, there’s no way it’s based on that” as I’ve read the book as well as seen the television adoption with David Suchet. So I’m just wondering if it’s worth seeing, or if I’ll hate it because it’s “too different” from Hallowe’en Party?

It's entirely different. It only has a few homages to the original with some character names and roles. On the plus side, it stands alone as it's own mystery, on the other... it's literally not really based on a Christie novel, let alone a Poirot! I will say there was one thing it did keep from the book that made it easy for me to guess one specific thing. If you go in not expecting a faithful adaptation at all, I think it's enjoyable. But it's definitely the most liberal and at times almost blasphemous Branagh Poirot's yet. There was one moment where I gasped because I think series fans will be really upset by one change. I did enjoy it, but it's barely a Christie, imo. I genuinely wonder if it was a general horror spec script that was adapted to fit, or simply otherwise they pulled from Christie's most famous tropes/twists and threw them in a blender to create a brand new plot (so in that sense, it feels like an homage).

Question: I’ve always loved murder mysteries and Agatha Christie in particular but tbh I was massively disappointed with Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express and as such didn’t bother with Death on the Nile. Even so, I’ve had a morbid curiosity about A Haunting in Venice. Do you think I’d feel different about this one?

I thought it was a beautifully crafted film and the atmosphere was fantastic. I haven’t read Halloween Party so I don’t know if this would be the case for that, but I had guessed who done it fairly early in. It didn’t keep me from enjoying the ride of this movie, but it was a much different experience that I had with the Death in the Nile I had seen as a child. Venice is of course beautiful and a brilliant setting that has never truly been fully utilized in any movie (understandably) but the set of the palazzo was immersive, creepy and perfectly believably. I like Branagh and agree he is great as Poirot, and while Tina Fey did well, I cannot really see her as anything other than Liz Lemmon or herself. That took me out of the film the most, though that may not be her fault. This movie has issues and is not a perfect film, but the film craft and setting are enough for me to want to own it and see it again. It does, however and like all films set in Venice, makes me long for the film I have never seen, the one that truly does justice to the ghosts of Venice.

In this movie’s defense, I’m not exactly an older audience and having not known about its existence until I heard the title somewhere in the last month, I instantly knew it was a Perrault movie. I was probably able to make that connection because I’ve seen the other two movies and have grown accustomed to how they’re titled. It’s always “Event In/On Location”.

I love that who done it's are making a return. sometimes they are really good. I think the key for most of them is that who ever writes them needs to be at least as intelligent as the detective they are writing. otherwise you have some fancy showmanship of them trying to prove how smart they are, while the rest of us can see they had a much simpler option. knives out does this really well, both of them do in their own ways. the second one was meant to be more simple but hey, that's just a story choice that some didnt get along with. idk who done it's are difficult, horror is also difficult. I look forward to seeing how this movie plays out.

@@takoshihitsamaru4675 Yeah, the second unit did some pick-up shots, but the establishing shots are mostly CGI, and even some of them used unnecessary green screen. The thing is, they could have gotten away with half of what they did. Put the money into the nice establishing shots and leave it at that; we know where they are. In any film, I always believe if you cannot make it look real/good, don't touch it, or one or two scenes can distract so badly that they hurt the film.

This was a pretty good movie, going in I was pretty hesitant because I personally was not a fan of the previous 2 Hercule Poirot movies, mainly for the same reason as to why I didn’t enjoy Knives Out, which is that for me I’ve never really been a fan of murder mysteries, I don’t know what it is about them but I’ve just never really enjoyed them honestly, and so I didn’t really have much interest in this movie, but I actually had a fairly good time with it, Kenneth Branagh is good as Hercule Poirot, which did surprise me because one of my criticisms of the first 2 movies was that I always felt like Kenneth Branagh’s performance was kinda cartoony, like he was purposely trying to be over the top to create more of an old timey feel or something, but here he kinda dials it back a little bit which I did appreciate, there was also this little boy who I thought was pretty charming and had some solid dialogue throughout the movie, I think the biggest positive of this movie is the setting, Halloween is my favorite holiday and so having it set around that season along with having elements of horror interwoven into this movie made it feel a lot more unique and more appealing to me than the others, as far as negatives go I would say that there weren’t really any other characters that I cared about, it felt like most of them were there just to be suspects and that’s it, and I think the movie suffers from the 2 main things that makes me not really like the murder mystery genre, one is that like I said I feel like pretty much all of them are always trying to replicate the cheesy, old timey feel of the 1970’s or something, resulting in them pretty much always feeling intentionally corny, that’s one of the reasons I loved The Hateful Eight, unlike most murder mystery movies it felt modern, the other thing these movies suffer from is that in order to make their stories it always results in a very convoluted story that’s always delivered in the big form of an exposition dump at the end, and I personally am not the super analytical type and so that’s a big reason as to why these movies pretty much always lose me, and lastly I wasn’t a fan of the actual séance scene, mainly due to Michelle Yeoh, her acting during that scene became way too over the top, to the point where I quite frankly thought it was kinda embarrassing honestly, but I surprisingly thought this movie was pretty good, I wouldn’t say it’s a movie I’d go out of my way to see again but for being the movie I chose on a weekend where I didn’t really care about any of the movies coming out I had a decent time with it, the acting is good, I really liked the setting and for a genre that I had pretty much given up hope for liking it delivered a pretty entertaining time. 6/10
