Great tips. I'm a brown belt judoka who is finally also taking up jiu jitsu. I think leaving my ego at the door has been the biggest thing, that combined with having a beginners mindset. Seriously, trying to clear my mind of all judo before stepping onto the mat has helped immensely. It is so much more enjoyable that way. There is so much to learn if you are open to it.

I just started BJJ a month ago. Being a new white belt is special... Your like the baby of the family, everyone encourages you and watches out for you. It's something you only get to be once.

I’m a white belt jiu jitsu been doing it 7 months. I’m going to start judo now that I’m a white belt in Bjj. Going to cross train to improve it.

Really great hearing from someone who has followed a similar martial journey to me- started in karate, moved to Filipino martial arts after black belt in that, now just got brown in judo and starting to think about BJJ. Absolutely agree that it’s so important to maintain a white belt attitude and leave ego off the matt

Lately, I went back to judo as an adult and I have never been disposed to turtle unless I got no choice. Only then, it struck me how uncommon it was in randori. To the point that I got the comment: "On the ground, you do not move like a judoka". It makes me feel kind of sad to hear that: as a kid in France I was taught to fight off my back in judo and I grew up with Isao Okano's book on grappling.

@@KamaJiuJitsu I am really not (that) old. I honestly do not know if it was the country, the instructor or whatever. I also remember being taught a fair share of sweeps at external camps. But, even if I have been watching judo competition, I had not fully realised that "normal" ne waza training was 80% turtle until I started over somewhere else. There, I feel like an alien sometimes for having strong fundamentals when on my back.

Can’t pin someone after a wazari if they’re belly down or in turtle.

@@KamaJiuJitsu I certainly get the logic from a competition perspective! After all, if all you have to do is stubbornly defend on all four for a few seconds when you hit the floor, then you save a lot of time to train throws. Personally, I really dislike the idea of being passive and since I just train casually, I prefer having fun in ne waza randori. :)

This video makes it seem like they're different arts. They're not. The main difference is IBJJF vs IJF competition ruleset.
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 5 жыл бұрын
You are correct on the “rule set.” However, adhering to the rule set in tournaments often breeds adherence to the rule set in training. Training to the rule set creates different actions and reactions to different stimuli. Hence, different arts, even if the two came out of the same art in the first place.

The rule changes starting in the early 70's up until today are the worse things to ever happen to judo.no marketing is also killing us.I take a private with my Sensei who just turned 80 last Friday for the 7 years.He told me my first private i'm now going to teach you real judo like i learned it before the rules.Let me tell you it's nothing like tournament judo,but like it was taught in the 50's and 60's.Judo isn't governed in the best interest of the player anymore.BJJ is doing the best job of any marital art for the people that actually do it.Even traditional juijitsu which i also train in are dropping the ball.I'm fortunate to leave in the NYC area so i have different places and people to train with.

@@KamaJiuJitsu I think know exactly what you've meant with your explanation. The same issue that's been plaguing Kano Ju-Jitsu schools after WW 2 where they're overly IJF-competition-focused and they study only 50% of the art is the same issue spreading into other Ju-Jitsu schools that are becoming IBJJF-obsessed. The self-defense must not be pushed aside.

Wrestling combine way better with jiu jitsu(sport today judo is very distinct to that judo used to be) especially for a guy like no gi(Luta livre or other no gi no bjj grappling competitions) or MMA wrestling is the only way

I don't know but I seen Judoka cross training in BJJ has been throwing BJJers like rag doll in BJJ competition. To say if judo is not useful perhaps you didn't master the art properly.

Judo like bjj is different anywhere you go. Judo in Japan is a lot different than somewhere lets say france or Russia. My teacher stays true to things like the self defense side of things but he also has a BJJ purple belt

Wrestling is not inherently a better combination. It may be for you and may not be for another. Shooting takedowns require tremendous energy and if they fail(and often do with people with little wrestling experience) that’s a lot of wasted energy. Judo is all about off balancing before you throw/trip/sweep/takedown, so for many people it’s a better combo, plus the fact that judo also uses a gi and there are a plethora of gi related skills in both that help each other

This guy can get a dominant position everytime without fail from any position. What hole is there, then?

Great point. Then why are there no judokas dominating the fighter ranks? Heck, forget “dominating,” how about more than one or two?

Every art has pieces of the puzzle. Some (tribes) arts have damage and mangled the pieces, others strive to keep their pieces in good shape. No art is perfect... because there are no perfect artists. humility and ego are a doorway. if ego is too big... you can't go inside to learn. in the words of the martal arts philosopher Bruce Lee... “Research your own experience. Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is essentially your own.” and to that i add... avoid holding contempt for other arts or styles. even aikido has something to share... while it lacks a great many things, a lot of mma gyms tend to infect people with hate.

@isalehyan 5 жыл бұрын
First, I didn’t say I can get a dominant position every time without fail. But, on most BJJ people, most of the time, yes. Second, there was a hole in my ground game, because decent BJJ guys could beat me in the ground. So both can have holes and that’s why both work well together.
