Since they’re splitting up, John and Jill are desperate to sell their four-bedroom, 1970s terrace home in Weybridge…But after 18 months, over one hundred viewings, and a sharp drop in the asking price, they haven’t had a single offer. The garden home is nestled on a quiet cul-de-sac in one of Southeast England’s wealthiest areas…But with its stale interior and clutter, the home’s potential is completely lost on buyers.
Enter real estate experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They promise to breathe new life into the stagnant listing. And while John’s investigation of the estate agent leads him back to the homeowners, Sofie and the team get busy creating a comely and cohesive design that’s guaranteed to showcase the home’s strengths. Will this tired property finally stand out from the crowd?

What's the purpose of that? You're not buying their stuff and if you want different colours, you can paint the walls yourself once you move in; you're buying the space, the light, the number of bedrooms & bathrooms, the garden, the windows and doors, the roof, the electric system and the piping, the area, the view... If the house has no problems to fix and has everything you need and want, the rest shouldn't matter.

@@mermaidmoon2254 - Yet, it does. We follow the path of least resistance. Think of it this way, your house is competing with 20 other houses. You want a buyer to feel a special attachment to your home. Through our primary senses we do this. Eyesight - cleanliness and basic style is easier on the eyes. Smell - cleanliness and perhaps fresh baked bread or cookies to remind you of a cozy warm home. A house that makes one feel a certain way will stand out as In or Out on a list of many homes. So, it shouldn’t matter if the house is a disaster yet functions well, but it does.

@@CowboyBike06 I'm sorry, but NO. I've moved twice, and in both my last two places the things I cared about were the one I listed in the comment before. Everything else is fixable and doesn't bother me one bit. What makes the house you're gonna choose, is the things that are not fixable/easily changeable.

@@CowboyBike06 You have to know your market I guess. Where I live a house definitely isn't competing against 20 others, rather it's more like 20 buyers competing for one house. An 'unsellable' house is one where the sellers refuse to accept the market price, period. Unless it's a literal meth den it's sellable. And even a meth den is sellable at the right price.

I am the rare buyer who can see past the clutter and imagine the potential. I can focus on size of room, placement of windows and imagine my own furniture placement. I can focus on condition of doors and trim and ask myself will I need to paint or patch anything? However, it would be difficult for me to see past the dirt. A home in a neglected state sets off all the alarms in my head. If they neglect dusting and vacuuming, they are most likely neglecting maintenance and repairs. My only thought while watching this, is that I'm sure the agent already had these same conversations with the sellers.....when listing, after 20 showings, after 50 showings, etc. They know why this house wasn't selling. But it makes for a good TV show. LOL! Anyone else notice that the owner's (master) bdrm was not featured in this show? Odd!

I think what a lot of sellers don't understand is that once you put your house on the market it's not really yours anymore. It has to appeal to others, not to the homeowners. When we sold our house it was spotless and uncluttered. I could be ready for a showing within 30 minutes of a call from a Realtor (I had to turn on all of the lights, pull up the shades, put the dog's water and food bowl in the garage, etc., etc.) The house sold in 48 hours for the full asking price. I'd staged the dining room and kitchen tables with nice place settings and made sure the only things on the bathroom counters were a few decorations. Ditto the kitchen counters and island. The house looked calm and bright and airy.

They either want to show off things that mean nothing to a potential buyer as if they are the holy grail, or they sit in around looking bored which tells me they have no interest in their home. The house we bought was pretty dirty even though it looked okay on the surface. It took 6 hours just to scrub the front hallway, woodwork and door. I wouldn't even use the bathroom before cleaning it. I don't know how anyone can live the way the sellers of our house did. There were holes in the walls, half finished paint, tired looking cabinets, among other things. We've painted the cabinets (professionally), put on new hardware, painted the interior a soft blue and part of the outside white (we will do more as we get the money). There were bushes that looked like they hadn't been trimmed in 5+ years. We put new hinges and doorknobs on the doors. It looks like a new home inside. It's been a challenge, but very satisfying to turn a tired looking, dirty 12 year old house into a beautiful one.

I found the meeting with the two agents bizarre; they are competing against each other, not working together to sell that house. The one seemingly didn't participate at all or they just didn't use his input. How hard would you work for a commission if you had direct competition from one, two or three others trying to do so? I guess I'm used to the US where seller's agents have an exclusive in most cases. Any buyers' agent can bring a buyer and get half the commission here while the listing agent gets the other half.
